Elishia Ok i've picked Rapture I've been hoping I could fit this in somewhere.

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments Very hard. I'd like to read Haunted (Anna Strong Chronicles, #8) by Jeanne C. Stein
by Jeanne C. Stein if I can find it, I know I have it. Too bad I read Moon Over Soho, it's on there too.

Okay, its going to be a choice of six books, whichever seems most readable while I am still puny but not quite so bad. I found Haunted while looking to see what I had, so that one, or Darklands (Deadtown, #4) by Nancy Holzner or A Sliver of Shadow (Abby Sinclair, #2) by Allison Pang or Alchemystic (The Spellmason Chronicles, #1) by Anton Strout or Two Weeks' Notice (Revivalist, #2) by Rachel Caine or maybe Sins of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #4) by Diana Rowland .

When I looked over the first 3-4 pages, I had read almost everyone, not marked on Goodreads, but read. So I took the other way, grabbed a few books and looked at them to see if they had been listed as urban fantasy. Seems like everything has!

Thanks, he's home now. It was a car accident, but at least he survived. I'm glad I was able to take off work and go up and see him.

I'm now to 60% on my last shelf book. And as soon as I finish that I'll start in on Stormwalker for the Urban-Fantasy shelf!

Sue (knitwitsl) | 96 comments I finished my book late last night!!

Book: Archangel's Storm
Shelf: Favorite Author
Date Read: September 29, 2012
Rating: 5/5

Well, I definitely was not in a funk this week when I picked up this book. This is the fifth book in the Guild Hunter series. In this book, we learn more about Jason. He has to go to Neha's territory to help with an investigation to find who killed her consort. The consort should have been safe, being kept in a palace prison, but he's murdered and the guards have no memory of it. In this book, we also find out about Mahiya, Neha's blood relative (we do find out how she's related part way into the book). Besides the investigation, it's a story of Jason and Mahiya's relationship. I like Singh's writing and really enjoyed this book. Now on to my one for this week!!

Sandra | 25910 comments Glad you loved Archangel's Storm, Sue. I gave it 5 stars as well.

Now on to picking out this week's book!!! Sigh, there are just too many, should I go for one I've put in a challenge or one I just want to read cause I'm in the mood? Well, I decided on the latter .....

Urban Fantasy pick is Moon Over Soho (Peter Grant, #2) by Ben Aaronovitch

message 220: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments I was really enjoying my book yesterday, about half done, when I went off for a massage (neighbor is practicing for her license, lucky us). NO IDEA WHERE I PUT MY BOOK. After various chores, still couldn't find it. So now I have switched to Haunted (Anna Strong Chronicles, #8) by Jeanne C. Stein . very frustrating! But this one is good so far...

Jackie another great read!! Loved it!

Looking forward to the good bits Deidre :DD

Sandra | 25910 comments Moon Over Soho (Peter Grant, #2) by Ben Aaronovitch
Urban Fantasy Shelf
2/10/12 ★★★★

I enjoyed Moon Over Soho just not as much as Rivers of London, but definitely looking forward to #3 Whispers Under Ground

Peter Grant, Police Constable, Apprentice Wizard for the Met, and the only apprentice wizard in the last 50 years, stumbles across a case of Jazz Vampires while his boss, Chief Inspector Nightingale is recovering from a gun shot wound from the previous book.

The book is full of dry wit and a subtle sarcasm, like watching British TV, which I grew up on. Doctor Who even gets a mention :)

There were some great chase scenes and abducting an ambulance and ending up in the Thames was a classic.

Generally I'm not a great fan of lengthy descriptions of places and people, just enough to get a sense of things is all I require, yet in these novels I love all the descriptions and I feel I'm really there.

What I didn't like was Peter jumping into bed with a suspect, which even he thought was wrong, but continued to do it anyway. It felt like emotionless clinical shagging just for the sake of it and at the same time he is visiting, texting and speaking to poor disfigured Constable Lesley who is at home awaiting multiple surgeries, following the case where Nightingale was shot and she suffered a magical attack. Her family assumes he is her boyfriend but he sure doesn't act like it.

There was also another case where Peter is consulting for the Murder Team where penises are chomped off by toothy vaginas, which Peter resolves but we never find out why it was happening.

