Fiona (bookcoop) Right - this topic will include two of my challenges.

1. A-Z challenge which is self explanatory. This will include any naughty books I might get from the library.

2. My to-be-read will be only books that I have read that come from my owned-to-be read pile. I want to get it down and not have so many unread books lying around.

1. Alphabet Challenge:

A - An Air That Kills - Andrew Taylor
B -
C - The Cement Garden - Ian McEwan
D -
E -
F -
G - The Game - Diana Wynne Jones
H -
I - I am Legend - Richard Matheson
J -
K -
L - The Loop - Nicholas Evans
M - The Mayor of Casterbridge
N - The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency - Alexander McCall Smith
O - One Day in September - Simon Reeve
P - Postmortem - Patricia Cornwell
Q -
R -
S - A Stain on the Silence - Andrew Taylor
T - The Thirty-Nine Steps - John Buchan
U -
V -
W - Watership Down - Richard Adams
X -
Y -
Z -

2. To Be Read Challenge

Currently: 284 books to be read.

I have read this year:

1. The Cement Garden - Ian McEwan
2. Watership Down - Richard Adams
3. An Air That Kills - Andrew Taylor
4. Conrad's Fate - Diana Wynne Jones
5. The Loop - Nicholas Evans.
6. One Day In September - Simon Reeve
7. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency - Alexander McCall Smith
8. The Game - Diana Wynne Jones
9. The 39 Steps - John Buchan

Allison (The Allure of Books) (inconceivably) soon to add: TFC and Shadow of the Wind.

Fiona (bookcoop) Oh no! I told a fib. :( Waiting For the End of the World was a library book. Oh poops.

Only 5. Woe.

Edit: I am mistaken! I forgot I read a on-fic as well. Horrah. 6 again.

message 6: by Jamie (last edited Feb 16, 2009 01:55PM) (new)

Jamie You've got a lot of great books on your list, Fiona - have fun with it! It must be difficult choosing what to read next, though. My favorites from your list were Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, but many of my TBR books are there, too.

Also, I noticed that there are a bunch of books listed more than once on the list - Sense and Sensibility, The Forsyte Saga, Jonathan Strange, Stardust... Maybe your list isn't quite as long as you thought?

message 7: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) Fiona! Your list is not in alphabetical order! ;)

message 8: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) I know! I shoulda maybe I will correct it later.

I think something went wrong when I was copying and pasting grrr!!!

message 9: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) Oh no... :(

Allison (The Allure of Books) (inconceivably) your list reminded me that I want to watch the BBC production of Gaskell's Wives and Daughters...I think I might start that tonight. Then I should probably go buy the books...

This is a really great list, everything on it either I have on my list too...or I've never heard of it, lol. I think I should let it stay that way :-)

message 11: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Haha, my list is amazing and shameful. I'm redoing it, alphabetising the authors. :(

You should read the books first... unfortunately I always seem to see the tv series ebfore the book - there are two of Gaskell's I have seen yet though.

Wives and Daughters - the book actually is unfinished, she died before completion but the tv series completes it how they believe she would have - I believe she left notes behind.

Allison (The Allure of Books) (inconceivably) Yeah, I read that! Very interesting. Did they finish the book that way too or does it just leave off?

message 13: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) Jamie's right, you have a lot of duplicates, Fiona!

I've read 21 of the books on your list, and own 11 that are to be read.

Also, what's up with #'s 132, 133, and 137?

message 14: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Deleted the offending lists... here are the new and improved:

message 15: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Unfortunately it has now grown to 279 after I realised I hadn't added World Without End by Ken Follett and so it just gets worse and worse and I never make one bit of improvement upon it.

I don't even have to acquire books for it to add up!

Allison (The Allure of Books) (inconceivably) how convenient! you can just start reading from the bottom up!

message 17: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) Wow... better get busy Fiona!

message 18: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Becky wrote: "Wow... better get busy Fiona!"

It's a scary list, I think it's put me off book-buying for life!

message 19: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) Fiona wrote: "It's a scary list, I think it's put me off book-buying for life!"

No it hasn't. You'll see something you want and you'll buy it, and hopefully not discover you've had it all along! ;)

message 20: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Lol, I've so nearly done that... fortunately I'm sad enough probably to remember what books I have and haven't got.

message 21: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Isn't there some large ticket item you would like to save for? Each time you narrowly escape disaster, by NOT BUYING a book, you could add that money to the kitty, and pretty soon...You'd have enough for what you want!

message 22: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) Oooh... that's a good idea! *yoink!*

message 23: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Kandice wrote: "Isn't there some large ticket item you would like to save for? Each time you narrowly escape disaster, by NOT BUYING a book, you could add that money to the kitty, and pretty soon...You'd have enou..."

