Jennifer Rainey (jennifer_rainey) | 154 comments I know it's still a few weeks away, but I'm super excited for NaNoWriMo this November! Is anyone else doing it this year? If so, what are you writing? What are your favorite NaNo tips and tricks?

Perhaps we can even swap profile pages and friend each other; NaNo's always fun with friends. :) I'm at http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participa...

This year I'm writing a novel that's based on a short story I wrote in my collection Thoroughly Modern Monsters, and I can't wait to work with these characters again!

Eva King Hi! I'm joining nanowrimo as well! i will be working on a sooie stackhouse kind of book but instead of vamps with greek gods.
I think the best tip I've been given is to lsten to soundtracks of films that are the same genre as your book.

I do exactly the same thing! Music is really important to me when I'm writing, but especially during NaNo since you're on such a tight schedule. You have to be able to drop right into the mood of the novel. What kind of music do you think you'll be listening to this year?

I can see myself listening to a lot of Muse (although I'm not totally sold on the new album) and the new Rush album since my NaNo has a bit of a carnival theme.

message 6: by Steena (new)

Steena (steenaleen) I just heard about NaNoWriMo this month and signed up on the spot, I'm working on a piece of historical fiction based on Andrew Wyeth's "Christina's World" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christin...).

I definitely listen to music when I'm working but I hadn't thought about making the genre match. I'll have to make sure I've a playlist ready.

I love, love, LOVE mythology in literature!

G (gailbriggs) | 7 comments I'm doing nanowrimo this year as well. My novel will be an adult fantasy novel involving some wizardry. (nothing like Harry Potter in any way) I haven't thought it out properly yet, but hoping some inspiration will happen when the stress of having to write so much every day comes to me :)

I haven't really got the hang of the nano site yet, but I would appreciate some writing buddies on there: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participa...

message 12: by Janet (new)

Janet | 16 comments Another NaNoWriter here. My project this year is the second half of the novel I was writing last year. At November 30 I had over 52,000 words, but that was only about half of the story. In the interim, I finished, edited, rewrote, and polished NORMAL and got it published in eBook format. I can hardly wait for November 1 to get back to work on MESSAGES FROM UNCLE MYRL. I've been missing my characters. This book is a ghostly tale of a woman whose dream of rehabbing an old mansion and opening it as a writers' retreat becomes a nightmare from the moment she set foot on the property.

I love writing twisty ghost stories!

Please add me as a writing buddy. The more the merrier!

NaNoWriMo tips:
1. Read Chris Baty's NO PLOT, NO PROBLEM

2. Join your local group and attend some of the events FUN!

3 Block out writing time on your calendar as appointments you make with yourself that cannot be cancelled or rescheduled.

4. Music, yes. I put some weird stuff - Gregorian chants, creep classical music, Tom Waits, etc.

5. Create a ritual, preferably one that involves talismans and attire. Before I sit down to write, I turn on the music, fill my "Don't Quit Your Day Job" mug with coffee, put on my "magic idea" necklace and my "Author" baseball cap. Before I touch the keyboard, I rub my fingers over my talisman (which is an antique ink well) and then I go to work. It may sound silly, but always doing some routine before you work helps shift your brain into writing mode.

6. Set daily word count goals and give yourself a day off every now and then. It's okay to use writing deadlines as an excuse to postpone doing chores.

7. (MOST IMPORTANT!) Write with wild, reckless abandon for the sheer joy of it! This is FUN!

Jennifer, thanks for setting this up. I was thinking of the same thing a few weeks ago but hadn't gotten around to it. I set up the folder and then saw you made this thread. *sighs* So I just combined the two. :)

I have two books that I am editing and another that is only half written so I want to concentrate on what I have started. Even though I'm not participating, I'll be everyones cheerleader. My nanowritmo page is http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participa...
If think I've added everyone so far. New buddies would be great!

PS I was planning on sending out a group message soon. Maybe others will help us get geared-up.

Jennifer Rainey (jennifer_rainey) | 154 comments Just added everyone! And don't worry, BlackHippieChick, motivation is what we're all here for. :)

I just finished writing a rough outline of my project, but I need to think of something really, really horrible to happen to my MC in order to set the climax into motion! I feel bad torturing him so... kinda... not really, LOL!

message 34: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Blake | 17 comments 2k words a day for a month, once a year. Sadly, I got into writing books before it happened that year for me, or else I would have hit it hard.

message 35: by Janet (new)

Janet | 16 comments Keith,

NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. The challenge is to write a novel in 30 days. The writing starts on November 1 and you win the challenge if you write 50,000 words (or more) by November 30.

You can learn more at the website:
http://www.nanowrimo.org/

message 36: by Steve (new)

Steve Warren (steve_warren) | 10 comments I'm writing the sequel to my first novel as part of this. Pretty sure I added everyone that posted their profiles.

Good luck, everyone.

Kami BlackHippieChick Brown-Sparks (blackhippiechick) I'm really excited :-)!

Janet | 16 comments I'm excited, too. Can't wait to get back to my novel, which I left half finished.

message 39: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Rainey (jennifer_rainey) | 154 comments Eeeeeeek, guys, it's almost here! I am stoked. :P I added you back, too, Steve.

I unfortunately have a crazy day at work tomorrow, but I do get off at 4:00, so I'll still have a decent amount of writing time.

I'm doing it. I'm not doing paranormal or horror though. It's a contemporary new adult romance. It's called Pivotal Moments.

My profile is LOCATED HERE. My username is musesinspiration. Looking forward to seeing you guys there!

Heather (Clockwork_Wings) | 1 comments Haven't decided what I'm doing yet. I've got a couple ideas I haven't written, though. Short attention span.

message 47: by Chani (new)

Chani (TempestChani) | 11 comments I'm so excited for NaNo! Last year was my first year and I loved it! I'm planning on writing the second book in my teen paranormal series about witches this year. It's a book that's been sitting on the back burner for looooong time now, so I'm hoping NaNo puts me in the writing spirit! :)

message 48: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (geekymom13) | 3 comments This is my first year participating and I am uber excited! The best way to describe my idea would be paranormal/time travel. I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts on their subjects as well. :)

I'm participating this year too and can't wait! I really need a kick in the butt to get moving and hope this motivates me. I will be working on the 3rd book in a series so my characters are pretty much worked out although I have two new ones. This book is called Blood Trails and it's YA urban fantasy. I'd love to have some new buddies http://nanowrimo.org/participants/lis...
