* It might be a good idea to plan out all your story posts in advance, but it is up to you!

* The status update limits you to 140 characters per post. Instead of seeing this as a hindrance, how can it help define the story?

* Don't forget about time of day. A post at midnight can have different meaning than a post at noon.

* The medium is your Goodreads status updates, so you can tell a story about yourself, but stories do not have to be told in the first person. Feel free to tell either a fictional or nonfictional story, introduce multiple characters, plotlines, etc.

* Feel free to include both general status updates and page number updates in your story. (Maybe one of your characters is reading a book?)

* Here's a fun example of Pride and Prejudice told through a Facebook feed:

Post your thoughts on using status updates for creative storytelling! We're curious!

Andrea I wasn't sure where else to post this....I forgot to post the "START STORY" line before my first post. It's the second one. I hope this is ok....

Mary (MyGoodness) | 5 comments My first post for the current writing contest. I hope this is the right place to begin.

Adrift at sea am I, foam flinging about in haphazard patterns, guised as choices vying for my attention. Beyond my immediate perimeter, all is awhirl while I sit, numb, in the hub as the wave tossed sea churns, pressing for a course.

I'm NO authroity on this contest, as I've struggled with it myself, but:
Andrea, I think they won't "find" your story unless you redo it with the "Start Story" line in the status update. Hate to see your story missed, so I share this advise.
Mary: My understanding is that this is NOT the place to begin-I believe you must begin with that First post in your status update as with the rest of the story.
This contest is a real challenge for everyone. Hopefully, any in the future will be made more clear.

Annette: Thanks. Where do I find the First Post in my status update...?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this a bit confusing. Thanks!

Andrea Thanks for the help, Annette.

First, at "home," you have to click "groups" and join the Contest group.

Then, go to http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

and note the time and date of your first post. DO NOT post your story there!

Then, go to "home" and "currently reading" and click "status update". Here, you must write at the beginning of your first post:
"START STORY: read my submission for the Goodreads Status Update Writing Contest"

AND the last post here must start by noting this:
"STOP STORY: final post of my story for the Goodreads Status Update Writing Contest"

I sure hope this helps. I've had fun, but it was a long road to get there!

GOODREADS MODERATOR: It may be a good idea to change your directions for entering this contest so it is clear for the writers, please.

Please read the contest rules:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

If there is something specific that is unclear please let me know. If you are unfamiliar with status updates, there are step-by-step instructions here:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Again, let me know if there is a specific step that is unclear.

Thanks so much Annette. I'm going to try that right now. Mary
