This will be our second annual round of online classic horror stories to read in October to celebrate Halloween. If there is a story you'd like to read as a group for the month of Halloween, please submit your suggestions.

Guidelines:

1. It has to be available to read free and legally on the internet.

2. When you make the suggestion, also post a link to where the story can be read or downloaded.

3. The story should be short. No more than 100 pages at the most, and hopefully not even that much since we will be doing 1-2 a week.

4. We hope to get some different stories from last year, so check the list for 2011 and suggest something new unless you can make a case for why we should do a repeat:

Pigeons from Hell by Robert E. Howard
Rats in the Walls by HP Lovecraft
The Boarded Window by Ambrose Bierce
O Whistle and I'll Come to You My Lad by MR James
The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe
The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe
Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
No. 252 Rue M. Le Prince by Ralph Adams Cram
The Suitable Surroundings by Ambrose Bierce

We'd like to have one or two stories a week during October, so if members can suggest 8-10 stories, that would be great.

5. Make one recommendation at a time, and the first ten will be selected.

Thanks for your participation!

The List So Far (if your story is not listed, check below. I either need a link or for you to make one choice or we have read it already, or it is too long):

*The Facts in the Case of M. Waldemar by Edgar Allen Poe
*The Ring of Thoth by Arthur Conan Doyle
*The Thing in the Cellar by David H. Keller
*The Room in the Tower by EF Benson
*The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
*The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe
*The Isle of the Torturers by Clark Ashton Smith
*The Jolly Corner by Henry James
*St. John's Eve by Nikolai Gogol
*The Colour Out of Space by HP Lovecraft

Monique | 38 comments I've got a few suggestions:

Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving

Maybe something by E. T. A. Hoffmann? I haven't read anything from him but he is considered a writer of horror and macabre from the Romantic Period.

William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe

The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen

The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood

And I just want to say that I really enjoyed this last year. Of all of the stories we read, No. 252 Rue M. Le Prince has stuck with me. I loved it!

Can you pick the one you most want to read, Monique? If it helps, we have read The Great God Pan and The Wendigo in the past for Tales to Chill Your Blood.

Isle of the Torturers by Clark Ashton Smith

Cool Air or The Hound by HP Lovecraft. Both of those are a bit over-the-top, as are the CAS story, and may be well suited to Halloween. We'll read whichever HPL story is more requested.

I also found Dig Me No Grave by Robert E Howard.

The story should be a short story. No more than 100 or so pages at the most.

Please provide links to the stories you are nominating, and we just need one suggestion per person for now.

Monique and Martha, I still need one suggestion from you and a link. There are still some posters who have not provided links to their stories, so I can't add them to the list until we know they are available online.

Gabriel, we have read The Yellow Wallpaper as a group already, so I'm going to defer on that one.

We can add:
Isle of the Torturers by Clark Ashton Smith

and

The Colour Out of Space by HP Lovecraft, as suggested by Karen.

That leaves two more I think?

message 25: by Grady (new)

Grady Hendrix | 9 comments I've always loved Henry James's "The Jolly Corner" as long as you decide to accept that Chapter 3 takes place postmortem.
