I went online and was recommended http://www.citibank.co.uk/personal/ba...

Apparently you can apply online and when I phoned they were very helpful. It seems like you can either open a dollars acount and a UK account and just shuffle between the two or you can pay a $ into the UK one and they charge you £5 for doing it.

There is a fee for the account but it isnt that much and is cheaper than a cheque cashing fee. Depending on the services you want then you can reduce that.
