This topic is open for discussion of The Rook by Daniel O'Malley. Be prepared for SPOILERS.

Synopsis:
"The body you are wearing used to be mine." So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her.

She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Chequy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain. She also discovers that she possesses a rare, potentially deadly supernatural ability of her own.

In her quest to uncover which member of the Chequy betrayed her and why, Myfanwy encounters a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where children are transformed into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy more vast than she ever could have imagined.

Filled with characters both fascinating and fantastical, THE ROOK is a richly inventive, suspenseful, and often wry thriller that marks an ambitious debut from a promising young writer.

Here's the breakdown:

Questions for Chapters 1 - 3

1) Did you wonder, like I did in the beginning, if Myfanwy had lost her memory or if they had managed to switch souls between people? The way she wrote the letters I couldn't quite figure out what exactly happened.

2) What did you think of Myfanwy's powers? Scary or cool?

3) If you woke up not knowing who you were among a bunch of corpses wearing surgical gloves would you have freaked? I though Myfanwy handled herself very well.

4) Can you tell a man wrote this book? I don't think I'd check out my body and evaluate it unless I saw myself in a mirror while getting dressed, showering, etc. Perhaps, however she wanted to see the scar to verify she truly was Myfanwy?

5) Would you have decided to stay Myfanwy or have attempted to runaway with a new identity? Do you think running away would truly have been possible?

6) What are your initial thoughts of the Checqey Group and their function?

7) Do you think her signing the petition will cause problems later?

8) Did you like how she managed to find her office?

9) Gestalt sounds very interesting and creepy at the same time.

10) Do you feel Myfanwy (the original) sounded a little naive?

11) Were you surprised that the woman from Myfanwy's dream wasn't going to tell anyone she lost her memory? I wonder what Myfanwy did for her?

12) Any thoughts as to why someone would want to kill a paper pushing higher up?

13) So do you like the story so far?

Questions and Comments for Chapters 4 - 10

14) Suspect number one please enter the room...Gestalt. What did yo think of the first two of four Gestalt bodies? Cool Twin and Tidy Twin. I like it. It made me laugh.

15) *Snicker* A gynecologist appointment??? "And...it's still...there." I wondered could a man have taken over Myfanwy's body? lol

16) What did you think of the play-by-play experience? The seemingly zoning out as one body needed more attention? I would think this would make the other bodies very vulnerable. I guess if Gestalt really disliked being thought of as a freak he/she could kill off his/her other bodies. Do you think if one dies they all do? Oh the possibilities.

17) So powers in a person definitely seem to be gained throughout a person's life like the incident Myfanwy describes with the Argentina government official. It sounds like some Dr. Who type situations may end up popping in with this one too.

18) Sounds like the old Myfanwy was a very lonely person if her social life is examined. Do you think that dream about her kissing someone was that--just a dream or do you think there was someone in her life? Perhaps right before she lost her memory?

19) The new Myfanwy seems like she is very different than her old self. Did her powers evolve when she lost her memories? She seems more connected to them than what we know of the old Myfanwy. Could it just be the new Myfanwy just is more open to them?

20) What were your thoughts of the interrogation? What did you think of Myfanwy's thoughts on something not being right within Peter Van Syoc?

21) Do you think it's wise of Myfanwy to not be as meek and mild as the original?

22) What do you think of Ingrid, Myfanwy's secretary?

23) Did you like the way Myfanwy backlashed Perry?

24) Are there too many "Dear You" moments? I keep finding myself wanting to skip them to find out what happens next.

25) So do you think part of the reason Myfanwy isn't in a relationship has to do with people's fear to have skin to skin contact with her?

26) What do you make of the latest Gestalt body? Why does he need to know everything before she does?

27) Gestalt definitely has a temper. Do you think his display moves him to the top of the lists of suspects?

28) Did you like or dislike the change of view point to each of individual summoned for the meeting? I thought it distracting.

29) What the heck was going on with Eckhart shooting the King? Which King--the Checqey group's or England's?

30) Should the new Myfanwy redecorate?

31) Thoughts on the Grafters?

32) Could the Googling be a result of her signing the petition?

33) We now know the dream lady is one of the boss' of the Checqey Group. Does this make it even more surprising she didn't have concerns with Myfanwy losing her memory and going back to work?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Questions and comments for chapters 11 - 15

34) Lady Farrier just seems as sweet as can be (not really), "but if you'd been killed, what would simply have served to tidy up an inconvenience." Gah! I'm outraged for Myfanwy.