You know, there's nothing in this world I really want - which I think is worth the money, other then books.

message 24: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Okay...Everytime you escape actually purchasing one, put that money in a jar. At the end of your book ban, buy yourself a Big Butt Gift Card for a book store and go to town!!!!

message 25: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) I think I'll just get desserts from Marks and Spencers... they do such a lovely lemon tart, and bread and butter pudding and just food in general.

Well, I have started IT by Stephen King and my tbr list is 278 but that's going to go up now because I've got a couple of more books I have found in my bedroom I haven't added to it yet.

message 26: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) There's no point in making more then one topic I suppose.

I'm going to copy someone else's challenge and do an A-Z one too. Including the ones I've already read.

Are you going to try A-Z Authors as well as A-Z Book Titles? I'm using some books for both lists so you don't necessarily have to read twice as many. And for authors, the group I'm doing it in said first or last name counts, although I'm trying to use all last names except for X.

Fiona (bookcoop) There. :( New list. Books gone UP instead of down.

Allison (The Allure of Books) (inconceivably) Gawd, I just scanned through that and it gave me a headache.

We have a lot of TBRs in common though...

message 32: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Giving YOU a headache. It's given me a migraine.

Allison (The Allure of Books) (inconceivably) I don't doubt it!

message 34: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) I could cry. becky only has 93... I have nearly 200 more then her.

I really need to take that ban a lot more seriously. No. More. Books.

Allison (The Allure of Books) (inconceivably) pick out some you don't want and get rid of them...there has to be something you don't actually want to own/read

Allison (The Allure of Books) (inconceivably) ...okay so probably not.

And it wouldn't do any good...what would you do? Just fill the spots back in.

LOL. I think the only thing that will fix our TBRs is to stay off GR.

...which, of course, isn't going to happen ;)

message 37: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Not until Hell freezes over and I win the lottery.

message 38: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) I want them all. I went through a sort and chuck bout a couple of months ago and that's the stuff left over.

message 39: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Compton-Mys (ColdSnap) | 101 comments The Tooth Fairy was good, but very odd.

message 40: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) Awww! Poor bird! If it's any consolation, I finally cracked... sort of. I had sent a book off to my GR friend Eric (also of TNBBC) and he is sending me back "Slaughterhouse 5" by Kurt Vonnegut. So technically I will have acquired a new book and will have broken my promise to myself... Kind of. I don't plan on reading it, or even opening it until my current list is done though.

But now you know that even I am not perfect! But I couldn't pass it up when its a return of a favor, and I couldn't ask him to keep it until 2010 either, lol.

But anyway... Are you finally all organized? No more books going to climb out from under the couch? Or from behind the stairs? Or out of the silverware drawer? It really helps to have everything staring you in the face and guilting you into reading what you have... :)

Good luck!

message 41: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Yeah, I think I have managed to dredge all the books out from their crevices and my bookshelf is looking rather top heavy.

message 42: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I think Becky has earned a Mulligan.

I would feel incredibly overwhelmed with that list staring me in the face. Good luck little Tweety!

message 43: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) Make sure you bolt it to the wall Fi, you don't want it to fall over if it really is top heavy!!

message 44: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I don't know if you are joking, but my bookshelves really are bolted to the wall. We had an earthquake and they all fell down once. I can't bolt the books in, but the cases will never fall again!

message 45: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) No I wasn't joking. Mine are bolted to the wall too, but only because my house is old and the floors are uneven. But I'd hate for someone to get hurt under a tipping bookcase, so I really mean it.

message 46: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (bookcoop) Lol, I think it's safe, well I hope. I dunno, maybe I should but I don't think I'll be able to cos of the wall and how it's made. It's a big sturdy looking bookcase. It does however stand at the foot of my bed bearing down directly over me.

If it was to fall... I'd be a pancake.

message 47: by Kandice (new)

Kandice And you're so small! Anchor it to the floor!

message 48: by Becky (new)

Becky (Beckyofthe19and9) Hmm... You might want to get your dad to test it by rocking it and see if it would be likely to fall over on you. Really.
