WINTER CHALLENGE 2012

30.7 - Sassafras's Task - It's My Anniversary!
Yes, major congratulations! Lucky you, getting to go someplace nice and warm for your anniversary, too! Will
work for mostly black?
Fiona (Titch) wrote: "Runaway Heart - Claudy Conn option 1 and A Pearl Comb for a Lady - Julia Bell option 2?"Runaway Heart works for 12 letters in title but
A Pearl Comb for a Lady looks like it is an ebook without a print edition so it doesn't work. If you have sprint edition you will need to get it added to goodreads.

"Thanks, Sandy. The Bone Bed works. The other two don't seem to be more than half for the color.
Chaitra wrote: "Advance wishes for your 12th anniversary, Sassafras! Is this black enough for option 4?
"Thanks, Chairtra. And your book works.
Ms Anderson wrote: "Yes, major congratulations! Lucky you, getting to go someplace nice and warm for your anniversary, too! Will

Yay! Thank you. I'm trying to fit the full quartet into the challenge since the last book just came out, so I'm using Gathering Blue and The Messenger (for the 12-letter option).
Oh Sorry Sheila my autocorrect changed you to Sandy. But I'm glad one of the books works for you. I'm glad it work out for you Ms Anderson.

Cassie wrote: "I've read the rules but how do we participate?"Hi Cassie! Welcome to the Challenge. :) This is the help thread for my specific task, but right now what we are doing is gearing up for the winter challenge that starts on December 1, 2012.
The first thing you need to do is set up your readerboard name. You can go here to request a name. You'll need that to be able to participate.
Also, if you have general questions about the challenge, this thread is a good place to start
black and/or gold enough?
I realize those couple of "gold" ones are more of a yellow/orange gold -- is that okay or do the covers have to be like a metallic gold?
I'll take the last two for gold. I'll also take all of those black ones. The only one I won't take is the 3rd from the end. It's doesn't seem to have a dominant color. It's more half and half.
Oh okay, I had thought it was "black and/or gold" rather than just "or". That's fine, it looks like I've got plenty of other options!
Sassafrass, Can I read a ebook as long as it has a print version around or not? Also it was approved for length message 1747: by Dlmrose not sure if that is any help x

Fiona, you can read an ebook for any of the other options but #2. Even for #2 you CAN read an ebook, but ONLY if it has a print edition with the appropriate page numbers. Does that make sense?
Yes, that's great. I was looking at Bloodstone - The Guardian's Curse - J. Michael Radcliffe as it was published in December 2011?The paperback copy was published in January 2012 x

You are going by the "first published" date which happens to be 12/23/11 for this book. So brownie points for you because you found a book actually published ON my anniversary. :P
Ok I am going to be traveling most of today for the Thanksgiving holiday. I'll check in when I can but don't be concerned if I don't answer for several hours.
Ms Anderson wrote: "Sassafrass wrote: "Ms Anderson wrote: "Yes, major congratulations! Lucky you, getting to go someplace nice and warm for your anniversary, too! Will

(I was going to do the same two books as you, which is why I noticed this in the first place). So you might want to double check with the Mod on this one as well...
No Kate it DOES work. The task says 12 letters total in the title so the messenger is 12 letters. It doesn't matter how many words just as long as it has the appropriate amount of letters.
Right, but (on my copy at least) there is no 'the' in the title. It's just Messenger. So just 9 letters. That's why I was assuming that it didn't work. I could be confused on this matter though. Let me know.
may i please have some clarification for option 3? it states to read a book set in the caribbean. does it have to be an island, or can it be set on the mainland in one of the countries that border the caribbean? thanks for your help! :)

Now if there is a different version with "the" and it's on goodreads then I will take it. Sorry I misunderstood your point.
Sassafrass wrote: "It has to be set on a Caribbean island. I will make the wording clearer."thanks for your quick response! :)
I assume that NF would be OK as in this book: The Spice Necklace: A Food-Lover's Caribbean Adventure
I want to read Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and the author is Seth Grahame-Smith. His last name HYPHENATED has 12 letters. Can I count this for Option 1?
Kate wrote: "Ms Anderson wrote: "Sassafrass wrote: "Ms Anderson wrote: "Yes, major congratulations! Lucky you, getting to go someplace nice and warm for your anniversary, too! Will [bookcover:Gathering Blue|12..."
Crud. Maybe I should learn to read! lol I've got others that'll work, no problem. Thanks for the heads up!
CassieV wrote: "Is this
too orange? Or would it count for gold?"I can't tell from my computer. So, if it appears gold to you, I'll take it. When you get the book if it does look more orange, just let me know.
However, if you do use it, please point out when you post that it's a gold color so the mods know what you are going for since it they may not be able to tell from their computer screens either.
Andy P.For #1, Can I use an author whose hyphenated last name adds up to twelve letters i.e. Cynthia Harrod-Eagles ?

As long as the official goodreads name is hyphenated you can use it. If it shows as two separate names then no.

Yes it does show the hyphen, so I guess I'm ok?

December 23rd marks twelve wonderful years of marriage for me and my hubby. Celebrate with me by picking two different options and reading a book for each one.
1. Read a book with 12 letters in the author’s first or last name (NOT the two names combined), the title (subtitles/series names do not count, but the title can contain any number of words that add up to a total of 12 letters) or a book that is #12 in a series (the book must be identified as #12 of a series on the goodreads page)
2. Read a book whose total number of pages add up to 12. examples: 354, 192 or 561 pages. Note: ebooks without a print edition do not count for this option. Required: State the number of pages in your post. Readers of alternative formats (ebooks, audiobooks, and large print books) must link to the mass market paperback or other edition used to establish number of pages.
3. Since we are going to Tortola, British Virgin Islands for our anniversary, read a book that’s set in one of the islands in the Caribbean. *If you need help with the islands of the Caribbean, you can use this list: Islands in the Caribbean.
4. My husband and I met and started dating in college at Xavier University of New Orleans. So, read a book that is set in New Orleans, has a college setting, or has a mostly black or gold cover. Note: if you use the cover option the book must be more than half of the color specified.
5. Read a book with the genre “Romance” listed on the book's main page.
6. Read a book whose original publishing date is either in December (of any year) or in the year 2000.
Required: state option numbers you choose, if you choose a cover option please include the cover in your post, and if it is not obvious from the goodreads description please identify how your book fits the option.