35) What the heck are the Alrich sentences included for in chapter 11???? Is it for a timeline reference??? Was it truly necessary?

36) Initial thoughts of Lady Ferrier?

37) The question of King and Queen is answered. What did you think of the court?

38) Sounds like Myfanwy is really throwing Gestalt off his game with her new found assertiveness.

39) So we now know the rest of the court and the suspect who may have wanted Myfanwy dead. Any of them standing out to you?

40) The Van Syoc video was pretty gruesome.

41) I like that we now know more of how Myfanwy came to learn she would loose her memory. So now we know 100% she is Myfanwy with no memory. How would you have taken the news if someone told you you would lose your memory?

42) The question of what happened to Van Syoc has been answered. These Grafters sound scary and rather subtle in their new creations/enhancements.

43) I think Gestalt is having issues with the new Myfanwy. Do you think he'll create new problems for her? Is he intimidated by her, jealous, or does not handle change well?

44) We now find out there are Checquys all around the world. This could get interesting. The American Coatoan sounds interesting.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Questions and Comments for chapters 16 - 19

45) First impressions of Shantay?

46) Is Bronwyn truly her sister or a spy?

47) Do you think it was smart for Myfanwy to let Bronwyn stay the night? I thought that strange.

48) So now we know someone siphoned off funds to buy land and create Camp Caius. I wonder who did it and why?

49) So Myfanwy is called into the field. Do you think this is a set up to get rid of her?

50) Do you think Myfanwy can rise to the occasion and end the crisis without any help from Gestalt?

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments Questions for Chapters 1 - 3

1) Did you wonder, like I did in the beginning, if Myfanwy had lost her memory or if they had managed to switch souls between people? The way she wrote the letters I couldn't quite figure out what exactly happened.
Yes, I did. I still wonder exactly what happened...like if the Myfanwy we have is the same Myfanwy from the letters, just with a misplaced memory, or if it's someone completely different. I have a feeling our questions will be answered, though.

2) What did you think of Myfanwy's powers? Scary or cool?
If I had those powers, I'd be terrified of them. I don't know...I'm leaning on the scary side right now, but perhaps we'll see her use her powers differently later on.

3) If you woke up not knowing who you were among a bunch of corpses wearing surgical gloves would you have freaked? I though Myfanwy handled herself very well.
I definitely would have freaked. I think she probably did before opening old-Myfanwy's letter. She had to have had some sort of reaction to all those bodies. She did handle herself pretty well, though, afterward. She had a lot of composure, under the circumstances.

4) Can you tell a man wrote this book? I don't think I'd check out my body and evaluate it unless I saw myself in a mirror while getting dressed, showering, etc. Perhaps, however she wanted to see the scar to verify she truly was Myfanwy?
Hah, yes. I mean, I think it's somewhat realistic. She didn't know who she was, so she wanted to get a good look at herself.

5) Would you have decided to stay Myfanwy or have attempted to runaway with a new identity? Do you think running away would truly have been possible?
Hmm... I don't know. After what happened in the bank, I probably would have done what Myfanwy did. I would have wanted answers. I don't know if running would have been possible or not.

6) What are your initial thoughts of the Checqey Group and their function?
There was a lot of info-dumping in the first 50 pages on the Checquy Group...while I know what they do, I'd like to see it in action. It's definitely an interesting setup, with the Rooks and Pawns and all. Wait, does that mean there are Bishops and Knights? If so, I missed that.

7) Do you think her signing the petition will cause problems later?
I didn't think of that. Perhaps, yes.

8) Did you like how she managed to find her office?
Heh, yes - she's resourceful. I don't know how she'll keep this up, though.

9) Gestalt sounds very interesting and creepy at the same time.
It/they/whatever sounds fascinating. And really creative, too.

10) Do you feel Myfanwy (the original) sounded a little naive?
Naive about the Checquy Group? Like, she knows they're super dangerous and they coerce people into staying, and yet she's happy to work for them? It seems odd, but perhaps the Checquy Group does help people, and she likes being a part of that. (I'm not sure if that's what you were asking or not.)

11) Were you surprised that the woman from Myfanwy's dream wasn't going to tell anyone she lost her memory? I wonder what Myfanwy did for her?
I'm really curious about this woman. Can we assume that it is Lady Farrier? Yes, I do wonder why she wouldn't tell anyone about Myfanwy's memory. Hmm.

12) Any thoughts as to why someone would want to kill a paper pushing higher up?
Absolutely no clue.

13) So do you like the story so far?
Yes, I do! I'm ready for the info-dumping to slow down a bit and the action to pick up, though.

