M | 1656 comments The Skull

Amid the bleached bones of a hull
left rank with seaweed and storms’ scud,
she drank a dark wine from a skull,
under a moon swollen with blood.

From what had been a fine map case,
the flame glinting on rusting swords,
a twisted candle lit her face,
the pale wax dripping on mossed boards.

She studied me with ghostly eyes:
“Why have you come where only waves
from storms disturb the calm that lies
on this old wreck and the sea caves?”

I answered, but what homely words
escaped the narrows of my throat
pursued the lone way of sea birds
in lines some love-mad poet wrote.

“Would you” she warned, “taste ancient seas,
the moon, the soul’s eternal lull?”
I fell before her on my knees
and drank the strange wine in the skull.
