I just finished watching this movie. It is about a dad that is steeped in tradition. He lives with his son and daughter. His daughter is 24 and his friends start telling him he is being selfish and she needs to get married and have a life of her own. He goes home and tells his daughter that the time has come and he is going to find her a husband. The first try came too late as the eligible man is found to be engaged and not eligible at all. Poor daughter is heartbroken but dad finds her another immediately. Off she goes and he has to deal with loneliness and getting old. Aha, the empty nest syndrome.
Well done and understated. This is the last movie Ozu made.
