message 18: by Helena (new)

Helena Fairfax (helenafairfax) | 29 comments This was one of my all-time favourite books as a child! I live in Yorkshire, and find the descriptions of the wildlife and seasons are perfect. If you like this book, you might also like A Little Princess, by the same author. I've always loved both of them.

message 19: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments I hope to read A Little Princess too sometime soon ☺

message 20: by Trish (new)

Trish Albright (trishalbright) | 1 comments I still have my red velvet hardcover version of The Secret Garden. It came with a heart locket! It's in my daughters' room now. I was hoping they would discover it on their own, but I think I might have to work it into bedtime reading.

While I've never read the book for A Little Princess, I've always loved the original B&W movie with Shirley Temple. I've never seen the remake, on principle.

Wow, I've never even heard of this film, let alone seen it. I'm intrigued! Am definitely going to check this out.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments Seen both versions and loved them!!!!! Shirley Temple has a special place in my heart for her movies but the newer one with Liesel Matthews is good too.

Heather L (wordtrix) | 1193 comments Helena: It's an old family favorite. Apparently, there have been more versions of this than I was aware. Here's a link to the 1939 movie info at imdb:

The Little Princess

Thanks, Heather! I'm looking forward to watching it.

Nomad *happy sigh*

This was one of my very favorite books as a child. I've read it so often over the years. I saved a really nice copy with gorgeous illustrations that I recieved for a birthday as a child and now it's in my daughter's bookcase.

It's heartwarming to see it there, knowing I'm passing down something I loved so much to her. And my son when he's older, if he likes it. I'm not into the gendering of my kids books. They can read what they want, as long as they enjoy it.

message 27: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments I wish I could get my daughter to read. I think she would love this!

message 28: by Nomad (new)

Nomad My wife and I read to our children all the time. Storytime is a very important part of family life to us. Hopefully this will result in two children who love to read. I try to read them a varitey of genres.

Exposing them to as many types of books as I can I think is a good goal.

message 29: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments I've tried. We've read to her and try to get her to read to us and there are books all over the place but nothing really has grabbed her interest. She'll get excited about a book and read maybe a few pages and thats it. She does claim that she read the whole Kate O'Hearn's book Pegasus and the Flame of Olympus And wants me to buy more of the series.

Melissa My daughter loves to read and we read together everynight even though she is old enough to read to herself now. My son likes to read certain things and just those certain books, he can't randomly pick up a book and get into it, but the ones he likes he will read over and over.

I've always been a reader and started reading to them when I was pregnant with them. Dr Seus has a book for baby Oh, the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss that I read to them.

Melissa On the subject of The Secret Garden, I was pleasantly suprised about how much I really enjoyed this book.

message 32: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments I'm really liking it so far. The movies seem to follow it pretty good but there are a few things a little different.

message 33: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments Finished ☺

I'll start with a couple of questions. But read are your own pace. And please feel free to ask your own questions.

1. Did you find The Secret Garden to be an easy book to read? Or difficult?

2. What is you opinions on the cast of characters? Were there too many or not enough?

3. If you have seen any of the movies, how would you compare them with the book? Favorably or not?

4. Would you read more by this author?

Melissa 1. Did you find The Secret Garden to be an easy book to read? Or difficult?

Once I got past the first chapter I found it an easy book to read and even looked forward to getting back to it. I originally took it to work to read on breaks and had to bring it home because I was extending my breaks to keep reading. I was suprised by how easy it was for me to read because I usually have a hard time getting into any of the classics because of the writing style used back then, but this one actually flowed nicely. Even when they talked in the dialect it didn't throw me off, which has happened in other books.

2. What is you opinions on the cast of characters? Were there too many or not enough?

I liked the characters, I didn't have a problem keeping them straight so that was a good thing!

3. If you have seen any of the movies, how would you compare them with the book? Favorably or not?

I have not seen the movie, I checked at the library but it is listed as lost and it has to be lost so long before they order a new one. I would like to watch it though.

4. Would you read more by this author? I would read another book by this author, I liked her writing style and thought she wrote a nice story.

message 35: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments Melissa, I found it easy to read, too. I guess it being considered a "children's" book makes it easier. lol. I listened to part of it on librivox and heard how the reader pronounced some of the dialect so it made it easy for me to get through that part.

I enjoyed the cast of characters. One disappointment for me, concerning the movie versions, I don't remember any of them showing Mrs. Sowerby (Martha and Dickon's mom). Though she only had a small appearance in the book. I definitely recommend the movies. I liked both of the ones I saw but I think the 1994 version is more popular.

I have intentions on reading more also. I think probably A Little Princess will be my next one.

Melissa A Little Princess is the one that caught my eye as well.

message 37: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments Let me know if you are interested in a buddy read for A Little Princess and if so when would be a good time? I'm pretty flexible.

Melissa Let me check that my library has this book or that I can get my hands on it someway and then I'd love to do a buddy read. I've probably stretched my book budget as much as it's going to stretch right now. ;)

message 39: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments ok ☺ If you have an ereader you can get it free at several sites, including, Project Gutenberg and, I think, Amazon.

Melissa Oh cool! I'll have to download it on my daughter's kindle.

message 41: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments If you look you can find so many "classics" free.

Melissa I just got this downloaded to my daughter's kindle. It will be the end of the month before I get what I'm reading now done though.
