Matt For a movie or possibly TV series or mini-series

Logen Ninefingers: Garret Dillahunt
Bayaz: Anthony Hopkins
Jezal: Jamie Campbell Bower
Glokta: Sharlto Copley
Ferro: Danai Gurira
Ardee: Alexa Davalos
West: Jim Sturgess

Thoughts and ideas?

Thaddeus White Been a while since I read the trilogy.

I think Jeremy Irons could be good as Glokta.

Hopkins as Bayaz is a great choice.

Matt Jeremy Irons from 25 years ago would have been great. Glokta is still a relatively young man although his experiences have aged him greatly.

John Ludlow I think Joaquin Phoenix would be a good Glokta if we think Jeremy Irons is too old (though I don't think he's that old, to be honest).

How about Jamie Bamber as West?

Tahmoh Penikett as Logen - in BSG he definitely had that slightly crazy look at times.

message 5: by Kim (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kim If Jada Pinkett Smith were taller I'd say she would carry the attitude of Ferro perfectly.

Alexa Devalos as Ardee is a good choice. I also like your choice for Glokta.

Logan: Marton Csokas
Dogman: Tom Wlaschiha
Jezal: Alex Pettyfer
West: Karl Urban
Sult: Ben Kingsley
Bayaz: James Cosmo

message 6: by Ryan (last edited Feb 08, 2013 08:00PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ryan Ailts On "Last Argument" right now, but here's my cast:

Glotka: Benedict Cumberbatch (originally Geoffrey Rush channeling his Pirates character until I realized he was much, much younger)
Jezal: Chris Pine (maybe Tom Hardy)
Logen: Ray Stevenson
Ferro: Zoe Saldana
Bayaz: Sean Connery/Michael Caine/Rutger Hauer

West: Eric Bana
Dogman: Jason Statham
Threetrees: James Cosmo
Black Dow: Vinnie Jones
Quai: Steven Yeun

Ardee: Scarlet Johannson
Sult: Cirian Hinds
Marshall Burr: Brian Blessed
Conan Stevens: Practical Frost
Vissbruck: Bill Nighy

Just a few I had in my head while reading.

Giuseppe Dazzi First character to die -> Sean Bean

Chris ^ Ray Stevenson is a fantastic choice for Logen.

Space Preacher Bayaz - Jeff Bridges from Iron Man
Glokta - Michael Emerson (Ben Linus from Lost)

My original choice for Logen just makes me sad now, but I always thought Andy Whitfield from the first season of Spartacus would have been excellent.

Taylor Moore I've always thought that Jerome Flynn who play's Bronn on game of thrones would be a good choice for logen.. If you look at the picture of ninefingers by David jennison, Flynn looks somewhat like logen. I thought it would be an interesting choice.

Some really excellent casting choices here. I'm half way through the third book of the trilogy now. I could maybe see Rosario Dawson as Ferro. It's funny that the last comment mentions Jerome Flynn. He's the one actor who I really associate with a particular character and picture in my head while I'm reading, but for me he's Black Dow, not Logen. For Logen I maybe see Joe Manganiello. A bit of a pretty boy compared to the way Logen is described in the books, but hey, it's Hollywood. I can easily envision Manganiello berserkering it up real good for Logen's "Bloody Nine" sequences.

Edward I can't imagine anyone better than Ray Stevenson for Logen, and Jeff Bridges for Bayaz, those are GREAT choices guys. And yeah, Rosario Dawson would be great for Ferro, and yeah, Eric Bana would be a great West.

message 13: by Anamaria (new)

Anamaria Acristini I've noticed Cosca is missing. So, when all is said and done, considering he is a constant appearance in all Abercrombie's books (except The Heroes), my vote goes to Geoffrey Rush.

Thomas Olsen I keep imagining the guy who plays Varys in Game of Thrones as Bayaz.

Melody Mickey Rourke for Logen Ninefingers.

Mircea Florea I think Sean Connery would make a great Bayaz.

"My fucking old arse it wasn’t, hissed Bayaz through
gritted teeth" - I rest my case.