Kim | 259 comments Questions for Chapters 1 - 3

1) Did you wonder, like I did in the beginning, if Myfanwy had lost her memory or if they had managed to switch souls between people? The way she wrote the letters I couldn't quite figure out what exactly happened.

I was a little confused at the beginning too. I was not expecting it to be the same person!

2) What did you think of Myfanwy's powers? Scary or cool?

I think they are a little bit scary! It doesn't sound like she is completely in control of them. It would be too easy to accidently hurt someone.

3) If you woke up not knowing who you were among a bunch of corpses wearing surgical gloves would you have freaked? I though Myfanwy handled herself very well.

I would have freaked big time!

4) Can you tell a man wrote this book? I don't think I'd check out my body and evaluate it unless I saw myself in a mirror while getting dressed, showering, etc. Perhaps, however she wanted to see the scar to verify she truly was Myfanwy?

Yeah, although I might have done the same thing. I would be wondering what I looked like!!

5) Would you have decided to stay Myfanwy or have attempted to runaway with a new identity? Do you think running away would truly have been possible?

It's hard to know what I would have done. I am not a risk taker at all, but I don't know if that's because I have 5 kids. I married when I was 19 and started having kids at 22, so who knows. My guess is I would have attempted to run away with the new identity, but I don't think she would have stayed hidden forever. It's probably best she dealt with things head on.

6) What are your initial thoughts of the Checqey Group and their function?

I am looking forward to learning more about them and how things work.

7) Do you think her signing the petition will cause problems later?

Yep! I was surprised she signed it, because how it would look if it came out to the other admin people that she signed it. I guess she was still trying to figure things out and maybe didn't give it enough thought.

8) Did you like how she managed to find her office?

Yeah, I thought was pretty smart!

9) Gestalt sounds very interesting and creepy at the same time.

He just sounds creepy to me, LOL!

10) Do you feel Myfanwy (the original) sounded a little naive?

I think it's hard to know if she being naive until we get more of the story.

11) Were you surprised that the woman from Myfanwy's dream wasn't going to tell anyone she lost her memory? I wonder what Myfanwy did for her?

I wondered that too.

12) Any thoughts as to why someone would want to kill a paper pushing higher up?

My guess is she found out something about someone and hasn't connected the dots, but someone knows that she could eventually.

13) So do you like the story so far?

I am liking it so far. I was starting to get nervous that I wouldn't like it before I started the book, but I love the way the author is giving us the story. It's really interesting to explore the idea of how our experiences shape who we are. They totally seem like two seperate people and Myfanwy thinks of them as separate.

message 23: by Parvathy (last edited Oct 13, 2012 08:16AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Parvathy | 242 comments 1) Did you wonder, like I did in the beginning, if Myfanwy had lost her memory or if they had managed to switch souls between people? The way she wrote the letters I couldn't quite figure out what exactly happened.

Me too. At first I kept thinking the original owner of the body was just an ordinary girl whose body is going to be used by a secret agent or something to carry out some mission. I even thought switching bodies was like the protagonists superpower

2) What did you think of Myfanwy's powers? Scary or cool?

Kind of scary. She is like Rogue from X Men with little bit more control.

3) If you woke up not knowing who you were among a bunch of corpses wearing surgical gloves would you have freaked? I though Myfanwy handled herself very well.

To tell the truth her reaction was strange. It was like a part of her knew that this was normal for her. Because she had the enough sense to check her pockets right there in the middle of the park. At first the whole surgical gloves didn't make any sense but now it does.

4) Can you tell a man wrote this book? I don't think I'd check out my body and evaluate it unless I saw myself in a mirror while getting dressed, showering, etc. Perhaps, however she wanted to see the scar to verify she truly was Myfanwy?

No. Some times I even forgot that the author was a man. I wouldn't have done the checking out unless I saw my self in a mirror. I think the verification of the scar was more to our benefit to let us know that the character is really organized from the very beginning. The scare may be the same one she got when she fell of the tree, the day she discovered her powers

5) Would you have decided to stay Myfanwy or have attempted to runaway with a new identity? Do you think running away would truly have been possible?

I would have stayed. Either way you are faced with uncertainness. With staying atleast you get some answers as to why everybody wants to punch you in the face. A known enemy is always better than an unknown foe.
6) What are your initial thoughts of the Checqey Group and their function?

Pretty impressive. X men + spy kids + Men in Black kind of deal.

7) Do you think her signing the petition will cause problems later?

