[General] Introduce Yourself!
Hi everyone! I've been a member here for 2 years now although I haven't really checked-in to account. I was swayed by the other book-centric social network (sorry) but now I'm kinda feeling that Goodreads is the better choice. Anyhow, see you all around.
badmonkey hello! and welcome to GR Filipino Group! There will be a book discussion coming this January you might be interested :) Rodge hello and welcome to The Filipino Group! hope you can join us on our meetups :)
Happy New Year!
Thebadmonkey wrote: "Figured I'd see if any "real" readers might be interested before giving them to a charity. I'm in QC. Hope to meet some of you sometime! "Hullo there!
Well, I'm pretty interested with the books you'll be giving away.
And you're not a bad monkey at all! Not bad at all! :)
Hi guys :)I'm Sabina, 19. I like fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, YA, dystopian, adventure, and contemporary literature. Trying (and failing) to get into classical literature. Some of my favorite books from last year are The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and The Passage by Justin Cronin.
Happy New Year!
Hello Thebadmonkey/Daryl. We would love to hear your Russian tales.Hello Rodge. You've just made the right choice! ;)
Hello Sabina. Classics are intimidating, yes, but they rock!
Enjoy! Happy New Year!

Welcome Sabina! :)
Hi, I'm Bennard. A 20 year-old college student from the University of the Philippines. I'm a new member here although I have been reading ever since my childhood.I mostly like books that are post-modern or those that have magical realist elements. My most beloved book so far is 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez who is also my most beloved author. Other favorite authors of mine are Neil Gaiman, John le Carre, George RR Martin, and Ernest Hemingway.
I am not a fan of YA fiction though since something about it peeves me. To each his own, I guess.
I hope I will enjoy my time here in goodreads and to make friends here with fellow readers.
Welcome, Bennard. I like what your taste on books. Feeling ko magkakasundo tayo. Hope you can be active in this group.
Hi Bennard, two of our moderators are fans of your favorite authors (GGM and Hemingway). Welcome to the group and have fun! :D
Hello sa mga newbies!Bennard, too bad you're not into YA. You just need to learn which book to pick. a lot are rubbish, but a lot are also good.
i read GoT (i like) from GGRM and The Graveyard Book (i love), American Gods (i don't like) from NG and i am collecting Le Carre books.
enjoy it here!
He writes graphic novels, fantasy, pero maiinis sya if you try to categorize his work.
btw...cute lang si Neil Gaiman sa picts nya na mukhang photoshopped kasi in real life..matanda na sya!
Kung gusto mo ng Neil Gaiman...I'd start with Neverwhere.
Aba malay ko ba! It seems to me that YA readers read Gaiman. Oh well. Ubusin ko muna TBR pile ko before trying him.
hahahaha! Basta if ever you start reading Neil Gaiman, don't read American Gods.
It seems to me that YA readers read Gaiman. Oh well. Ubusin ko muna TBR pile ko before trying him."BUDDY! H is right: Neil Gaiman is NOT a YA writer. His most popular works are the graphic novels (Sandman series) and children's books. Some people would call his works weird, but for me, it's simply the fact that he has a rich and colorful imagination. And it's not true that YA readers read Gaiman. LOL. :))
Ayan! Ikaw talaga ang hinihintay kong magreact, knowing how big a fan of Gaiman you are. Tama ba? Baka assumero na naman ako, haha.At heto pa. YA ba ang Harry Potter series?
Monique wrote: "Some people would call his works weird, but for me, it's simply the fact that he has a rich and colorful imagination."Tama! Neil Gaiman has one of the best imaginations around...if you can say that about a writer..hehehe.
Yes, Harry Potter is a YA series.
Monique, YA reader ako pero i read Gaiman. I loved The Graveyard Book, ayoko lang tlg ng American Gods.Chami, start with the Graveyard Book, children's book yan. Don't start with American Gods!
