[General] Introduce Yourself!
Low Fantasy: opposite ng high fantasy (usually but not limited to secondary world). You can think of it as "low magic" (in the case of the early books in A Song of Ice and Fire series) or something that takes place in the real world (100 Years of Solitude, Midnight's Children).
H wrote: "Just wondering..do any of you keep tabs on how much you spend yearly on books (whether brand new or from BS)?I have never done that, but I'm curious so I will try to do it this year...."
I don't. What I do is keep tabs on my extra money so I can buy books guilt-free. ;)
@*Anti-Twilight* OBSESSED WITH KYOUSUNA!!!*: Haha.@Maria Ella: Thank you! And I work for the Asian Development Bank as a contractor. I have a flight on the 11th (to England!), sa 27 pa ang balik ko.
Haha, maybe I'll bump into Jzhunagev around here, although hindi rin ako gaanong active. Of Doyle's, I really like Sir Nigel, the White Company, and the Exploits and Adventures of Brigadier Gerard. I really felt that he enjoyed writing those books.
@RA: Thanks, it's all right.
So I guess I like settings where the world is mostly normal and 'realistic' with one or two aspects that is magical (but low-key). I like seeing how that sort of magical influence can affect fictional social structures and economies.
@LS: Thank you! Hahaha!
@Angus: Thank you! I guess we're a sort of time twin thing or someting!
@Cary: Thanks!

I've yet to read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's historical fiction since I for the moment am wallowing in enjoyment reading his well-known creation Sherlock Holmes. But indeed I'm really interested to read his other works outside the realm of the Great Detective since I learned by perusal of his biography that he put much study and research in the crafting of these works.
Thank you pointing this out to my attention, Rachel. :)

But his historical fiction is indeed very good, and I think the level of... enthusiasm? Glee? that he had with it compared to his Holmes series is very different. Parang inspired, I guess? He also has some mediocre-ish works, usually the short stories, but I think they are still cute.
The White Company and Sir Nigel are connected to each other (chronologically, Sir Nigel goes first, but he wrote White Company first and I think it should be read first, too). Micah Clarke follows the events of the Monmouth Rebellion. Brigadier General is about an egotistic and completely hilarious French cavalry officer during the Napoleonic era. Here in the Ph, I think the most available in the stores is Brigadier Gerard. :c Never ko pang nakita yung iba.
I- I'm so sorry for the out of topic!

"Funny of you to mention that since I've seen a copy of Sir Nigel and The White Company in a branch of Booksale a few days ago. Are they really good reads? Convince me, I might buy and after I'm done with them, we might discuss the book/s.
@jzhunagev (your name is so hard to spell haha): Really? I should go and look for them... @KD: lmao no. He added me uuuh last week, napraning din ako. I went to the group because I wanted to offer it as a location for future... field trips? Or something.
:p You can ask Kristel who I am, we've met a bunch of times irl.
Hahaha, bad timing on when to be more vocal in the group. It occured to me na pwede akong mapagkamalang bot, pero meyo obvious naman na totoong tao ako.
loling. I was just ribbing her because she doesn't use her RL name in the circles that we frequent online and that's not what I call her in real life.
Re: multiple accounts, in the next week may magkakaroon ulit ng dalawang accounts. Yung isa mala-Hemingway yung diction and the other mala-Faulkner. Tapos may lalabas na French speaker. Si Proust naman yun.
@NYKen: I own a bunch of anthologies of Sherlock Holmes pastiches. Right now, what I have open at home is The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, but I have a few others waiting to be read... under my bed. Ahehe. I have my eye on a few others, but it's actually a bit difficult for me to read them because a lot of them fail to keep the Doyle style intact (which is crucial for me because the series is first person POV). Do you have any suggestions, though? I would love to check them out.
Ano address nyan? Papapasukin ba nila isang tao lang jan?
NYKen wrote: "Rachel and Jzhunagev, I see a Sherlock Holmes mini discussion. I just wanted to add, have either of you read any of the new Sherlock Holmes novels written by modern writers such as Dan Andriacco, and other current mystery authors. I mean, nobody will ever come close to writing him as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but there have been some good recent books written by other authors and their interpretation of the Baker Street Boys and Inspector Sherlock Holmes."Hi NYKen!
I'm still reading the Canon and so far I've made it to The Return of Sherlock Holmes and I'm having a grand time!
After this I might make my way through the numerous parodies and pastiches and hopefully hunt down some of the books you're recommending.
Nice of you to drop by here. :)
Strange.
@Rollie: Yeap.@H: Japan St., Better Living Subdivision, Paranaque City. I don't remember the correct number right now, but it's a relatively short street and there is a large poster of Booksale on it.
I think nagpapapasok sila. What I was planning was that, if people are interested, is to go there myself and negotiate on letting everyone in from morning to afternoon (without their requisite closing time during lunch).
I'm giving a shoutout for A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman. I though it was a wonderful fusion of both Holmesian and Lovecraftian elements. I briefly considered trying out Laurie R. King's Mary Russell series but I don't know how much I'd enjoy an original main character married to Holmes.

Hmm... I might give Gaiman a try after all. :)
Siyempre basag si you-know-who kaya nagtatalak siya last week.Laly: Welcome to the group! Pinilit ka ba ni Lynai na magjoin? :D
Christine: I assume tech writer ka din? :D
Oh no! And my sister decided to join this group when people are becoming paranoid already! Haha! But I assure you guys, Laly is a real person. She got dismayed when her FB was converted into Timeline so decided to finally open an account in Goodreads. Sabi nya,at least daw dito she will be finally motivated to read more.
@Kristel: I loved a Study in Emerald! It's also in Improbable, if I remember. I'm sorry, but Bandar Seri Begawan is not in the Philippines.
@jzhunagev It's a short story and I think it's available for free at Gaiman's website as a PDF. The only other Gaiman book I've finished is The Graveyard Book. I tried the American Gods audiobook a couple of years ago but I stopped listening in the middle of it.

Welcome to the group, Laly!
And that Jeffrey Deaver book on her currently reading folder easily gave her away. It's not a hand-me-down book from big sis, eh? Haha! :D [Teasing]
Haha. @Kristel: Remind me to bring you a few books on Sunday, hey? Pag nag meet yung TGF after May at sasama ka, isama mo ako!
Rachel wrote: "@NYKen: I own a bunch of anthologies of Sherlock Holmes pastiches. A Study in Sherlock. Although may BBC Sherlock story doon (sorta)...
Ang interesting sa Improbable are the stories with Doyle in it, because Doyle is such a character as an author (in many ways, the opposite of his most famous character).
jzhunagev wrote: "And that Jeffrey Deaver book on her currently reading folder easily gave her away. It's not a hand-me-down book from big sis, eh? Haha! :D [Teasing] "I actually borrowed that book from her but did not finish. She's re-reading it now haha!
Rachel, super tawa kaya ako nun! Nagcartwheel malamang iyon palabas ng bahay nila. So hayan, a proof na hindi siya alter-alter-alter ego: magpapakita siya with Kristel!

May bagong Sherlock story din si Neil Gaiman that deals with bees...
Kabog.
jzhunagev wrote: "Where can I buy The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and A Study in Sherlock here?"You can probably order them sa bookstores (I ordered The Improbable from Powerbooks a few years ago) while A Study in Sherlock I personally bought sa Kindle.
There are some free stories for the former at http://www.johnjosephadams.com/sherlo...
