Which adaptations do you think really did not do the novels justice?

message 2: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) I don't know if it's a disgrace as such and I do like it but the film of P&P with Keira Knightley has so many differences to the book... If I watch it right after reading I don't enjoy it!

What I do think was a disgrace was the zombie version!

message 3: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments Excuse me!!!!! I love Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley! the music is gorgeous!!! the actors are well-chosen and played...enough said for now.

Zombies and Jane Austen should never be mixed.

Mansfield Park with Billie Piper!!!!!! UGH!!!!!

message 4: by Irene (new)

Irene | 271 comments I agree, that version of Mansfield Park is not the best I've ever seen.

For what concerns P&P with Keira Knightley I think the problem is it's too short to do justice to the complexity of the story. They have to tell so many things in just two hours that the result is not so good.

message 5: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments Billie Piper ruined Fanny Price's character so much!!!

message 6: by Irene (new)

Irene | 271 comments The 1999 version with Frances O'Connor as Fanny Price is better. The cast is better but the script is not so satisfying.

message 7: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments I am totally watching that one!! It has the dreamy and romantic Jonny Lee Miller.

message 8: by Irene (new)

Irene | 271 comments I think Jonny Lee Miller is really good as Edmund Bertram, but he's not so good as Mr. Knightley. The BBC series with Romola Garai is the Emma adaptation I like less.

I like the Pride and Prejudice. I don't think it messes the story around as much as ... MP 07. That shouldn't really be called MP!!

message 10: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
I thought that Emma was good. Romala was a great Emma! I think my favourite Knightley is Northam. But I liked JLM! Glad that Emma was very faithful.

message 11: by Irene (new)

Irene | 271 comments I completely forgot about this kind of movies!!! Maybe it's due to the fact that I have an hard time in relating them to anything about Jane Austen...

I was orrified when I watched "Clueless"... that is supposed to be an Emma screen adaptation? Really?

message 12: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments Me too!! Bride and Prejudice. Honestly?

message 13: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
couldn't agree more!
well except Briget Jones as that wasn't meant to be based on it, just have links, which it does.
other wise, yes, clueless!! Bride and Prejudice! come on! awful!

message 14: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments It's a terrible disgrace! True, Letters to Juliet has somewhat plot like Pride and Prejudice but they don't overdo it and I was the one who noticed.

message 15: by Anne (new)

Anne (cinderella16) | 115 comments I think the new Persuasion was really bad. No offense Soph, I know you love that Wentworth, I just couldn't get past the girl! The Keira Knightly version of P&P is not very good either. I've only seen the new Mansfield Park. I didn't think it was bad, but then, I haven't seen any others or read the book!

message 16: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Each to your own about Persuasion. Anne wasn't well cast, I grant you!!

And KK P&P again fair enough.

As for MP, with regards to the novel, bad. It lost the plot mostly, and the spirit and meaning of the book I felt. (whereas I don't think the spirit and meaning were lost in the other two just mentioned.) if you read the novel (which you should ;) ) you would see!!

message 17: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments In all the movies that I have seen based on Jane Austen books my least favourite is Lost in Austen (or something like that). My second least favourite is BBC Version of Pride and Prejudice.

message 18: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Lost in Austen - agreed!!

BBC P&P? Wow. Why don't you like it?
Do you like the 05 then?

message 19: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Yes,the BBC Series relates more to the book but it just does not click with me. It is stiff. I re-watched it last week to see if my opinion would change but alas it did not. I wanted to smack some of the actors to often. I must say the Mr. Collins did a fantastic job in his portrayal. The 05 version is my favourite movie, there is also an older version that I liked. I cannot remember the year now.

message 20: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Fair enough. Haha Mr Collins....
I have seen 2 older versions and enjoyed them.
1980 (David Rintoul) or 1940 (Laurence Olivier)?

message 21: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments I don't remember the actors name. I will have to look it up.

message 22: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
If you don't mind. Would be interested to discuss it! :)

message 23: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments I have seen both versions that you mentioned. I rather the 1979/1980. I would not mind discuss it. Look what I stumbled upon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVLRN0...

So you've seen 4 adaptations like me!! :)
I will check out that link now...

Lost in Austen was horriable.I couldn't make it throw the whole thing.

message 27: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments No problem Soph. Same experience for me Nicole, I manage to watch quite a bit and could not bare it. In my opinion what makes a movie soothing based on these classics is great acting. Yes, yes you need to address the book but reciting line by line and killing the characters kills my nerve.

message 28: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Same!! And it went to far (I thought) especially with Darcy going to 21st Century - no! And also, he became accustomed to it far too quickly, he didn't seem shocked enough.
Well it all went too far really!!

