Leiko Xantara (Arrogant_Protector) Uh, I'm not sure where to post this...
Does anyone speak latin? I'm learning, but all I have is a dictonary, and I really need to know the sentence structure. In case you're wondering how this fits the group, I have this story, (or more like story plan) thats a lot latin. I mean even the title is in latin, and I'd really like to know how the sentences work so the characers could say some secret lines in latin.

message 2: by Sheva (new)

Sheva (ShevaDas) | 111 comments Yes, I'm a second year in Latin. I might be able to help you with some of the stuff.

message 3: by Leiko (new)

Leiko Xantara (Arrogant_Protector) Cool. Then can you tell me how the sentences would be put togethor?
Like if I said "Hi, how are you?" would it be said in the same order?

you are so lucky, Sheva. I take... *sigh*... spanish. I want to learn greek or italian, but νο σκοολσ νεαρ μψ ηουσε οφφερ θεμ. I'm getting better at the greek alphabet itself, though. I know all the letters by heart now, just not their names.

jeeves... | 37 comments ... what?... and i mean, it's a jumbly mess of like a bajillion languages, mashed into one, and having had all the order removed.

Amy (Runawaymarbles) | 329 comments Mod
ωε’ρε ταλκινγ σουπ.

I'm doing a report on the history of the alphabet... facinating stuff.

Amy (Runawaymarbles) | 329 comments Mod
No, seriously. It's really interesting. Just more proof that ωε’ρε ταλκινγ σουπ.

message 19: by Leiko (new)

Leiko Xantara (Arrogant_Protector) thanks guys. By the way, I've done research on the alphebet, and it is interesting.

Amy (Runawaymarbles) | 329 comments Mod
did you know it's named after alpha-beta?

message 21: by Leiko (new)

Leiko Xantara (Arrogant_Protector) yeah, isn't that cool?

message 22: by Amy, Writer Blocked in Chief (new)

Amy (Runawaymarbles) | 329 comments Mod

message 25: by Leiko (new)

Leiko Xantara (Arrogant_Protector) they're characters that represent a word, i'm pretty sure hierolglyphics are them

oh, those things.

message 27: by Sheva (new)

Sheva (ShevaDas) | 111 comments Yes, I take Hebrew and Latin. And Yiddish, but I think that it's a waste of time....

message 28: by Leiko (new)

Leiko Xantara (Arrogant_Protector) I want to take Latin in high school.

message 29: by Sheva (new)

Sheva (ShevaDas) | 111 comments Cool. :-)

Okay, you wanted to know about sentence structure?

message 30: by Leiko (new)

Leiko Xantara (Arrogant_Protector) Yeah. Like is it the same way written, in english as in Latin?

message 31: by Sheva (new)

Sheva (ShevaDas) | 111 comments No, it's different. Excuse me, I have to go look at my notes....

message 32: by Leiko (new)

Leiko Xantara (Arrogant_Protector) Ok!

message 33: by Sheva (new)

Sheva (ShevaDas) | 111 comments Okay, here you go:

-the verb usually comes at the end of the sentence
-there's no word for "the" or "a"
-subjects such as I, you, he/she, are generally not used except to put extra emphasis
Then there's the nominative and accusative, cases, genders, conjugations, and word endings....

Anyway, hope this helps.

O_o

You remind me of one of my friends, who finds time for 4H, swimming, tons of community service projects, memorizing a dozen different alphabets, and overachieving on EVERY ASSIGNMENT.

You guys are both heading for Harvard :-)

Sheva (ShevaDas) | 111 comments With the help of G-d. Full scholarship! :-) (I can always hope, right?)

yah.

message 37: by Amy, Writer Blocked in Chief (last edited Feb 14, 2009 07:48PM) (new)

Amy (Runawaymarbles) | 329 comments Mod
Why do you always write G-d? No one cares.

and if you don't get a scholarship, you could accuse them of anti-Semitism ; )

message 38: by Sheva (new)

Sheva (ShevaDas) | 111 comments I write G-d because...um...that's the way I've been told to write it, I guess.

Lol, that might work.

message 39: by Amy, Writer Blocked in Chief (new)

Amy (Runawaymarbles) | 329 comments Mod
Huh. Why were you told to write it G-d? Well, whatever. (Of course, I 'take the lord's name in vain' about fifty times a day. I tried saying 'dog ym ho!' in 5th grade, but I couldn't keep it up. I am still working on this.)

completly off topic, but I had a friend in 6th grade, who was Jewish, but when ever she was mad would say 'Jesus Christ'. It was pretty funny.

message 40: by Sheva (new)

Sheva (ShevaDas) | 111 comments Lol. I was told to write it G-d because of a rather long and boring answer involving something like destruction of the L-rd's name....I really can't remember.

message 41: by Amy, Writer Blocked in Chief (new)

Amy (Runawaymarbles) | 329 comments Mod
and L-rd too? Do you hate 'o's? well, none of my buisness anyway. We all know what you mean...

message 42: by Amy, Writer Blocked in Chief (new)

Amy (Runawaymarbles) | 329 comments Mod
...though if everyone knows what you mean, I don't get it. It's like writing f--k. Everyone knows it, so why not write it?

message 43: by Sheva (new)

Sheva (ShevaDas) | 111 comments Marisol wrote: "and L-rd too? Do you hate 'o's?"

Haha, yes! I hold a great grudge against the letter. :-)

I think it's because G-d's name is holy and shouldn't be used improperly or destroyed....in fact, prayer books and Bibles have to be buried rather than thrown out. Like flags. But I just realized I don't really know. Must ask my father about that....

I'm going to be at a private catholic school next year- I'm not even religious, but they are cutting $1billion from public schools cuz of the economy, and catholic schools are the cheapest private schools- so I'm really going to have to work on my language. I don't think they'd be too happy if I keep saying 'Jesus Christ' when I was mad, would they?

message 47: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (Caladhiel) *cough cough* I would hope so!

message 48: by Leiko (new)

Leiko Xantara (Arrogant_Protector) Only the teachers. Students are like everyone at other schools.
