I read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien when I was in year six and feel that it is still appropriate for similar aged children. I do feel that J.R.R. Tolkien shouldn't be totally overlooked here.

Liz Kessler's a brilliant writer. Her books that might appeal to younger readers are
The Tail of Emily Windsnap and sequels.

Eoin Colfer is a fantastic writer. I love Artemis Fowl and Half-Moon Investigations in particular. Some of his books are more suited to KS3 readers, I think.
