I recently watched (on YouTube in parts) Mansfield Park made in 1999 and was pleasently surprised.

I had heard it wasn't very good or true to Austen and I was myself surprised it was rated a 15 in the UK.

But, I thought the acting, edited storyline, scenery and everything was great!

There were to scenes which I think made it a 15, but otherwise it was great.

JLM was an AMAZING Bertram! and I thought Fanny was played brilliantly as well, if a little differently to the book.

All the other characters were well acted and I felt what they did and didn't include in the story was well chosen.

Now my favourite Mansfield Park!

Sabrina hhhmm, I may just have to give this one a try now. My library has it, but I have always been hesitant to watch it. Thanks for the post.

Nicole D. (TheReadingRebel) | 158 comments I don't plan to watch it still.I am more of a purest when it comes to Austen movies and hear this one goes to far off.But glad you liked it Soph.

I heard it went far off, But i don't think it did! I thought the 2007 went WAY WAY WAY offf!!! and i heard this was even worse but I thought this didn't, and I thought it was pretty accurate, the only thing is that Fanny was a bit more confident than in the book!

I really love Eddie the most! Frances O'Connor blows me away!! She's the perfect Fanny!!!

Sophie | 2621 comments Mod
JLM as Edmund well what can I say, perfect! And although a little more confident than in the novel, O 'Connor is the perfect Fanny!

message 10: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments Yes, indeed she is.

Sarah Smith (SarahLouiseSmith) Maybe we need to petition the BBC or some such for a modern, accurate version of MP! Lets think of a good looking Edmund too :)

I do agree! A long enough series to make it accurate and with good actors! (and good looking ;) )

Sarah Smith (SarahLouiseSmith) It was only £5 so no worries & we seem to like the same adaptations so I'm probably safe!

Noirfifre | 764 comments I am not sure about Mansfield Park 1999. Fanny essence is still not captured to me. She is so confident about herself that to me, it destroys who Fanny really is. I do not mind some well done added scenes etc but when you change the character of a heroine it changes the flow of the plot and the way the viewer relate to her and what she goes through.

Sir Thomas looks like a flirt in the movie. Well that is the impression I get from the movie.

Another thing, William is left out of the movie. No you cannot do that. I know, know I said that somewhere else (just saw this thread, my apologizes). You cannot leave out the heroine favourite person. The person she was most excited to see and talk about.

Aunt Norris lived up to her reputation

I do know what you mean about the character of Fanny. It was a bit different from the book but at times i think she did seem similar to the book - but i see your point. I thought it would be annoying as well when i started it, but i didn't mind it actually.
And i wish William was in it as well, but i liked how they made susan a bigger part.

I undertand why poeple might not like the film, i think i did because the 2007 is so awful. and I don't know... i just enjoyed the film a lot :)

message 23: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments Actually out of 1983, 1999 and 2007, I rather 1999. I just do not have a favourite. 1983 would be great, except it lacked life that the novel portrays. Edmund in this version was good and Lady Bertram was captured so well (she has a creepy voice, haha). I have no idea what was going on with Mr. Yates hair, lol, it distracted me.

2007.hmmmm. I have no idea why Fanny was always running around, giggling.

message 24: by Kim (new)

Kim | 15 comments 1983 for me - not that it is a great version but I truly hated 1999 and 2007. For me both Frances O'Conner and Billie Piper were awful Fannys, with the latter being the worst. Fanny does not need to be made vibrant and excitable - that misses the point. Hoping someone will make a good version soon.

message 25: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments I am hoping so as well, Kim.

I am hoping so as well!!

I agree with you about the 1983. It was good but because of the life lackingness (;)) sometimes, it did drag a little sometimes!!
2007 is awful - did they realise what book they were adapting?! She never even left Mansfield Park - not once!!

message 27: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments "She never even left Mansfield Park - not once!!"

Thank you! Screen writer was in a bad season.

Nicole D. (TheReadingRebel) | 158 comments I LOVE the 1983 version.I know it's dated but by far it's the best version.I haven't seen the 1999 version but after hearing that Fanny and Mary kiss(is that true?)and Fanny is even more outgoing in this one I don't know if I'm going to watch it.

message 30: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2621 comments Mod
It is very true to the novel :)
I have seen it and Fanny is more outgoing but aspects of her character are still there so I don't mind. I do not remember them kissing... No... I really cannot remember that (and I think I would have!)

message 31: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments huh? I do not remember that scene. What I do remember is the kiss Mary and Henry shared in 1999 was eyebrow raising to me (for a brother and sister)

message 32: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2621 comments Mod
Mary and Henry.... Don't remember that one either! I remember Fanny and Henry. Henry and Maria... (And Fanny and Edmund of course ;))

message 33: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments Opps I think it was in 2007 version. I will search for it for you a it later.

Noirfifre | 764 comments Interesting article:

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&am...

Nicole, since you have not seen the movie, I will try to explain the scene you may be referring to delicately (for the sake of spoilers etc). Remember when Fanny gets wet in the rain when she was close to the Grants cottage and Mary urges her to stay on. Well that scene in Mansfield is viewed by some as improper in nature. They did not kiss in that scene though. There is also the scene where Fanny and Mary are rehearsing scenes for the play. Some folks raised their eyebrows to this one (I did).

message 36: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2621 comments Mod
Oh of course! That has jogged my memory! No they do not kiss! But I guess the scenes are a little risky... As are a few others - but that's the problem of trying to appeal to a wider and more modern audience.

message 37: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2621 comments Mod
That is an interesting article! And I am glad someone is defending it - I enjoyed it even with the differences (then again, I can see why people don't like it....)

message 38: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments The 1999 version is more sexual in nature, however it is PG 13, so persons 13 years and older can watch it. I suppose by 13 parents should have had the talk and discuss certain morals that the family believe in. (This was not meant to deter from watching it Nicole :()

message 39: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments After hours of searching Soph, I did get the kiss between Mary and Henry. It is in the 1983 version. The 1st part of the 5th episode. Sorry for the mix up.

message 40: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2621 comments Mod
It is worth watching, isn't it Marren? :)

Oh yeah! They kiss, brother and sisterly, but it's rather close to the lips! Thanks for researching!

message 41: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments It is worth watching. After reading about the screen writer's aim for the film, I realize that is "loosely based" on Mansfield Park. She wanted to reconstruct Fanny, make her what she wanted her to be.

message 42: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2621 comments Mod
Which is suppose is fair enough, and honestly, for me, it was more based on MP than the 2007 one seemed to be....

message 43: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments Yes, the 1999 version was more in tuned to the book. ALthough, Fanny in 2007 behaved more in the awkward silence of Fanny from the book. Well except when she was not running. One part of the 1999 version which touched me was Fanny departure from Mansfield to Portsmouth: when she started crying and Edward was on the brink of tears.

message 44: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2621 comments Mod
It was so sad when she was leaving! And so sweet that Edmund was nearly crying! That was well done indeed i thought - although she was happy to see her family, all the nerves and apprehension of not seeing them for so many years!
I am glad they included and made it more like the book. She never left Mp once in the 07 - which is completely wrong!!

message 45: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments hehe, that really does tick you off. It bothers me but I have seen worse adaptations, hehe

message 46: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2621 comments Mod
Haha! It does! It's important for her to leave and see where she came from!
Which ones are worse?!
