Wilco-Pot Kettle Black

Crazy rides rockets
Who has a magic wand
Empty out your pockets
Words without a song

I myself have found a real rival in myself
I am hoping for a re-arrival of my health

Sleeping eye sockets
Baby suck your thumb
I'll keep you in my locket
A string I never strum

It's become so obvious
You are so oblivious to yourself

You're tied in a knot
But I'm not gonna get caught
Calling a pot kettle black
Every song's a comeback
Every moment's a little bit later

Lazy locomotives
wherever you may roll
I think you have no motive
I know you have no home

It's become so obvious
You are so oblivious to yourself

You're tied in a knot
But I'm not gonna get caught
Calling a pot kettle black
Every song's a comeback
Every moment's a little bit later
Every moment's a little bit later
Every moment's a little bit later
Every moment's a little bit later

Ani DiFranco - I'm No Heroine

i'm no heroine

you think i wouldn't have him
unless i could have him by the balls
you think i just dish it out
you don't think i take it at all
you think i am stronger
you think i walk taller than the rest
you think i'm usually wearing the pants
just 'cause i rarely wear a dress

well...

when you look at me
you see my purpose,
see my pride
you think i just saddle up my anger
and ride and ride and ride
you think i stand so firm
you think i sit so high on my trusty steed
let me tell you
i'm usually face down on the ground
when there's a stampede

i'm no heroine
at least, not last time i checked
i'm too easy to roll over
i'm too easy to wreck
i just write about
what i should have done
i just sing
what i wish i could say
and hope somewhere
some woman hears my music
and it helps her through her day

'cause some guy designed
these shoes i use to walk around
some big man's business turns a profit
every time i lay my money down
some guy designed the room i'm standing in
another built it with his own tools
who says i like right angles?
these are not my laws
there are not my rules

i'm no heroine
i still answer to the other half of the race
i don't fool myself
like i fool you
i don't have the power
we just don't run this place

My favorite song. Ever.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments Beck - Loser

Forces of evil on a bozo nightmare
Ban all the music with a phony gas chamber
’cuz one’s got a weasel and the other’s got a flag
One’s on the pole, shove the other in a bag
With the rerun shows and the cocaine nose-job
The daytime crap of the folksinger slob
He hung himself with a guitar string
A slab of turkey-neck and it’s hangin’ from a pigeon wing
You can’t write if you can’t relate
Trade the cash for the beef for the body for the hate
And my time is a piece of wax fallin’ on a termite
who's chokin’ on the splinters

I'm the kid who ran away with the circus
Now I'm watering elephants
But I sometimes lie awake in the sawdust
Dreaming I'm in a suit of light

Late at night in the empty big top
I'm all alone on the high wire
Ladies and gentlemen, there is no net this time
He's a real death defier

I'm the kid who always looked out the window
Failing the tests in geography
But I have seen things far beyond just this schoolyard
Distant shores of exotic lands

There's the spires of the Turkish empire
Six months since we made landfall
Riding low with the spices of India
Through Gibralter, we're rich men all

I'm the kid who thought we'd someday be lovers
Always held out that time would tell
Time was talking
Guess I just wasn't listening
No surprise, if you know me well

As we're walking down toward the train station
I hear a whispering rainfall
Across the boulevard, you slip your hand in mine
In the distance the train's last call

I'm the kid who has this habit of dreaming
That sometimes gets me in trouble too
But the truth is
I could no more stop dreaming
Than I could make them all come true

The Kid -- by Buddy Morlock, though I like the David Wilcox version

Félix (habitseven) Here Comes the Sun Again M. Ward

Kingdoms and queens they all bow down to you,
Branches and ranch hands are bowin' too
And Ive taken off my straw hat for you, singing
Here comes the sun again

The leaves on the trees they all call out your name,
Chrome on the freight line shines the same
And the stars in their cars roll their tops down for you singing,
Here comes the sun again

Oh but if you're gunna stay show some mercy today
Blow a little breeze on my face

Snow banks drift down the hillside for you,
Slides inside sandy river before the day is through,
And before evenin' falls I may find myself there too, singing
Here comes the sun again

(I have nothing against a little Ratt every now and then, by the way)

I love the 80s for music. Especially twangy Americana country and rockin' sax solos, not to mention early rap.

I'm being serious; or am I?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments Having been a teenager in the '80s, I can't be impartial about '80s music. Yes, some of it sucked, but it was the soundtrack to my high school years. And at least it wasn't rap. I hate rap.

message 11: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments well, i listened to my share of LoverBoy on my pioneer supertuner through jensen triaxle speakers in my '70 cutlass in the early 80's but that doesn't mean in the long run it was good music jackie.

sally - you are not

message 12: by Shana (new)

Shana (shanac55) | 98 comments Kevin- hahahahahaha! Geez, I hate the 80s. Only when I look back though. I thought my big hair was pretty cool when I was linin' in it. yikes!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments Of COURSE Loverboy sucked, Kevin. But Peter Gabriel didn't. They Might Be Giants didn't. The Cars didn't...