Definitely, One thing I have learned from reading till now is that the author never writes anything without connecting it to something in the future.

8) Did you like how she managed to find her office?
I am kind of surprised that the old Myfanwy didn't provide her with a map. She seemed to have made a detailed note of everything else being organised and all. May be the meeting with the colonel guy will have some significance in the future.

9) Gestalt sounds very interesting and creepy at the same time.

First time I am encountering such a character. Makes my head hurt thinking how it controls every one at the same time. Absolutely creepy

10) Do you feel Myfanwy (the original) sounded a little naive?

No, on the contrary I find her very capable. Arranging all that without the group having even the slightest clue. I am partial to people who is capable of cooking up effective plan B's.

11) Were you surprised that the woman from Myfanwy's dream wasn't going to tell anyone she lost her memory? I wonder what Myfanwy did for her?

It seems the old Myfanwy kind of ruled out the dream walker from her list of suspects. Otherwise she would have found a way to keep her out. Not sure how that character would play out

12) Any thoughts as to why someone would want to kill a paper pushing higher up?

Stumbling in to an age old conspiracy would be my guess.

13) So do you like the story so far?

A bit slow till now and really confusing at some parts. But did pick up the pace in the last chapter. So kind of hoping for more action in the following chapters

2) - Yes, definitely scary! I'd probably wear gloves all the time. I'm curious to see her other touch-induced powers, though, to see what else she can do.

3) Me too!

6) Yes, me too - especially the other members of the Court.

7) Ah, you're right. It would look pretty bad...

10) Very true. I think as we read more of Myfanwy's letters and meet more of the characters in the Checquy Group, we'll uncover more of what she was really like.

13) Love your answer. It is very interesting how Myfanwy (new) thinks of herself and old-Myfanwy as two completely separate people, rather than just assuming she lost her memory. Very interesting.

2) Yes, she is!

3) Yeah, the latex gloves made no sense at first. It was pretty creepy!

4) Good point.

5) That's why I would stay, too. I think, if I ran, I would always be looking over my shoulder for the latex-glove-assassins. Better to figure out what's going on and see if I can stop it.

8) I am wondering that, too - about the colonel.

9) Yes, definitely strange! How is it even possible? Urghh, creepy, I agree.

13) Agree - hoping for some action soon.

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments Questions for Chapters 1 - 3

1) Did you wonder, like I did in the beginning, if Myfanwy had lost her memory or if they had managed to switch souls between people? The way she wrote the letters I couldn't quite figure out what exactly happened.

I am not sure if it's the same person with no memory or a different person in the same body. Sometimes I think they are the same because they seem to have the same shreds of memory. But other times I think they're different.

2) What did you think of Myfanwy's powers? Scary or cool?

I think it's cool. And it sounds like before the memory loss she had control over her powers, so there was less reason to be afraid of it.

3) If you woke up not knowing who you were among a bunch of corpses wearing surgical gloves would you have freaked? I though Myfanwy handled herself very well.

That part was weird. She finds herself standing in the rain surrounded by dead bodies with no recollection of how that all happened...but her first reaction is "oh I have this letter in my pocket I better read it." Um, no. Psychotic break would be more reasonable a reaction.

4) Can you tell a man wrote this book? I don't think I'd check out my body and evaluate it unless I saw myself in a mirror while getting dressed, showering, etc. Perhaps, however she wanted to see the scar to verify she truly was Myfanwy?

I can understand verifying the scar, but the assessment of books and cellulite seemed a bit much. In my experience, women don't stand naked in front of mirrors and assess their...assets. Such a male thing to do lol. I just rolled my eyes and thought, yep definitely written by a guy.

5) Would you have decided to stay Myfanwy or have attempted to runaway with a new identity? Do you think running away would truly have been possible?

I would have run away, especially after what happened in the bank. But that would have been a very short story, so I was not surprised about what happened.

6) What are your initial thoughts of the Checqey Group and their function?

I keep thinking...oh yeah, kind of like X-Men. That is bugging me a little, but it's interesting so far.

7) Do you think her signing the petition will cause problems later?

Probably. Especially since it seems that everyone knows MyFanny (snort) as being shy and quiet but efficient. That seems very out of character for her to have done.

8) Did you like how she managed to find her office?

I thought it was very clever and creative. I liked how the author handled that.

9) Gestalt sounds very interesting and creepy at the same time.

I thought so too. I can't wait to meet him...or them.

10) Do you feel Myfanwy (the original) sounded a little naive?

