Goodreads group Fiction Fanatics always has several challenges based on different themes. Check them out. Some involve just a few books and some require reading as many as 50 books.
I am in the Goodreads group South African Book Lovers and we do loads of challenges!
I do a personal reading challenge each year; trying to read one more book than I did the previous year. Been stuck on 38 for a few years and probably will be again next year! I am doing the challenges for this group as well, but I don't want to get too locked into reading certain types of books all the time. I also have a personal challenge of reading Presidential bios in order which I began after visiting the Calvin Coolidge presidential site and realizing I knew (or remembered!) very little about the presidents and wanting to learn more. I am through Garfield at this point and read one every 5th book.
This is my first year on Good Reads and I immediately loved the idea of the Books in a Year Challenge. I have never counted before, so I randomly chose 150. I had read 100 by the end of June, so it got raised to 200. I read LOTS and quickly.

I am doing the GR 2012 Reading Challenge and I also joined a group called Around the World in 80 Books. For that one, I am trying to read at least one book set in each of the 50 states of the U.S. (plus D.C.) and one book set in or about each country in the world. Both of these challenges will be ongoing for me since I often repeat countries or states with the books I want to read. Tammy, I love the presidential bio idea! I might have to borrow it!
2nd year in the Goodreads Reading challenge for me - I read 125 books last year (was unemployed for 6 months) & now I'm back in work full time I set myself a slightly more modest target of 100. It has however had me drifting off topic for the majority of this months reading as I've been trying to even up my totals of non - fiction to fiction read but I hope to come back into the fold in the next few days . . .
Years ago, I tried to figure out how long it'd take me to read 100 books. I was finishing up my undergrad at the time & I think I took about a year to get through 100. Though I'll admit that a large number of those books were read during the post-grad "what do you mean I'm not really qualified for a job?" unemployment binge, ha ha. Anyhow, part of the reason I joined Goodreads was because I wanted to see if I could still read 100/year. I joined in July & have only read 14 ... have a feeling that the 100/yr is a thing of the past.
I haven't figured out the challenges yet but I just joined a group yesterday to figure it out. It's called Second Chance Challenges.
im in the 50 books in a year challenge with Tiffani. I dont know if i will make it 50 but i decided to go from May 2012 to May 2013, and im already at 13.5 so I might make it.
I've just spent about an hour setting up a challenge for myself based on the GR shelf system. If anyone's interested, you can check it out here. :)

I might have to join you. It's helpful because most of the top books on the lists are already on my to-read shelf, so this will help me chip away at that.
(I also refuse to read Fifty Shades.)
I wonder if we can have a 'pick it up for me' challenge for October?

I did that in another group, that I'm no longer a part of, earlier this year. I loved it. People were paired up or paired themselves up and chose a book from the other's shelf. Usually, it was off a shelf of books they owned to make it a little easier. I didn't like the book that was picked for me but finally got it read and made a good book buddy in the process :)
Re 17 & 18: I think I've seen something similar to that in another group; we could certainly set up a thread for that if you all are interested!If you want to start the thread, Lamilla (or anyone else, for that matter), go ahead; if not, I'll get to it when I have a chance later today. :)
I wonder what form of the challenge would suit our group best. You might to tie it up with the current month's theme perhaps? I'd like if people will come up with something new/unusual for their partner, though it might be a bit risky.

I think that would be a great idea. If the book was not available currently at that persons library perhaps they could let their buddy know and a different book could be chosen.
Alright, everyone, I've put up a Notice thread for this idea here. For all those interested, I'd love to hear your ideas and feedback over there so we can get some rough-draft rules set up by October. :)
I started doing the 50 Book Pledge through The Savvy Reader before I found Goodreads (though I transferred my list to Goodreads as well) and I'm loving it. I read everything from pocket novels to huge non-fiction tomes, so it's fun to look back at the bizarre variety of people, places, times, and themes that I've immersed myself in over the course of a year. I'm currently at 45/50 and have slowed down to finish off a couple of more statistically-laden historical non-fiction books.
I'm getting very close to the end of my 100 Book challenge here on Goodreads. . . The general plan being once completed I will move onto to reading some of the 1,000 page plus beasts I have lurking in the stacks as well as trying to even out my ratio pf non-fiction to fiction.
@Clair-Jane, good for you!!! What are some of those monster books? Just curious.
Bleak House, Infinite Jest, & Drood spring to mind but there are a fair few other behemoths lurking up there waiting to have the spines cracked.
I would be closer to done, if I could load my ARC electronic books I've read. I'll have to read and EXTRA 10 books.
I love the top shelves idea Amara posted earlier. I am currently trying to make my way through all the books mentioned on Gilmore Girls (just the books, not including the movies that were mentioned that are based on books). With 300+ books mentioned on the show, it will take me quite awhile to get through the list!

My 100 book challenge here on Goodreads is complete . . . Now to try & beat last years total !
If anyone's looking for some challenges for the upcoming year, I found a blog called A Novel Challenge that lists upcoming and ongoing reading challenges and events being hosted around the blogosphere. They've started listen some 2013 ones lately, and I've gotten myself signed up for several. :)
I stumbled across Noveldom and Beyond during NaNo 2011, and decided to give it an unofficial go this year. Found it surprisingly easy. I forgot about it for about a month and still managed to finish, lol.
ETA: Also, if anyone has created a challenge or has an idea for a challenge, feel free to share!
