This is a short story free with a download of the Sony Reader app from iTunes. I'm wondering if it takes place after Ever After, due to an inaccuracy in the number of kisses that have happened so far between Rachel and Trent. I don't want any spoilers! If any of you who have read an ARC of Ever After could let me know, I'd appreciate it!

It's hard to say if there's spoilers or not, but if you haven't read Ever After yet, I wouldn't read this just yet. Also, OMG it was good! But not nearly enough.
Thanks that's good to know! I read enough to (view spoiler) but I won't read any more until January. Thanks again! :)
Unfortunately the app isn't working on my itunes. It looks like I need an ipod, iphone, or ipad. :-/
I have an iPod but it's an older version and I've never updated it (don't know how) so I'm not sure this will work for me but I'll try it tonight. It sucks that it's not available for everyone.
I just read it. I kinda "knew" the spoilers based on reviews and stuff for Ever After, so it didn't really ruin it for me. It will be interesting to read it from the other end.
On her blog Kim said, "The timing of the story sort of puts it between A Perfect Blood and Ever After, but the feeling of it is seriously slanted toward Ever After." Come on January! :) I'm having Trench withdrawals.
Author also says exclusive to Sony for limited time only; so should be showing up in other formats later (I'm just guessing a few weeks?).
*sigh* I just bought Into the Woods: Tales from the Hollows and Beyond thinking it had all the short stories in it.
@Jen: Kim has the timeline wrong. Trust me, it's AFTER Ever After. @Deb: The format is epub, which is available for any ereader that loads epubs. It's just that the app itself (which you can also get on Droid phones) is only limiting release to Apple people.
I got the short story off my coworker's iPhone and am currently giving it away to my blog followers upon request. If you don't mind slight Ever After spoilers, then you can see how to get it here:

Im excited to read it - thank you VampireNovelFan for sending it to me :) I'm waiting until I read Ever After though as I don't want to spoil anything for myself.
Bleh. I guess I can download it onto my phone or iPod but I hate to read anything long on those. Oh well...Thanks Zee!
Veronica G. wrote: "I know squat about technology. Can I get that on my nook?"Nook does handle ePub books perfectly fine (if you've ever used nook to read a public library ebook that's likely to have been an ePub book) ; just file was initially only available in the new Sony app for iOS devices. I'd keep an eye out for it to stop being exclusive (not impossible nook tablets would get the Sony app but unlikely).
[EDIT: Sony Reader now also available for android/droid/google/linux devices]
Veronica G. wrote: "I know squat about technology. Can I get that on my nook?"I can convert the file to an Epub version if you want it :)

I don't think that's legal; even if you don't strip the drm to convert the current copyright permissions are clearly exclusive to Sony at this time. Distribution permissions are likely currently with Sony, the author, the author's authorized agent or the book publisher. I thought Ms. Harrison had blogged it was exclusive to Sony for a limited time and then she would be making more widely available.
Offered free to readers does not mean it is not copyrighted.
I could be wrong if you did obtain distribution permission. It's being offered free to fans so personally I'd wait out the limited time only Sony is allowed to distribute.
(nook is actually based on android os so could just be a matter of time but Barnes and Noble not exactly in a hurry approving competing ereader apps.)
You can send the book to people by email directly from the app (through the iOS version at least), so I don't think they're that stringent about it, and if they are it'd need to be harder than that!
VampireNovelFan wrote: "You can send the book to people by email directly from the app (through the iOS version at least), so I don't think they're that stringent about it, and if they are it'd need to be harder than that!"I don't think how "hard" it is to break a copyright or share a file is a legal guideline. ereaders and apps like Sony Reader purposefully make it easy to share file among your devices for your own personal use.
On hardcopies, not exactly hard to push a button on a copier or scanner. Doesn't mean author specifically said on public website/blog/post that anyone could share out, did so verbally or in writing specifically to you, or issued that permission in their copyright notice in hardcopy or digital file.
I'm a kindle gal for the most part, but I feel like this short story could be an exception because it's free and it came with the device upon download. I would think purchased books are a little harder, but I know virtually nothing about Sony stuff.
Copyright is the same whether purchased or free digital edition. "Free or for fee" don't matter; copyright permissions are just what's in the copyright notice.[EDITING MY OVER LATE NIGHT POSTS - did not mean to make such long posts. Copyright Compliances get auto-pilot knee jerk reactions from me]
Hey! I just pulled up the short story n my iPad2 and my copyright page says something completely different. i must not have downloaded the drm-free file that gave anyone downloading story via Sony Reader permission to convert and distribute the file freely. I'll try to upload a screenshot of the notice I get in the dumb edition I got stuck with by clicking link author put on goodreads' book page. Is there a better link that grants file converting and distribution permission on author's blog or website? I would, of course prefer to get that one.
Here's the whole page copyright from my Sony-for-iPad file:
Go to http://d.gr-assets.com/photos/1354766... to see larger view of copyright text. Not having any luck enlarging here. Http://gr-assets.com is goodreads new cdn content handling website (confirm that it is safe at this goodreads thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... ). Before downloading mystery links from sites not operated by author, publisher, Apple or Sony, please be very careful they are not torrent sites with illegal files whether or not malicious.
You guys may as well be speaking another language for all that any of this makes no sense to me. LOLI did download the app for android but can't find the story anywhere.
Did you download app from link author posted on goodreads page? If so, should be able to just open it, and click the "Try app now" (don't have to sign in or create an account) and story auto loads.Or did you get directly from your device in the Google Play options? Again you can just "try" app choice but right now google is having issues with Sony Reader and an android update they pushed out that might be your problem and it could just suddenly start working soon.
FINAL ANSWER ON FILE SHARING THIS STORY For those if you who don't like reading the copyrights and who skipped or skimmed the Sony Reader terms of service, maybe you prefer to read the wikipedia version. That's at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Reader and an excerpt is:
"...Compatibility with Adobe digital rights management (DRM) protected PDF and ePub files allows Sony Reader owners to...The DRM rules of the Reader allow any purchased e-book to be read on up to six devices, at least one of which must be a personal computer running Windows or Mac OS X. Although the owner cannot share purchased eBooks on others' devices and accounts, the ability to register five Readers to a single account and share books accordingly is a possible workaround..."
Sorry Debbie, thanks for all of the info but I'm not going to read all of that. I skimmed some. I just remember when it was on my coworker's iPhone around the first couple of days, I was able to email it to myself with no issue and I remember it saying it was okay to send to others, or else I wouldn't have been able to share it. It was through the app that was approved by HC so *shrugs*
Oh well...you have the file so you can go to its copyright page yourself to read what it says. (By HC you mean publisher Harper Collins? If so and you can still get a s screen shot of text where they said it was okay to distribute, that could help if you run afoul of any PTB by sharing file.)I just had that different copyright page that was very definitely a "personal use" one and did not see same message you got when emailing. i'm fairly certain the file drm will stop the emailing/downloading outside Sony Reader stuff from working anyway; should not keep working past limited number of authorized devices associated with the file.
@VampireNovelFan, at some point sharing out, did the file stop working for people? If not, someone needs to tell Ms. Harrison there's something goofy with how Sony handled her file. Should have been limited to 5 devices registered to same account.
Just read it (was waiting until after Ever After in case of spoilers) Good story. I see (view spoiler)

