Deb | 2531 comments We have never had a challenge in this group. Ever!

Mostly because I, personally, am not a fan of them. I read slowly, can barely keep up with some monthly reading we do, and don't want to keep track of one more thing.

But......we have reached over 1000 members! So to celebrate I am posting a do-able challenge for us. I've looked at some other groups to see how they do their challenges and am taking bits and pieces to create ours.

Here's the categories:
1. Read a book with 1000 (thousand) in the title. List the book.
2. Read 1000 pages. List the books that you read that contributed to reaching the 1000 pages.
3. The roman numeral for 1000 is M. Read any author whose first or last name begins with M. List the book.
4. Read for 1000 minutes. 1000 minutes = approx 16 hours. Read in one hour blocks of time at least 16 times. If you read for 2 hours, it counts as 2 units. This one will be on the honor system, unless you really want to list the dates you read for at least an hour--entirely up to you.

Here's the rules:
1. Any book you read can count toward more than one of the above categories.
2. If interested in the challenge, copy the categories and post below. As you work on your challenge, come back to your original post and update it.
3. The challenge will begin November 15th and run through January 15th. On January 16th, this post will be closed, so be sure to keep your post updated.
4. Have Fun!

This is one of the best and highly engaging challenge I have seen in GR. It seems so doable that I want to get started right away but then it starts on 15th, so I shall wait. I'm in for all the four categories of the challenge.

Njoy!

Alena (AlenaM) | 1368 comments First of all, 1000 members!!!!! Wow. That's so terrific. Deb, you've created a mini miracle here. We are so lucky to have found you.

I will celebrate by committing to my first ever challenge.

I will
1. Read a book with 1000 (thousand) in the title. I'll have to research this.

I read One Thousand White Womenm which I liked very much.

2. Read 1000 pages.
Starting with Tell the Wolves I'm Home -- 355 pages.
Taft by Ann Patchett -- 246. (Total 601)
Flight Behavior - 436 (1037)
ONE PART DOWN!

3. The roman numeral for 1000 is M. Read any author whose first or last name begins with M.

I was going to read Kate Morton, but there was nothing on the library shelf so I settled on Laura Moriarty's The Chaperone. Also read Molly Ringwald's When It Happens To You, which counts, I guess.

4. Read for 1000 minutes. 1000 minutes = approx 16 hours.
I'm fairly certain this will be a no-brainer by January 15th. -- Looking at the rules again, 1-hour blocks will be a challenge, but I'm off to a good start this weekend.
2 units down, 14 to go.
3 more units over Thanksgiving, 11 to go.
1 more unit 10 to go (Wow, finding hour-long chuncks is tough)
2 units done this weekend 8 to go
1 more done, 7 to go.
2 more done, 5 to go (I think I'm going to make it)
1 done, 4 to go.
3 done on a pre-Christmas getaway, 1 chunk to go!
FINISHED with a New Year's reading marathon!!!

Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt
Taft by Ann Patchett
Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver
The Chaperone
Molly Ringwald One Thousand White Women The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus

Irene | 3024 comments Well, "Thousand Autumns of Jacob DeZoet" has been on my tbr pile for over a year and keeps getting bumped and the author's name begins with an M, David Mitchell. I'm golden for this challenge. LOL!

message 41: by Shar (new)

Shar | 34 comments 1. Read a book with 1000 (thousand) in the title. List the book

Here are my choices

1) A Thousand Acres

2) should be able to do this, will keep a tally as I go along

3) Wildcard - next on my list of Dr Steven Dunbar books to read

4) this should be quite easy in that time

Looking forward to getting start :o)

Deb, please calm my fears on this. I had assumed that whichever parts we partake in are our option, but now I'm wondering. Do we have to do all 4 parts to pass the challenge? I'm just not sure I'll find a book to qualify for #1 so didn't include that one. But I don't want to flunk out, either, or get an "incomplete". LOL

Thanks for always making this so interesting and fun!

Karen there are a lot of books with "thousand" in the title. Write the word out in the "add book/author" just above this post box - like you were looking for a particular book....you will see how many choices you have...

message 48: by Erica (new)

Erica Ramsey (ericaramsey) | 184 comments Does it actually have to be a thousand in the title? Would more than a thousand work? Cause I have A Million Little Pieces and Idk how well I'll be able to get my hands on a book that actually has 1000 in the title....but I'm totally in for the challenge! I can easily commit to:

2. Read 1000 pages.....simple.
3. Author whose first or last name starts with M....I'm pretty sure I've gotta couple in my growing stack of books I need to read.
4. Read for 1000 minutes, approximately 16 hrs....also simple.....

And I will TRY to do #1, though I'm not sure I will accomplish that one.
