This is one of my favorites. What did you think? Did you love it like I do or did it drive you crazy with the writing style?

Michelle (morgantina) I had a really difficult time at first and was quite frustrated! I read Benjy's portion knowing that I wasn't quite getting it; I finished it then consulted a Norton edition that helped clear up some of the confusion.

After reading Quentin's and Jason's sections, I went back and read Benjy's with a fresh eye. And that made all the difference.

So, although I didn't love it, I greatly appreciate it and think it's a book that I will re-read in the future and grow to love. The stream of consciousness style didn't make me insane, but it did keep me on my toes! I'd like to read about Faulkner's experience writing in stream of consciousness. I've never written like that so I'm curious about both his creative and technical process.

Molly | 330 comments I always am so impressed by Faulkner's utter daring to begin his book with Benjy. I think people either abandon it after the first page or keep reading because they want to know the key to the seeming nonsense - they like a challenge. So maybe he did it intentionally to weed out those he felt weren't ready or willing to experience his work. I re-read it every few years - that certainly helps. Another example of the same writing style is his As I Lay Dying. Not nearly as challenging for a reader, but still the same idea. And quite funny too.
