Fantasy (YA?) in which there is a prince (king?) with clockwork in his heart, saving his child /s

The story is possibly a story within a story. All I remember is a prince an his wife have a child. I think it was very difficult for them to conceive. The boy gets sick when he is young so the father takes him to a clockmaker maybe? I think the child might be an automaton. The clockmaker replaces the boys heart with the fathers and puts a crude piece of machinery into the fathers chest. It causes the man to whip his horses all the way back to the castle, where the servants cut him open to see that all that has kept him going is the gears. He is already dead. Hope someone can help me! Thanks!
