Hayes (Hayes13) A little repetitive, but I suppose Melville is trying to give "verisimilitude" to the narrative, which is anything but "bald and unconvincing". Just a bit long winded...

And I too know that Sperm Whales show up in the Mediterranean every now and then. Great White Sharks, too. The sharks hang out off the coast of Sardinia, where the water is very deep, very cold, and full of things to eat. Fortunately they do not bother the swimmers... I think they show up during the winter months. [ETA: the sharks, I mean, not the swimmers.]

Hayes (Hayes13) Apparently the Mediterranean Sperm Whale is a separate species:

*hugs Hayes for Mikado reference*

Hayes (Hayes13) Another G&S fan? Cool!!

Tracey (Stewartry) Mikado, at least - somehow I've never seen any of the other operettas ... But I know The Mikado almost by heart. (Back when A&E was actually Arts and Entertainment and not hoarders and bounty hunters they aired an absolutely perfect production that I watched over and over and over... I miss the old A&E.)

Hayes (Hayes13) We used to do one every year in high school. I was one of the taller girls, so I always got to play a pirate, or a policeman, or some other male chorus part.

My favorite I think is the Pirates of Penzance.

So many firsts, seconds, I feel I may need to read deeper to get the connections. (Could this be a literary construct with an underlying theme? I am a science teacher, so I always wonder things like this when reading carefully crafted literature...)