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) The worst thing about Lost In Austen was that Darcy and Elizabeth are not together at the end. How could that be?!

message 30: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
I KNOW!! But then Lizzie isn't really apart of it. Which is again crazy!!

message 31: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) It could have been so much better!
Have you read 'Me and Mr Darcy'? That's also a bit odd, didn't like it much.

message 32: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
No
Continuations don't appeal to me
(whereas the diary series by Amanda Grange, I loved!!)

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) I need to read more of Amanda Grange's diaries - I loved Mr Darcys.

message 34: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Yes! They are great!!
Brandon's is my favourite! You see a whole other side to him! He moved up my 'hero list' as a result of the diary!
Wentworths is also great! Seeing the courtship of Anne and the eight years before the novel is great!
Well, they are all great and I recommend ALL of them!! ;D

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I thought that the Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice was horrid and didn't do the characters or the story any bit of justification at all. I thought that the Colin Firth version surpassed it by an enormous amount.

message 36: by Anne (new)

Anne (cinderella16) | 115 comments Agreed.

message 37: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Haha ;) no messing with you! ;)
Each to your own opinion ;) but I didn't think it was all that bad!
But, comparing it to the novel and yes, Series was better (because it was a series and so much longer!)

message 38: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) They just changed too much for me in the movie version... you can make it shorter without changing it so much.

message 39: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
They definitely did with the 2007 MP!!

message 40: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
HAHA
They were awful... Both...

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, my mom actually READ Pride and Prejudice with Zombies or whatever. I mean, how do you mix P&P with zombies? I plan on never reading it and even though it isn't a movie (as far as I know it isn't- *shudder if it is one*) it is a disgrace to the name of Austen.

message 42: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 4 comments Anna wrote: "Billie Piper ruined Fanny Price's character so much!!!"

Ugh, yes! I stupidly watched this version before reading the book and found Fanny so childish and annoying in the film. Couldn't warm up to her character once I picked up the book and found Mansfield's Park a really draining read. Hoping this'll change with a reread!

An adaptation I didn't really warm up to was the '07 Northanger Abbey film. There was something about it that was so off - it felt a lot less innocent than the the book, I think? Not really sure how to explain it, but it didn't feel right.

I've completely avoided all adaptations of Persuasion for fear of it ruining my love for the book. Please tell me I'm wrong - I'd love to watch a film version!

message 43: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Avoiding that book as well!!

I liked 07 NA but I do know what you mean.

As for persuasion, I love the 2007 and 1995.
I would say 95 is more accurate so i would recommend that one more!!

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) I agree, 95 is more accurate although I prefer the Wentworth in the 07 :)

Rebecca May | 561 comments Anna wrote: "Excuse me!!!!! I love Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley! the music is gorgeous!!! the actors are well-chosen and played...enough said for now.

Oh, I agree fervently! I love it, despite it's differences (which are inevitable) and the music is, as you say, unbelievably beautiful and gorgeous! Actors were great too. :)

Don't even get me started on zombies; mixing zombies, sea monsters or any similar disgusting things with the genius, beautiful works of Jane Austen should be forbidden by law :D and in my opinion is an insult to those who call themselves respectable in the Jane Austen fan community.

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) I agree Becca... I was shocked to see it for sale in the Jane Austen centre in Bath. You'd think they'd refuse to sell it (or I would, if I worked there!)

message 48: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
I would refuse!!

Rebecca May | 561 comments Sarah Louise wrote: "I agree Becca... I was shocked to see it for sale in the Jane Austen centre in Bath. You'd think they'd refuse to sell it (or I would, if I worked there!)"

Glad you agree. :) They really have it on sale in the Jane Austen center? That's awful! I certainly would refuse to sell it if I was there - but at least now I am forewarned if I ever go there, so thanks. :)

message 50: by Louise Sparrow (new)

Louise Sparrow (louisex) | 262 comments The 1999 version of Mansfield Park is at the top of my list of disgraces, closely followed by the Keira Knightly version of P&P.

... and I know this might not make me very popular but I hate the soggy scene in the 95 P&P. It just renders it ridiculous to me.

I'm not sure the Zombie one can even count can it? The book is a horrible hack though and is definitely a disgrace.
