Ahmed Jadoon (ahmedjadoon) | 4 comments Hello! I'm Ahmed from Abbottabad. I developed the habit to read back when I was in a boarding school. I'm a medical student now and it's really difficult to spare any time for reading due to college. I got some free time now due to the Corona outbreak related college closure and started to read The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown.
I hope you guys are doing well. Looking forward to making new friends here.
Thanks

Zarshal Saeed (zarshalsaeed) | 814 comments Heyy Ahmed #2!
You see, I called you that because we already have a Ahmed here and he’s really nice and helpful and friendly, I hope you don’t mind. I welcome you to Pakistani Readers’ Group!

You’re from Abbottabad? Me too! Do you study medical at Ayub Medical College? What year?

Okay enough with the questions. I hope you have a great time here, which I’m sure you will, and make great new friends, which I’m sure you will!
Stay indoors, stay safe and happy reading everyone! :))

Thank you so much for a warm welcome. I can also pretend to be a nice guy for a while. Just kidding.
I'm a 4th year student at KMC, Peshawar. So, we are "ganraein". They call it "kaliwaal" in Peshawar.
Where do you study? How do you manage to get time to read books while being in a college/university?

message 2059: by Zarshal (new)

Zarshal Saeed (zarshalsaeed) | 814 comments Always a pleasure!
Hahaha yeah. I know kaliwaal. I study with a lot of pushto speakers. (Who still haven’t been able to teach me pushto 🙄)
Anyhoo.
I study at Comsats, Atd. Civil engineering. And yeah it gets pretty busy at times tou I don’t really get a lot of time to read books during my most-busy days (during exams and quizzes and sessionals and stuff, which is pretty much all the time xD)
But still, somehow I just manage to make time for books. Even if I can read a page or two on my way to the university in the morning or on my way back home or in between classes.
Because I just can’t live without books.

Syed Mashhood Murtaza (mashhood) | 2 comments Hello Pakistani Readers!

I am a highly enthusiastic but pathetically slow reader, a 'jack of many trades' by education, a teacher at COMSATS University Abbottabad (Electrical & Computer Engineering Dept.) and currently quarantined because a neighbor has been tested positive!

I started my fiction readings with Inspector Jamshed, Mehmood, Farooq, Farzana Series of Ishtiaq Ahmed and I feel I lead a parallel life with them in their fantasy world's 'Pakland'. Ever since I read my first non-fiction book by Stephen Hawking, I feel jealous of all who have read more books because every book feels like opening up a new world!

When I incidentally found and joined goodreads in 2016, I was delighted to find such a nice and energetic Pakistani readers' community. This lovely community and the wonderful habit of reading seem part of what nature intends reviving - by locking humans indoors :)

message 2065: by W (new)

W Welcome, the Inspector Jamshed series brings back some fond memories.

gone (hahalolol) hey and salaams :) i'm sal, i'm 20, and i'm trying my best to read "halal" books in ramadan, which is hard considering you usually only find clean books under the middle-grade readers fiction section, and i'd rather not spend the entire month reading children's books, thanks. look forward to getting to know you all!

Just don't read the slurs lmao
Imagine not reading a whole book just cuz there are a few words in it that you can't read

Big brain moment

message 2071: by Muhammad (new)

Muhammad Sabeel | 7 comments AoA. I am Sabeel. I love to read though I have kinda become a casual reader due to the many digital distractions. I find the gdrds website not good enough for forums like this. Forums starts with the oldest threads and u have to scroll down all the way to the latest threads/comments to add comments. I wish the app were updated and discussions could be easier.

message 2072: by gone (new)

gone (hahalolol) @Muhammad Ozair
it's not about fantasy or scifi (though i do love those), it's more about having main characters that are older. i've read quite a few good middle grade books though recently!

also i actually meant "books that aren't filled with romance" lol

message 2073: by Komal (new)

Komal (k0k0) | 219 comments Wow. This group is still alive.

message 2074: by Uzair (new)

Uzair | 1172 comments @Komal
Only barely.

@sal
no I meant as in would you prefer I recommend fantasy or middle grade books. oh I agree bout the romance thing , it's ecchi and usually stale.

message 2075: by gone (new)

gone (hahalolol) @Muhammad Ozair
OH i didn't realise! yes please rec either/both/anything you like really :)

message 2076: by Uzair (new)

Uzair | 1172 comments @Sal
By category , my go-to picks:

•Fantasy:
Toby Alone ( May prove difficult to find , but totally worth it.)

• Sci-Fi:
Enders Game.
(The Planet thieves is a close second).

•Comics:
The Solo Leveling Manhwa. Can be read for free online - and it's actually legal.

• Series :
Skulduggery Pleasant 1-9. Humor , wit , thrill and emotion , it has it all.

message 2077: by gone (new)

gone (hahalolol) @Muhammad Ozair
thank you so much! i'll add them all to my tbr now (and i've been searching for skullduggery pleasant for a very long time but to no avail...)

message 2080: by Falak (new)

Falak Azeem (queen_of_warriors) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Falak.
Looks like i found you guys and this post a little late but no worries. :)
I usually read fiction, fantasy, YA, and romance but i also like to read about history, politics, wars and science. I'm a Science student and currently enrolled in Mphil Zoology. It's nice to see that we have bibliophiles in Pakistan. I believe that reading English literature like this will help build us our English skills (where our countrymen lack). I've learned many things from books and if any of you have any good book suggestions then kindly share.

message 2081: by Muhammad (new)

Muhammad Sabeel | 7 comments @Queen Of Warriors

Hi. I am Sabeel. Since u said u like reading fiction, i thougt I'd recommend the book I am reading currently. i.e. The Book Thief. Though it's a slow story yet I find it interesting enough to continue. It's a story about a German girl who loves to read and it is written in 1940s background. Happy reading.

message 2082: by gone (new)

gone (hahalolol) @Falak
welcome :) our countrymen may in theory lack english skills, but i face the opposite: too many english novels have caused me to stray too far away from my mothertongue, and i now find it difficult to read urdu!
based on the genres you've mentioned, might i recommend six of crows by leigh bardugo and the winner's curse by marie rutkoski? it's been a while since i read the latter but i do remember thinking it was really good

And yes,it's tough to find 100 % halal books.

message 2088: by gone (new)

gone (hahalolol) i found a few i think but not many... also i may have given up on that intention because i had to read some not-at-all halal books for school lol 🤡

message 2089: by W (last edited May 21, 2020 08:17AM) (new)

W Yes,there are too many non halal books out there, when one comes to think about it.But you seem to have given up very early,it was such a noble intention to read halal books only.

message 2090: by gone (new)

gone (hahalolol) oh i did try my best and probably succeeded when it came to reading books i selected... there were however books i had to read for school and i was unable to skip them, hence my overall plan may not have succeeded :)

message 2091: by W (new)

W Any examples of the non halal books you read for school ?

Here's a cracked apk of anybooks:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1pftqi9l5cq...

Just download and install on your phone. Alternatively, you can download epubs from b-ok.org and then use the Aldiko book reader app to read stuff. It's less convenient than anybooks but has all the benefits, in case anybooks spergs out again.