Maybe not naive, just a bit too trusting of the people she worked with. It sounds like that as soon as she knew the threat was real she started planning immediately.

11) Were you surprised that the woman from Myfanwy's dream wasn't going to tell anyone she lost her memory? I wonder what Myfanwy did for her?

That was strange, I am hoping that gets explained more later.

12) Any thoughts as to why someone would want to kill a paper pushing higher up?

I suspect it's probably someone who thinks she knows something that they don't want her to know. She might not even find the information that important, but they do.

13) So do you like the story so far?

So far I'm intrigued and interested. But the name and the x-men similarities are kind of bugging me a little.

1) I think it could go either way, but right now I think they're somehow the same person.

2) True. I think I'd still be fairly frightened of myself if the latex body ordeal in the bank happened to me, though.

3) Well, the story starts with the letter, but perhaps Myfanwy did freak out a little, and we just didn't see it. *shrug* Or perhaps some part of her brain recognized these assassins and she knew, subconsciously, not to panic. I would have had a psychotic break, though...

7) Yes, she's acting out of character so far. I wonder how long she can keep that up. Or maybe she'll change Myfanwy (argh, I keep seeing My Fawny and nearly type it every time, but at least it isn't MyFanny, heh) into a bolder, more take-charge kind of person.

10) Good point!

11) I have a feeling it will be very important to the story.

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments @ Mary, LOL, I know! Every time I see her name "my fanny" runs through my brain! I can't stop it!

Amanda I am LOVING this book so far. Already got messed up on the reading- didn't read yesterday and am now so engrossed that I'm already embarking on tomorrow's reading.

I'm going to skip answering the questions from chapters 1-3, but it's been interesting reading your responses!

Lisarenee | 7659 comments @Mary,

#2 you said, "If I had those powers, I'd be terrified of them. I don't know...I'm leaning on the scary side right now, but perhaps we'll see her use her powers differently later on."

I think they're a little scary because what would happen if you were seriously injured, but on the other hand, it seems controlable. Sounds like her power either evolved or she never realized the full potential of it.

#3 you said, "She had a lot of composure, under the circumstances."

I thought so too.

#6 you said, "There was a lot of info-dumping in the first 50 pages on the Checquy Group...while I know what they do, I'd like to see it in action. It's definitely an interesting setup, with the Rooks and Pawns and all. Wait, does that mean there are Bishops and Knights? If so, I missed that."

Yes it was, but I liked the way it was done. As to Knights and Bishops I guess we'll find out. I think we and the new Myfanwy have a lot more to learn about everything.

#10 you said, "Naive about the Checquy Group? Like, she knows they're super dangerous and they coerce people into staying, and yet she's happy to work for them? It seems odd, but perhaps the Checquy Group does help people, and she likes being a part of that. (I'm not sure if that's what you were asking or not.)"

I thought she seemed a little brainwashed by them. They take children from their families, but I'm unsure if they do it to keep the children and their families safe or just to exploit them? Think about it. She dreamed about the lady before she knew she was real, and I'm sure she was at ease with her. She would have revealed everything and it would have been used against her.

#12 you said, "I'm ready for the info-dumping to slow down a bit and the action to pick up, though."

Me too. :)

#2 you said, "I think they are a little bit scary! It doesn't sound like she is completely in control of them. It would be too easy to accidently hurt someone."

I'm surprised the old Myfanwy didn't warm her about her power in that first letter.

#5 you said, "It's hard to know what I would have done. I am not a risk taker at all, but I don't know if that's because I have 5 kids. I married when I was 19 and started having kids at 22, so who knows. My guess is I would have attempted to run away with the new identity, but I don't think she would have stayed hidden forever. It's probably best she dealt with things head on."

It's hard to say how any of us would act in this position because you wouldn't remember anyone or any life experiences. Make me wonder if we'd act totally out of character or if some of our original personality would remain. Plus, I don't think 100% certain she's the same person, but that's what I'm leaning toward.

#7 you said, "Yep! I was surprised she signed it, because how it would look if it came out to the other admin people that she signed it. I guess she was still trying to figure things out and maybe didn't give it enough thought."

Exactly what I wondered.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments @ Parvathy,

# 2 you said, "Kind of scary. She is like Rogue from X Men with little bit more control."

Those X Men pop up a lot in books.

#3 you said, "To tell the truth her reaction was strange. It was like a part of her knew that this was normal for her. Because she had the enough sense to check her pockets right there in the middle of the park. At first the whole surgical gloves didn't make any sense but now it does."

