what do you think about the concept that losing nuanced vocabulary from our language will lead to loss of nuanced thought?

message 2: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yo, bro! What up?

in some circles we seem to be. it's the decline of western civilization. haven't you heard?

message 4: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Heard what, dude?

message 5: by Charissa, That's Ms. Obnoxious Twat to You. (new)

Charissa (dakinigrl) | 3620 comments Mod
heard of cows.

message 6: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Of course I've heard of cows!

I always enjoyed the nuances of the various and sundry ways they introduced multiple forms of the word "fuck" in the production of Deadwood.

message 7: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh wow. Yes.

message 8: by Rusty (new)

Rusty (RustyShackleford) I am the last person in the solar system to defend the manner of speech that has been adopted by teenagers (whippersnappers), texters, rappers, embracers of ignorance, Paris Hiltons and wannabes. But evolution in language is unavoidable, inexorable. New grammatical structures will be adopted, more words from foreign languages and pop culture will be enfolded into the language, meanings and pronunciation will change. You cannot stop this process. The French Academy has been trying for years to maintain the “purity” of the language, with no success.

Hell, I’m not that eloquent myself, but I can appreciate eloquence, and those who can always find the most choice word or phrase, communicate the most complicated idea, people who can communicate succinctly and more clearly on the written page the thought that my addled mind can hardly form. And there are many who feel the same. I don’t think that will ever change. But, as much as it pains me to say it, I’ve met people whose every word is an all out sexual assault on the English language, people whose speech makes my teeth grind, my fists ball up and my knuckles itch; who were nonetheless brilliant, capable of incredibly nuanced thought.

beautifully eloquent, Rusty.

Sherri... your entire being is nuanced. you can't help yourself. sledgehammer and all.

Larry, no a cow heard. Cocksucker.

Bunny... good point. You are a rose garden amongst daffodils.

message 10: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) How can we ever know exactly what a cow heard? Much less the nuances of what it heard.

And both weeds and roses have their own beauty, if we would just choose to see it.

by wiring it's thick little brain to a bunch of wires and performing experiments on it, of course.

message 12: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh.

message 13: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) Reminds me of 1984... didn't they have a 'Right-Speak' language or something that was an approved & truncated version of English?

message 14: by Charissa, That's Ms. Obnoxious Twat to You. (new)

Charissa (dakinigrl) | 3620 comments Mod
truncated:

garbage prose and crap we compose

message 17: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) LOL You're a natural Charissa! And now your verse is saved for all future (wo)mankind.

"newspeak"

Now that I have told you be sure not to go and commit a thought crime.

message 19: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) oops
Nope, no thought crimes here... uh, sir!

message 20: by Charissa, That's Ms. Obnoxious Twat to You. (new)

Charissa (dakinigrl) | 3620 comments Mod
right this second I'm thinking about committing a crime. too late.

Servius Heiner | 1980 comments Mod
That IS a thought crime against big brother, Charissa. If you are dead then who will rewrite our history every morning? Back to work, when you’re done I'll give you your daily ration of victory vodka and victory tobacco.

message 22: by Charissa, That's Ms. Obnoxious Twat to You. (new)

Charissa (dakinigrl) | 3620 comments Mod
can i have some victory opiates instead?

Servius Heiner | 1980 comments Mod
No.

We have them but since you asked for them we can not give them to you; vodka only.

Also you are asking too many questions lately, we require you to report to the ministry of love for an evaluation. See you there citizen.

message 24: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) I need to find my orange jumpsuit so I can do the approved calisthenics (sp?) in the morning in front of the giant monitor.

Servius Heiner | 1980 comments Mod
And please Sherrie, I was told yesterday that you missed two minutes of hate. Big brother requires you to participate in the daily calisthenics, and in the two minutes of hate every day.

message 26: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) ::pouts:: Yes, sir. But, I hate hate!

message 27: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) What a conundrum.

message 28: by Charissa, That's Ms. Obnoxious Twat to You. (new)

Charissa (dakinigrl) | 3620 comments Mod
Will the ministry of love give me opiates? I'm sure I'd find it easier to follow rules if I had a sufficient amount of opiates.

message 29: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Opiatic submission.

message 30: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) Oh, yes please! Although, Victory Oxycodone will do in a pinch.

message 31: by Charissa, That's Ms. Obnoxious Twat to You. (new)

Charissa (dakinigrl) | 3620 comments Mod
exactly.

Maybe Nick is an Eastasian spy.

Servius Heiner | 1980 comments Mod
Heh!

Servius Heiner | 1980 comments Mod
Oh and I thought it was victory vodka... was it gin? DOH!

message 42: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) Charissa - That ice cream looks luscious! And, I'm not an ice cream girl, but I think I could definitely make an exception.

Sherrie... highly recommended! it will cause a mouthgasm.

Sherri... "she don't have the talent and it makes her hiss
she loves a good rhyme, they cause her bliss
victory gin doesn't pour down her throat
she'd rather be free to rap a mink coat
out at the clubs she wears it and bares it
all the other girls say she's puttin on airs, quit!
Sherri don't pull punches, she'd rather be reading
she hides from the cops to avoid judicial proceedings
it's not that her life is a desperate sin
Big Brother's obsessed with his Victory Gin
Gotta get the juniper in.

message 48: by trivialchemy (new)

trivialchemy I don't know the answer to your question, Monica, but that's an interesting article.

Robinson describes the issue ably (though with a publisher's bias), but never really gets to the point I keep thinking he's going to make: that booksellers seem to have publishing houses by the balls, and if they want to survive this downturn, they'll have to revolutionize their business model; cut out the proverbial middle-man and reclaim their 55% profit margin.