Mircea Florea Yulwei - Morgan Freeman
Ferro - The katana woman from Walking Dead
Ardee - Salma Hayek

message 18: by Tony (new)

Tony Holness For Logan I think Rory McCann the hound from game of thrones is perfect

For Practical Frost Reuben de Jong Theokoles
from Spartacus massive albino what more do you want

For Dogman Travis Fimmel Ragnar from Vikings

Crummock I Phial Brian blessed or Tom Baker thinking of him as captain rum in Blackadder

Bayaz a few ideas Ray Winstone, Brian Cox, Julian Glover

What do you guys think

Practically Perfect. My Changes and Additions

Sand Dan Glokta: Sharlto Copley

Logen Ninefingers: Ray Stevenson
Bayaz: Larry David or Malcom McDowell

Collem West: Eric Bana
Ferro Maljinn: Vicky Jeudy(Orange is the New Black)

King Bethod: Brian Cox

Rudd Threetrees: Liam Neeson
The Dogman: Kevin McKidd(dat HBO Rome Reunion)

Tul Thunderhead: Dolph Lundgren
Harding Grimm: Jerome Flynn

Caul Shivers: Adam Driver(Girls)

Ardee West: Aubrey Plaza
Arch Lector Sult: Patrick Stewart
Marshall Burr: Ron Donachie
Practical Frost: Joe Gatt
Practical Severad: Russel Brand
Brother Longfoot: Dev Patel
Salem Rewes Pike: Doug Jones

The Feared: Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson

message 20: by Greg (new) - rated it 5 stars

Greg Riggs I like the list Joe. Although I do think Vinnie Jones is the perfect Black Dow.

If Bana is not available, I would recommend Michael Fastbender for Collem West. He would make a great Furious.

I especially like Adam Driver as a young Caul Shivers.

Ray Stevenson can play Cosca but not The Bloody Nine. He has the perfect winning smile for Cosca. Micky Rourke is ugly and menacing enough to be Logen.

message 21: by Gus (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gus Price I like what everyone has so far except no one has Collem West right at all!

Iain Glen from Game of Thrones is the perfect West in my opinion. He is supposed to be slightly older with a reseeding hairline everyone here picked a strapping young man like Eric Bana ( I dont see that one)

I do like Zoe Saldana as Ferro even though she's probably too hot for that role but it would be fun to watch.

This one might be crazy but check this out....Bruce Willis as Bayaz. Yeah I know its a little much but he supposed to look like a large blacksmith and DEF has his bad ass moments.

message 22: by John (new) - rated it 5 stars

John Hendry Fantastic series of books. All his books have been great so far. Anyway, as to the potential cast.

Logen Ninefingers - Damian Lewis (I think he could pull off both the calm and maniacal sides of the character).

Caul Shivers (post run in with Monza Murcatto) - Steve Buscemi.

Glokta - Bill Murray

Arch Lector Sult: Patrick Stewart (not my idea but cannot argue with it).

Bayaz - Billy Connolly

Collem West - Sean Bean (he has to be in it).

Some great casting suggested in this thread.

message 23: by Jonathan (last edited Feb 20, 2015 09:40AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jonathan Roberts Jeff Bridges - Bayaz

Mackenzie Crook - Dogman

Stephen Dillane - General Kroy

Danny DeVito - Brother Longfoot

Mark Addy - Crummock-i-Phail

Peter O'Toole circa 1960 - Jezal (anachronistic, but I think he'd be perfect!)

Bastien Couture-boisvert Daniel Day Lewis has always been my Glokta

message 25: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Huxley Caul Shivers - Ryan Hurst!!!

Karen Eric Bana as Logen ninefingers he was excellent as Mark "Chopper" Read. He would be great as The Bloody Nine.

Robert Carlyle as Glokta

Liam Neeson as Rudd Threetrees

Conan Stevens as Tul Thunderhead

Tekener Klaus Kinski would make the perfect Glokta; once somebody resurrected him.

Tamara Philip Travis Fimmel would be a great Logen Ninefingers. he can do both Barbaric and likeable but still scary underneath. aka watch him in Vikings
or the guy who acts as Thor (Chris Hemsworth)

Lupita Nyongo for Ferro

Someone said Bruce Willis as Bayaz and I could see it. ornery and down to earth but also a complete douchecanoe.

tom hardy for west

tom hiddleston for glokta because he has that range to be a loveable rogue and yet ruthless.

Chris Pine or Liam Hemsworth could go for Jezal

Robert Blair I can't see past Hugh Jackman as Logen Ninefingers. Jackman has the acting pedigree and the CV for action roles. For me, if you're going to get bloody, get the bloke who plays the Wolverine.
Ferro: Lupita Nyongo'o (No brainer)
Glokta: Stephen Moyer
Jezal: Ryan Kwanten (was and still is the face of Jezal in my mind)
Byaz: Rob Reiner (think about it "one minute grandfatherly good nature, the next who knows?"
Cosca: Geoffrey Rush is the inspired choice.
*Mercato: Eva Green

Robert Lamb Robert wrote: "I can't see past Hugh Jackman as Logen Ninefingers. Jackman has the acting pedigree and the CV for action roles. For me, if you're going to get bloody, get the bloke who plays the Wolverine.