I thought so too. I think my first reaction would have been to run away and then slowed down and checked pockets and think things through. I don't think I'd stick around all those seemingly dead people. I'd bolt.

#8 you said, "I am kind of surprised that the old Myfanwy didn't provide her with a map. She seemed to have made a detailed note of everything else being organised and all. May be the meeting with the colonel guy will have some significance in the future."

I was too. With so much detailed information I would have expected it, but maybe it was something she just didn't think of?

#3 you said, "That part was weird. She finds herself standing in the rain surrounded by dead bodies with no recollection of how that all happened...but her first reaction is "oh I have this letter in my pocket I better read it." Um, no. Psychotic break would be more reasonable a reaction.

lol I agree.

#4 you said, "I just rolled my eyes and thought, yep definitely written by a guy."

I usually don't pay attention to the author's name, but when I read this I had to look and my suspicions were confirmed.

#9 you said, "I thought so too. I can't wait to meet him...or them."

You and me both. I want to see how they function. Heck I trip a lot with just my body to control. I think it'd be interesting to see how Gestalt handles itself. I also wonder how the brains function. Are we talking more of one soul with 4 functioning connected minds in one entity or what?

Parvathy | 242 comments 14) Suspect number one please enter the room...Gestalt. What did yo think of the first two of four Gestalt bodies? Cool Twin and Tidy Twin. I like it. It made me laugh.

They are weird. Even I am having a hard time remembering that he is a single person or thing or whatever. Is there any chance for a romance between any of the Gestalt and Myfanwy. Because that would be creative, strange and also very difficult to write.

15) *Snicker* A gynecologist appointment??? "And...it's still...there." I wondered could a man have taken over Myfanwy's body? lol

That would make sense considering that the author is a man. Now I am not making any sense.LOL

I think thier power would be diminished considerably if one of them dies. Considering the loss of one brain and all. But the others would survive. At least that is what I think. The play by play experience felt like tuning in to a different frequency.

17) So powers in a person definitely seem to be gained throughout a person's life like the incident Myfanwy describes with the Argentina government official. It sounds like some Dr. Who type situations may end up popping in with this one too.

I am at loss here cause I haven't seen or read Dr Who.

18) Sounds like the old Myfanwy was a very lonely person if her social life is examined. Do you think that dream about her kissing someone was that--just a dream or do you think there was someone in her life? Perhaps right before she lost her memory?

I was thinking about that. Thinking when we will be introduced to this mystery man. So far Gesphalt is the only one we are introduced to who has a remote possibility of fitting into the mold. Then there are other members of the court. Do you think this mystery man has anything to do with the memory loss.

19) The new Myfanwy seems like she is very different than her old self. Did her powers evolve when she lost her memories? She seems more connected to them than what we know of the old Myfanwy. Could it just be the new Myfanwy just is more open to them?

I think all her inhibitions faded with her memory. It is just like she said in one of her letters. That episode from her childhood shows us that she was afraid of getting close to people and didn't trust anyone. When she lost her memory she must have lost that feeling.

20) What were your thoughts of the interrogation? What did you think of Myfanwy's thoughts on something not being right within Peter Van Syoc?

I am still confused about that. The whole interrogation episode was confusing. I am still not sure if it was Myfanwy who caused the death of that person. She did interfere

21) Do you think it's wise of Myfanwy to not be as meek and mild as the original?

May be that is the whole point. She was meek and mild before but that didn't stop people from trying to kill her. Who knows may be this is for the best? to be honest I don't know why everyone is calling her meek and mild. The whole episode with the Argentina woman is an evidence to the contrary

22) What do you think of Ingrid, Myfanwy's secretary?

In one word Secretive.

23) Did you like the way Myfanwy backlashed Perry?

He was really obnoxious and self absorbed so I liked the way she backlashed him.

24) Are there too many "Dear You" moments? I keep finding myself wanting to skip them to find out what happens next.

You too, I thought I was the only one who wanted to skip the information hammering part. Why can't she just explain the whole thing in a para instead of taking chapters and what is the use of the whole history any way. It is not like we are going to have a test at the end of the book.

25) So do you think part of the reason Myfanwy isn't in a relationship has to do with people's fear to have skin to skin contact with her?

Yep, That and trust issues every one she knew abandoning her and all.

26) What do you make of the latest Gestalt body? Why does he need to know everything before she does?

May be that's how things were before and he got used to it.

27) Gestalt definitely has a temper. Do you think his display moves him to the top of the lists of suspects?

No, he seems to out of the loop and impulsive to be a valid suspect.

