Tyler MacFarlane vs Edward Cullen

Firstly, I should mention that I am NOT a Twilight fan and I've never read it, so I'm just gonna base my description of Edward Cullen from stuff that I've read so far.
Also, I think my question would be best for people who dislike Edward Cullen but adore Tyler. So please don't hate on me, I'm not saying Edward is better or anything.
Okay so anyway, my question is why do you hate Edward Cullen but adore Tyler?
According to what I've read, issues with Edward are that he is too controlling, too stalker-ish, too emotionally abusive, he tries to control Bella by turning those she can trust against her, etc.
So how is Tyler different from Edward, in your opinion? He kidnapped Gemma, didn't allow her to contact her family/friends, has injured Gemma a few times (probably unintentionally but still), stalked her for many years, etc.
What is it about Tyler that makes you like him but detest Edward (who I'm going to assume you hate because of his controlling aspect and others I mentioned above).
Thanks for your time. I am genuinely curious. I should also mention that I absolutely adore Tyler. :D

Although I detest Twilight (I read the first and absolutely hated it - it was the worst written book I've ever read, besides a few Kindle Singles), I don't think this is even a fair comparison.
Tyler is a battered, lost soul. He obviously hasn't been what normal people call "sane" in a while. He doesn't know how to deal with love, but he really is a deep character.
Edward on the other hand, is a completely blank character that sparkles. He reminds me of the boyfriend from the movie Reviving Ophelia. A terrible actor played a terrible guy who knew what he was doing all along.
But that's just my opinion and my thoughts.

well Ty is is not capable to be a boyfriend,...he kidnapped Gemma, which makes all the wrong reasons, I think his not 'sane' enough to be one...but I LOVE him to be with Gemma though, silly me...I know its really wrong to fall in love with the captor, see Gemma didn't fall in love to Ty, she made a lot of escape route but still stuck but its close to think she did during their last hold...maybe I just want a HEA...:)
As for Edward, A lot of characters has the same persona as him but still love the possessive and controlling personality they put on to their girl:)
and for the fvcked up past, I think its not excusable...everyone has it:) everybody's got a dark side do you love me? can you love mine? the song Darkside says it all:)

I would say because the Ty-Gemma thing isn't a relationship dynamic, it's a kidnapper-kidnapped kind of thing, whereas Twilight is played out as a consensual relationship in which Edward acts much the same way as Tyler.
The character of Ty is broken and wild, and he makes you feel for him, much like he makes Gemma feel for him, even though you know that he's the bad guy and you shouldn't. Edward, however, just makes my skin crawl - Ty watches over Gemma because he cares about her and saves her from a questionable situation, but he never actually invades her personal space, and has a reason to love her other than just because he wants her tasty blood but - oh no! can't have it; vampire. So I guess I'll just sit in your room while you sleep instead.
I think the reason why some people don't like the book is the reason why others love it; the author pulls you in with wonderful writing and heart-racing, sometimes in a bad way, scenarios and she thrusts you almost as the place of Gemma, learning Ty's story, being afraid, and developing some kind of Stockholm Syndrome. Ty is not a good guy, he's a bad guy, even though he would never, ever hurt Gemma. He believes he's saving her and in his head, his actions are a mercy and SHE is the one that's crazy. The readers begin to reluctantly give their affection to this character and by the end, like Gemma, they're quite attached. I don't know whether this was the author's intention but that's generally the way it goes. Either that or you're a stone-hearted bad ass who'd hold up incredibly well in that kind of situation because you don't give any rope at all. Meanwhile, the rest of us are drowning in psychologically-warped Stockholm love! :D

ty is crazy, insane and mentally unwell
but likable and i loved him, found his character to be one of the best i have read in a book for a long time, and the story is utterly unique and incredible.
i cant explain it but i liked him in the book i felt sorry for him, he had never grown up because of his upbringing. he lost his home, his father and mother and so once he found gemma he couldn't loose her too. what he does is madness but is out of love (his version of it but still) he truly believes he is protecting her and saving her from an evil place
the writer is genius she make you love ty and want him and gemma to be in love, its actually a very unnerving book when you think about it
falling for the bad guy
