Man crafts a home on the moon [s]

Not sure about very many details, but here goes:

I read the book(s) in the late 90's, not sure when they were written. A boy becomes some sort of magician or something, controlling different colored lines of power. Eventually builds a fortress/getaway on the moon. Has a gold staff or something that turns black as he uses more power. I believe the main male characters name started with a B. Please help :)