Peter discovers that a Master Wizard, that he dubs "The Faceless One" and Nightingale calls a "Black Magician" is creating hybridized cat-people and may have something to do with penis chomping and jazz vampires. Which of cause sets us up for further books with a dastardly "ethically challenged practioner" as our villan.

That series sounds interesting. I just put the first one on hold at the library. . .except now that I'm reading your message again, you said you didn't enjoy this book as much as "Rivers of London." But when I looked on Amazon, it listed Midnight Riot as the first book. Should I go back and reserve "Rivers of London" first? Thanks :-)

message 231: by Elishia (new)

Elishia It seems to be called Rivers of London over here i'm guessing in the U.S its called Midnight Riot

message 232: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25910 comments Yep, Rivers of London & Midnight Riot are the same book. UK vs US. LOL.

Book #2 is still good, don't be put off by my slight negativity. I'm very tempted to read #3 right away.

And library is the way to go if you have any doubts. LOL. All that costs is time :DD

message 233: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments Shelf: Urban Fantasy
Read: 10/2/12

book: Haunted (Anna Strong Chronicles, #8) by Jeanne C. Stein

I have read these from the beginning. I was expecting a different story, so this started slow for me, but picked up very quickly. As usual her old boyfriend Max was in it, I don't like him normally, but things are changing. Book was about her friend Culebra, a shape-changer, about whom she learned more things. Anna was way too judgmental, considering her position. Culebra has done a lot for her, and worse things to her, so why she was so pissed is beyond me.

I am deliberately being vague for those who read the series, because I don't want to give too much away. But Culebra has been asked for help from one of his old drug cartel "buddies." There is a lot of bad stuff, including child molesting, and murder.

There is good stuff too, and the ending was incredibly touching. I don't think this series will be going on for a lot of books, which is too bad. It is one that I have kept, and I guess I will be rereading.

If you haven't read Anna Strong, I wouldn't start with this, too much history, and the book would be enormous - about twice as long - if everything was summarized. You wouldn't realize what you were missing, though, as it is complete. Stein is a really good writer, I started her when my husband had a kidney transplant and I needed distraction. She was very good for that, too!

Now I need to get to work!

And of course you found Sliver as soon as you finished Haunted!! LOL.

I notice that when there is a spoiler, I sometimes look even when I shouldn't. And this is one where you shouldn't look at the spoiler, especially the ending, which I reread again, and I was very sad. But not teary this time....

So do you think I can save Shadow for another shelf? I would start over, I just hate to waste it...

message 237: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Great reviews, Sandra & Deidre. I've got to start that series, Sandra. I've been following Anna since the start as well, Deidre. It seems to be a little followed series, so it was nice spotting another fan. They are always quick reads for me, but that one was a bit out of character for the series so it took me a bit longer. I enjoyed it as well b/c we got to learn more about Culebra. I'm VERY interested to see what happens next, especially (view spoiler).

message 238: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Yep, Deidre, if you start over you can read Sliver for another shelf, if its on the list :)

LOL! It's really not worth the spoiler tag, but just in case. ;) It probably won't mean much of anything to most.

I hope you enjoy it, Jackie & Skandia. It's a fun, quick read with lots of action typically.

I know, I can't understand why people aren't reading her. It seems odd, especially when the books usually get good reviews.

message 243: by Elishia (new)

Elishia Shelf Urban Fantasy
Book: Rapture
Rating: ★★★★
Finished: 03/10/12
Review: I've been waiting ages for the conclusion of this story (Lauren Kates likes cliff hangers)and it didn't disappointing. Luce wasn't that annoying in this one, maybe because she actually had an understanding of her previous lives, she seemed more mature. I wouldn't have guessed the ending which was a nice surprise.

message 244: by Sue (new)

Sue (knitwitsl) | 96 comments Shelf: Urban Fantasy
Book: Stormwalker
Rating: 4/5
Finished: October 3, 2012
Review:
I don't remember where I received a recommendation of this book, but I'm glad I did. Janet Begay is half-Navajo from her Dad's side, with her Mother listed as "Jane Doe" on her birth certificate (she died giving birth to her). We find out about Janet's real Mother and her strong Grandmother that helped raise her. This book starts off with her already having a boyfriend (well, she dumped him five years ago and he's back now), but not knowing much about him besides his looks and a bit about his magic. We learn quite a bit more about him in the book as well.

I look forward to the next book in the series, Firewalker