28) Did you like or dislike the change of view point to each of individual summoned for the meeting? I thought it distracting.

Distracting, boring and confusing. It would have looked good in a movie version of the book.

29) What the heck was going on with Eckhart shooting the King? Which King--the Checqey group's or England's?

Does Checqey group even has a King? He said to shoot the King in the left head next time. So the King has more than one head making him a supernatural entity. I thing this will play a prominent rule in the future.

30) Should the new Myfanwy redecorate?

Since the new one seems to be able to stand up for herself and has a better fashion sense. Sure she will redecorate and while she is at it change her entire wardrobe too. I wonder do your fashion sense improve after getting amnesia.

31) Thoughts on the Grafters?

Creepy Resident Evil Nemesis wanna bees. I watch a lot of movies.LOL

32) Could the Googling be a result of her signing the petition?

I thought so too. In fact that was the only explanation I could think of.

33) We now know the dream lady is one of the boss' of the Checqey Group. Does this make it even more surprising she didn't have concerns with Myfanwy losing her memory and going back to work?

The boss wanting to keep am employee who has lost her memory is surprising. Especially when it is a matter of national security. May be she wants to examine the extent of memory loss and hence the dinner.

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 4 - 10

14) Suspect number one please enter the room...Gestalt. What did yo think of the first two of four Gestalt bodies? Cool Twin and Tidy Twin. I like it. It made me laugh.
It made me laugh, too. And it made me even more intrigued with Gestalt. The whole idea of four separate personalities within one mind...aah! My brain can't handle it. I want to know more.

15) *Snicker* A gynecologist appointment??? "And...it's still...there." I wondered could a man have taken over Myfanwy's body? lol
Heh, that made me laugh as well.

I wonder if they have to do that...the zone out thing...or if they chose to in order to let Myfanwy know what was going on. I'm not really sure exactly what happened. You're right - there are so many possibilities where Gestalt is concerned.

17) So powers in a person definitely seem to be gained throughout a person's life like the incident Myfanwy describes with the Argentina government official. It sounds like some Dr. Who type situations may end up popping in with this one too.
I really liked that chapter about the Argentinian official, by the way. It was a good info-dump, heh. I'm looking forward to some bizarre Dr. Who-like situations and seeing how Myfanwy handles them.

18) Sounds like the old Myfanwy was a very lonely person if her social life is examined. Do you think that dream about her kissing someone was that--just a dream or do you think there was someone in her life? Perhaps right before she lost her memory?
I think there was possibly someone in her life, whether right before she lost her memory or years earlier.

19) The new Myfanwy seems like she is very different than her old self. Did her powers evolve when she lost her memories? She seems more connected to them than what we know of the old Myfanwy. Could it just be the new Myfanwy just is more open to them?
I don't know. The old Myfanwy did seem to hate her powers because of what they cost her. So maybe it is because of how open new Myfanwy is to them that she has more control of her powers. *shrug*

20) What were your thoughts of the interrogation? What did you think of Myfanwy's thoughts on something not being right within Peter Van Syoc?
I probably would have had to use the paper bag. :-( Myfanwy's new power is interesting. I wonder if old Myfanwy had it all along and never learned to use it, or if it belongs to new Myfanwy alone. I have no idea what to think of Peter Van Syoc.

21) Do you think it's wise of Myfanwy to not be as meek and mild as the original?
I think someone is bound to notice. I don't know if she'll get away with it or not, but I do think she's managing pretty well, under the circumstances. She's pretty lucky, too.

22) What do you think of Ingrid, Myfanwy's secretary?
I like her. I don't find her secretive, like Parvathy, but maybe I missed something.

23) Did you like the way Myfanwy backlashed Perry?
Yes! He was annoying and it was nice to have him shut up for once.

24) Are there too many "Dear You" moments? I keep finding myself wanting to skip them to find out what happens next.
I find them pretty interesting, but I am wanting some action soon.

25) So do you think part of the reason Myfanwy isn't in a relationship has to do with people's fear to have skin to skin contact with her?
Yes, and I agree with Parvathy - she's definitely got some issues with trust.

26) What do you make of the latest Gestalt body? Why does he need to know everything before she does?
Old Myfanwy was probably pretty meek and shy and I bet he (and the rest of Gestalt) was able to walk all over her.

27) Gestalt definitely has a temper. Do you think his display moves him to the top of the lists of suspects?
Personally, the fact that Myfanwy already suspects him and is already wary of him/they/whatever drops him down on my list of suspects. I'm leaning towards someone she doesn't suspect.

