DayDreamer (dayd) | 3 comments “All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little..."

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET, Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME... SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point"

MY POINT EXACTLY.”

Death is a very favorite character of mine. Maybe my most favorite in the Discworld. And this is one of the quotes I remember him most with.

My favourite Death quote (Death of Rats that is).

Lisa (lisadannatt) | 52 comments I love that Death keeps the Grim Squeaker around 'because everyone needs a part of themselves that can dance naked in the rain.*'
* quite an over-rated activity.

Vickie | 1 comments From Mort:

THANK YOU, BOY said the skull. WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

'Uh' said Mort 'Mortimer...sir. They call me Mort.'

WHAT A COINCIDENCE said the skull

I quote that line way too much to my friends

Vicki Edwards | 1 comments My favourite quote by Death is

'Human beings make life so interesting. Do you know, that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to invent boredom.'

I love the way Death constantly tries to grasp the concepts of humanity but often fails - I mean trying to stick a robin to a card and his comment about the robin not getting into the Hogswatch spirit. He's unbelievably well written. Having just finished the Colour of Magic I really can't let Rincewind pass us by either and their never ending frustration and fear with the other is so amusing. My two favourite characters.

EstherCW | 10 comments “You can’t give her that!” she screamed. “It’s not safe!”
IT’S A SWORD, said the Hogfather. THEY’RE NOT MEANT TO BE SAFE.
“She’s a child!” shouted Crumley.
IT’S EDUCATIONAL.
“What if she cuts herself?”
THAT WILL BE AN IMPORTANT LESSON.
-Hogfather

Rock (rockpapercovid) My first discworld book was Mort. I fell in love when DEATH was being introduced so ominously then the first thing he does is slip on some ice and says OH BUGGER. I died laughing and loved DEATH ever since.

Naomi (naomileigh25) | 3 comments DEATH is one of my favourites in the discworld books! I just find him so funny!

Wastrel | 21 comments Just read one in Jingo:

"I can maintain an up-to-the-minute contacts directory..."
"REALLY? I HAVE A GREAT MANY CONTACTS."
"There you are, then," said the demon... "So I make a note of them, and when you want to contact them again --"
"THAT IS GENERALLY NOT NECESSARY. MOSTLY, THEY STAY CONTACTED."

Procrastitorian | 2 comments Favorite Death quote of all time comes from Mort:

Death was standing behind a lectern, pouring over a map. He looked at Mort as if he wasn't entirely there.
YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF THE BAY OF MANTE, HAVE YOU? he said.
"No, Sir," said Mort.
FAMOUS SHIPWRECK THERE.
"Was there?"
THERE WILL BE, said Death, IF I CAN FIND THE DAMN PLACE.

message 13: by Wastrel (new)

Wastrel | 21 comments Isplore the Red: 'And what would humans be without love?'
Death: RARE.

Later in the same conversation:
'Children are our hope for the future'
THERE IS NO HOPE FOR OUR FUTURE.
'What does it contain, then?'
ME.
'Beside you, I mean!'
Death gave him a puzzled look. I'M SORRY?
The storm reached its howling peak overhead. A seagull went past backwards.
‘I meant,’ said Ipslore, bitterly, ‘what is there in this world that makes living worthwhile?’
Death thought about it.
CATS, he said eventually, CATS ARE NICE.
‘Curse you!’
MANY HAVE.

Death was a bit more of a dick back then...