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I was a little punk rocker on the northwest side of Chicago in the eighties.

But I can appreciate Loverboy now, and long as that guy doesn't wear the leather pants.

message 26: by Matt (new)

Matt | 819 comments This song always cracks me up because it sounds like it was written by a bitter drunk who is lamenting the fact that no one likes him and no one will care when he dies. However, his dispair is so grandiose that in his own mind he morphs into an unappreciated artist, then one of the Kennedys, and finally into a character of almost Christ-like proportions by the end of the song.

Lay Me Low - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

They're gonna lay me low
They're gonna sink me in the snow
They're gonna throw back their heads and crow
When I go
They're gonna jump and shout
They're gonna wave their arms about
All the stories will come out
When I go
All the stars will glow bright
And my friends will give up the fight
They'll see my work in a different light
When I go
They'll try telephoning my mother
But they'll end up getting my brother
Who'll spill the story on some long-gone lover
That I hardly know
Hats off to the man
On top of the world
Come crawl up here, baby
And I'll show you how it works
If you wanna be my friend
And you wanna repent
And you want it all to end
And you wanna know when
Well do it now don't care how
Take your final bow
Make a stand
Take my hand
And blow it all to hell
They're gonna inform the police chief
Who'll breathe a sigh of relief
He'll say I was a malanderer, a badlander, and a thief
When I go
They will interview my teachers
Who'll say I was one of God's sorrier creatures
There'll print informative six-page features
When I go
They'll bang a big old gong
The motorcade will be ten miles long
The world will join together for a farewell song
When they put me down below
They'll sound a fluegelhorn
And the sea will rage, and the sky will storm
All man and beast will mourn
When I go
Hats off to the man
On top of the world
Come crawl up here, baby
And we can watch this damn thing turn
If you wanna be my friend
And you wanna repent
And you want it all to end
And you wanna know when
Well do it now Do it now
Take a long last bow
Take my hand Make a stand
And blow it all to hell
Lay me low...
When I go...

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments Fistful Of Steel - RATM

the line "something about silence makes me sick" has always been intriguing to me

Huh!
Check it...uggh!
Silence
Something about silence makes me sick
'Cause silence can be violent
Sorta like a slit wrist

If the vibe was suicide
Then you would push da button
But if ya bowin' down
Then let me do the cuttin'

Some speak the sounds
But speak in silent voices
Like radio is silent
Though it fills the air with noises
Its transmissions bring submission
As ya mold to the unreal
And mad boy grips the microphone
Wit' a fistful of steel
Yeah...and mad mad boy grips the microphone
Wit' a fistful of steel

by: The Moody Blues

Nights in white satin,
Never reaching the end,
Letters Ive written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty Id always missed
With these eyes before,
Just what the truth is
I cant say anymore.

cause I love you,
Yes, I love you,
Oh, how, I love you.

Gazing at people,
Some hand in hand,
Just what Im going thru
They can understand.

Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend,
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end,

And I love you,
Yes, I love you,
Oh, how, I love you.
Oh, how, I love you.

Nights in white satin,
Never reaching the end,
Letters Ive written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty Id always missed
With these eyes before,
Just what the truth is

message 31: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) If we are throwing out 80s lyrics, I'm putting my two cents in. Or at least the lyrics of one of my favorite songs of all time.

R.E.M.'s "Perfect Circle"

Put your hair back, we get to leave
Eleven gallows on your sleeve
Shallow figure, winners paid
Eleven shadows way out of place
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room

Pull your dress on and stay real close
Who might leave you where I left off?
A perfect circle of acquaintances and friends
Drink another, coin a phrase
Heaven assumed, shoulders high in the room
Heaven assumed, shoulders high in the room
Heaven assumed, shoulders high in the room

Try to win and suit your needs
Speak out sometimes but try to win
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room
Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Epilepsy is Dancing-Antony and the Johnsons

Epilepsy is dancing
She’s the Christ now departing
And I’m finding my rhythm
As I twist in the snow

All the metal burned in me
Down the brain of my river
That fire was searching
For a waterway home

I cry “glitter is love!”
My eyes pinned inside
With green jewels
Hanging like Christmas stars
From a golden vein

As I came to a screaming
Hold me while I’m dreaming
For my fingers are curling
And I cannot breathe

Then I cried in the kitchen
How I’d seen your ghost witching
As a soldering blue line
Between my eyes

I cry “glitter is love!”
My eyes
Pinned inside
Sea green jewels
Hanging like Christmas stars
From a golden vein

Cut me in quadrants
Leave me in the corner
Oh now it’s passing
Oh now I’m dancing