Totally agree with Jackman for Logen. Him or Viggo Mortensen maybe. Someone with the capacity to properly portray gruesome action but also be able to delve in to more of Logens subtleties. Anyone arguing about handsomeness, forget that, this is a movie. Scarred up and henched out either one would look badass for Ninefingers.

For Glokta I'm really liking Leonardo Di'Caprio. I just think he's got the acting chops to properly commit to the role, while introducing a bit of Glokta's dark humour in there as well re. his role in Django. I've noticed Sharlto Copely put around by a few people and I just can't see that South African accent working, haha, though it would be good to see him do something.

I like Anthony Hopkins for Bayaz, he can be as friendly as you like but turn the menace up to 11.

I saw on another board someone suggest Whoopie Goldberg for Yulwei and even though I'm sure it was supposed to be a joke I actually really liked the idea. I wouldn't want to see Morgan Freeman in this role, him dancing around surrounded by swords fighting Tolomei? Just no.

Some other thoughts:

Carlot dan Eider: Anne Hathaway - totally beautiful enough, could easily play the seductress and her chemistry with Leo would be amazing I think.

Black Dow: Call me crazy but I could see James McAvoy playing the shit out of Dow. I always pictured him as smaller than the other northmen, just way meaner.

Dogman: My first thought is Robert Carlyle, though he might be a bit old now. The guy who plays Bronn could be quite good? I dunno, depends how well he can play fear.

Severard: Edward Norton

Others? I dunno, this series has a huge cast, plenty of room for good no-names to get a shot.

message 31: by Oded (new) - rated it 5 stars

Oded why are we not funding this??? why???

message 32: by Kasper (last edited Nov 16, 2015 11:55AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kasper Augustynek Jackman as Ninefingers is a good shout. I always had trouble picturing anyone as the Bloody-nine though. Ray Stevenson would be really good too.

For Bayaz, I always pictured Sean Connery. I reckon Terry O'Quinn would be no bad either.

For West, Michael Fassbender was who I imagined.

Robert Carlyle as Dogman is pretty much a given now.

Glokta; Christian Bale. I could totally see him pull that off.

Yulwei: I always had Morgan Freeman's voice in my head when reading Yulwei.

Arch Lector Sult: call me mad, but Jeff Bridges. I know he might be a bit too jolly, but still.

General Poulder: I don't know why, but I always imagined Ray Winstone.

Nicomo Cosca: Steven Ogg!! I don't see how it can be anyone else.

message 33: by Niels (last edited Nov 23, 2015 04:56AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Niels When reading through the First Law I couldn't help having Rowan Atkinson playing Glokta.

He really reminded me of Blackadder in the second season, not only the cynical sense of humour but the way of moving and talking also seems to fit Atkinson like a glove. The way I imagined it anyway :)

Steve Buscemi or Willem Dafoe as runners up.

Bayaz - Sean Connery, no doubt!
Logen - Russel Crowe
Thunderhead - Vince Vaughn (Wayne in Into the Wild)
Black Dow - Ben Foster (Charley Prince, 3:10 to Yuma)
West - Sean Bean indeed
Jezal - has to be Brad Pitt
Cosca - Johnny Depp or the guy playing Bronn in Game of Thrones

Niels Jason Robards for the Dogman! :)

(Cheyenne in Once upon a Time in the west)

Niels Shivers - Clive Standen (Rollo in the Vikings series)

Zabuzasama26 Glokta is not that old people ... yes the scars and signs of torture are greatly distinct but that could be done with good makeup and good acting. He is still 35, and by the end only 36. I don't see why so many old (albeit great) actors were particularly chosen for his role.

That said, Tom hiddleston would make a great Glokta, as I read someone mention. Also I had in mind Paul Bettany. He'd make a perfect Glokta.

I don't know why no one has mentioned Charles Dance for either Arch Lector Sult or Bayaz yet.

Maria Kirova Zabuzasama26 wrote: "Glokta is not that old people ... yes the scars and signs of torture are greatly distinct but that could be done with good makeup and good acting. He is still 35, and by the end only 36. I don't se..."

I entirely agree with you about Glokta, Paul Bettany is a great actor and would fit the role perfectly. Besides, Glokta was a very handsome man before the torture.

As for Charles Dance - I imagine him as Lord Marshal Varuz.

Youssef Azzam These are the ones I can think of right now
Bayaz : Ian McShane
Dogman : Mackenzie Crook
Glokta : James Purefoy
Sult : Charles Dance
Longfoot : Noah Taylor
Blackdow : Ralph Ineson

Characters that have a defining aesthetic , like Jezal, Logen and Tul are the hardest to cast as they can easily fall victim to being too generic.