I just signed into your blog and clicked "get the story" below where I put my email. I hope I can get the story "Trouble on Reserve."
Ronove wrote:"I just signed into your blog and clicked "get the story" below where I put my email. I hope I can get the story "Trouble on Reserve." "
I hope you get it soon! I got it thanks to VNF too! This story is worth it and was such a huge blessing in the pre-Ever After days ^_^
I just read the story. Nope, this takes place definitely, absolutely AFTER "Ever After." I don't care what Kim says - I can prove it's AFTER. Right up front, Rache mentions Trent's drunken confession and a few kisses, I think she said two kisses. Definitely AFTER "Ever After."
More: the discussion that Ellasbeth might be the one that did (what happened to Trent), to avoid spoilers. Custody conversaion, a short one. AFTER Ever After. BEFORE Ever After there was no hint of any joint custody - and definitely, Ellasbeth and Trent both have NO claim on Ray. So "the girls" mentioned in the context of custody means this is after Ever After. Definitely.
Lastly, Rachel pulls a leyline and the line is clean and fine.
and yeah, Cormel. Rachel needs to BE the demon she is and squash that stupid vamp whining "oh my soul" fool. Squash him like a bug to let him know he IS threatening a demon.
Kisten TOLD Rachel that the soul is held in heaven awaiting the 2nd death. Rachel can't go to heaven and steal a soul for whining vamps. Vamps need to DEAL with their situation, not whine about it. It never occurred to them that if they got souls back, they might no longer be vampires? HA. Wouldn't that be dandy.
Uh, the story can be gotten elsewhere if you know where to look. Hint: ePub dump.
TWiser wrote: "Kim said between APB and EA."Can't be. Kim is wrong! the LINE Rachel pulls is working fine, clean and pure. the drunken confession and 2 kisses - happened at the end of Ever After, not in the middle. The talk of Ellasbeth and the girls (plural) and custody - AFTER Ever After.
Speaking of which, all that illegality with genetic fixing. The tech is there. They should strive to make that legal again, putting forth those suffering cancer victims, the children, and diabetes and other stuff that could be so easily fixed genetically. They should strive to make it legal again - they have the money to push it. As for the vamps using their power connections to defeat it (for fear they won't be top dogs anymore) - the elves have demons on their side. It needs to be legalized.
In case anyone guesses, I dont really LIKE the vamps in this universe. They are whiney f'ed up and pathetic - and they should stick to themselves and stop bothering people.
The gall of it, THREATENING a freaking DEMON? and it's only thru Rachel's TOO-good graces that Cormel and Felix still stand.
Uh, the story can be gotten elsewhere if you know where to look. Hint: ePub dump..."Not with author's permission it can't; even if downloading to an ereader, keep in mind there is malware for every operating system including ereaders so be very, very careful of the "extra"-payload you can get when downloading files from sites or persons who do not respect author's copyright assignments.
Kim Harrison is very active about blogging and posting and will no doubt keep everyone up to date as to where to obtain legitimate story/file.
I wholeheartedly agree with Debbie. Kim works very hard at her craft. Her writing is very intricate and the plot very tight. She deserves all the credit!
Well it's months later and you can still email the story with no difficulty through the Sony Reader app itself on the iPhone, so there's no risk of malware there.
Debbie wrote: "Uh, the story can be gotten elsewhere if you know where to look. Hint: ePub dump..."Not with author's permission it can't; even if downloading to an ereader, keep in mind there is malware for eve..."
I'll also wait for her to release the story, perhaps a new book of short stories - some would have to be short stories since they might not be from Rachel's POV.
anyone can get the story with the app - and the app is free.
Rita wrote: "I wholeheartedly agree with Debbie. Kim works very hard at her craft. Her writing is very intricate and the plot very tight. She deserves all the credit!"she's not charging anything for the story. It's free with a free app.
