I feel just the same way, having only read the first two of them. I like the archaelogical bits, but found the main character to be just a little "wooden" and the writing style somewhat stilted or something. Like you, it's hard to nail down exactly what the problem is, but it's been over a year since I read the second one and my fingers don't seem all that eager to pluck the next from the TBR pile...not that the books were horrible or anything, just plenty of other better/more interesting things to capture my attention, I guess.