MARIA: Oh, then that's good right? My reply to Angus was in the context of Gaiman being a YA writer, not that YA readers in general don't read him. Tsaka, not all YA readers who do read Gaiman appreciate him, so I'm happy that you do. ;)ANGUS: If you do decide to read Gaiman (chances of which are, I guess, one in a billion? LOL!), I completely agree with Maria - start with the children's books. I think that's Gaiman's forte, really. I'd recommend M is for Magic, a compendium of children's stories. ;)
I haven't read either American Gods or Anansi Boys yet, but I will this year. :)
Buddy: I think I will take your word. Mahilig naman ako sa short stories. Pero bakit 3.79 lang ang average rating niya? Yung Neverwhere ay 4.10
American Gods nga is filled with mythological characters, but you might be disappointed with the story as a whole...Neverwhere, I would recommend. Stardust simple lang, parang fairy tale...Graveyard Book and Coraline pareho maganda.
Angus, magbasa ka na lang ng graphic novels...I liked his "Murder Mysteries" and ang pinakagusto kong part ng Sandman was "Dream Hunters" (which isn't even actually part of the Sandman story)...pero maganda sya, especially the one with the Yoshitaka Amano illustrations.
Hoy, H. I really liked Neil Gaiman's American Gods. For me, that is an example of high fantasy.May YA flavor si Gaiman like Coraline and The Graveyard Book. In fact, para sa akin the former is even a children's book. Scary lang nga pero children's.
Harry Potter fans! (kasama ako dyan) Ang first 2-3 books ay children's. The rests are YA or even MG (middle grade).
K.D. wrote: "Hoy, H. I really liked Neil Gaiman's American Gods. For me, that is an example of high fantasy.May YA flavor si Gaiman like Coraline and The Graveyard Book. In fact, para sa akin the former is eve..."
Hahaha ok! Ako hindi hehe. Para kasing ang daming hype over it, but when I read it, I was disappointed.
Oo, style pang children's book yang Coraline and Graveyard Book...and it's about children. Pero, I don't know if I'd let my future children read it while they're still children hehehe.
Ang Harry Potter nga...book 1 and 2 mas Children's book nga...maybe up to 3. Then 4-7 YA na.
:)Hi Monique! I know u meant it in general. Yes, i appreciate Gaiman. ibang klase ang humor nya. :)
KD, another book we agree to disagree: American Gods. nyahaha
May YA din si Gaiman... yung M is for Magic na short story collection and Interworld. Yung iba nga lang niyang mga books not necessarily for YA; may for children, may for adults...
Flip: Thank you for siding with me. Angus: Wag na nga sabi. I know your taste.
Kasi all the members of this group own that list. They voted for the books and they elected the committee members. So, the committee members were the ones who finalized the list. May mga tagalog dyan like:
1) Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag ni Edgardo Reyes
2) Mga Ibong Mandaragit ni Amado Hernandez
3) Noli at Fili
4) Ibong Adarna
5) Dekada '70 by Lualhati Bautista
6) ABNKKBSNPLAko ni Bob Ong
7) MacArthur ni Bob Ong
May mga local books in English din like:
8) Tall Story by Cindy Gourlay
9) Naermyth by Karen Francisco
10) A Woman with Two Navels by Nick Joaquin
11) The Filipino League of Heroes (comics book)
Tama ba? Parang saulado ko na ang list. :)
Maria: Pang-thunders kasi ang American Gods. May 10th year hardbound very expensive edition pa kaya yan. Sabagay, maganda namang pakinggan yang "agree to disagree." Ranee (After the Quake tsaka Hardboiled). So, di ba malapit?
Kasi kami ni Veronica, same generation har har.
For those who are wishing to read Gaiman, I suggest you pick up his short story collections first. Yung Smoke and Mirrors at Fragile Things.
P.S.
For me 4-5 stars yung American Gods.
I'm saying this as a fan, not as a critic)...I like him, I think he has a great imagination, his ideas are brilliant...but personally, I don't think his writing style is great. For me, it's a bit rough around the edges, and leaves me wanting, most of the time. But, like I said, his imagination and brilliant ideas compensates for his lack of excellent writing abilities.
Yun lang :) (...runs and ducks for cover...hehehe)
KD: Buti nilista mo yung mga Filipino books from our list, I'll buy them. Except Bob Ong. Once is enough, hahaha.
That's a good way to "broaden your horizon" :D

Not sure where to post this, but I've got a stack of 50 or so books that I need to let go of. A mix of "Oprah's Book Club" titles, some mystery and thriller books, and an assortment of other genres.
Figured I'd see if any "real" readers might be interested before giving them to a charity. I'm in QC. Hope to meet some of you sometime!