28) Did you like or dislike the change of view point to each of individual summoned for the meeting? I thought it distracting.
I didn't like it either for the same reason.

29) What the heck was going on with Eckhart shooting the King? Which King--the Checqey group's or England's?
Didn't this "king" have multiple heads or something? Definitely something supernatural.

30) Should the new Myfanwy redecorate?
YES. Round bed with mirrors on the ceiling? Gross.

31) Thoughts on the Grafters?
They seem pretty evil. And they've had lots of time on their hands to come up with new creations to fight the Checquy Group.

32) Could the Googling be a result of her signing the petition?
That makes sense. Who else would it be? Hmm.

33) We now know the dream lady is one of the boss' of the Checqey Group. Does this make it even more surprising she didn't have concerns with Myfanwy losing her memory and going back to work?
Definitely surprising. Almost suspicious. Hmm. I'd really like to know what old Myfanwy did for her.

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 4 - 10

14) Suspect number one please enter the room...Gestalt. What did yo think of the first two of four Gestalt bodies? Cool Twin and Tidy Twin. I like it. It made me laugh.

I found them to be pretty funny and charming. It was a little creepy for one to start a conversation and the other to continue it...but mostly it was fascinating than scary. The girl body sounds pretty kick ass, I hope we meet her.

15) *Snicker* A gynecologist appointment??? "And...it's still...there." I wondered could a man have taken over Myfanwy's body? lol

I had a serious *facepalm* moment over that. It was similar to my reaction to the mirror assessment, it just didn't flow right.

I wondered if perhaps that might be the one weakness Gestalt has. That when one body is occupied and needs full attention the others are vulnerable. Perhaps by killing one the whole consciousness dies. If he's the bad guy, that could be valuable information.

17) So powers in a person definitely seem to be gained throughout a person's life like the incident Myfanwy describes with the Argentina government official. It sounds like some Dr. Who type situations may end up popping in with this one too.

That is really intriguing. I wonder if these might be people that they had their eye on for awhile because they had the power, but never manifested them or perhaps they had manifested them but this was when it became out of control.

18) Sounds like the old Myfanwy was a very lonely person if her social life is examined. Do you think that dream about her kissing someone was that--just a dream or do you think there was someone in her life? Perhaps right before she lost her memory?

Hmmm, I hadn't considered that. If there was a love interest, perhaps that would be our most viable suspect.

19) The new Myfanwy seems like she is very different than her old self. Did her powers evolve when she lost her memories? She seems more connected to them than what we know of the old Myfanwy. Could it just be the new Myfanwy just is more open to them?

It sounds like the old girl was scared of her abilities, so refused to use them even though she had the capability. The new one isn't scared of it and willing to explore the possibilities. I have to wonder when it's going to get her in trouble that she's acting so vastly out of character.

20) What were your thoughts of the interrogation? What did you think of Myfanwy's thoughts on something not being right within Peter Van Syoc?

My first thought on that was, maybe he was altered in some way...like spies carrying a cyanide pill if they are caught. Maybe he was altered somehow to be able to self destruct if interrogated.

21) Do you think it's wise of Myfanwy to not be as meek and mild as the original?

Definitely not. People are noticing and that could be dangerous. If it doesn't come back to bite her in the butt, then that will be a serious flaw in the plot of this book.

22) What do you think of Ingrid, Myfanwy's secretary?

She seems nice, but withdrawn. I don't think she's used to being seen as something more than just a servant who is called when needed and ignored the rest of the time.

23) Did you like the way Myfanwy backlashed Perry?

I was very proud of her for calling him out, though it was probably unwise to do it.

24) Are there too many "Dear You" moments? I keep finding myself wanting to skip them to find out what happens next.

I have started referring to this as "detail vomit". Just details, details, and more details...it's putting my brain to sleep and seriously overwhelming me. More plot, less detail vomit!

25) So do you think part of the reason Myfanwy isn't in a relationship has to do with people's fear to have skin to skin contact with her?

It very well could be that, or even if she met someone who got over that fear I think she would be too scared of hurting them to allow the relationship to continue.

26) What do you make of the latest Gestalt body? Why does he need to know everything before she does?

Very different from the other two, that's for sure. I am more suspicious of this body and the others so far.

27) Gestalt definitely has a temper. Do you think his display moves him to the top of the lists of suspects?

I am not sure it was necessarily the temper as the behavior toward her and his lack of respect for her equal status. It's confusing the hell out of me to remember that technically this is the same person as the twins

28) Did you like or dislike the change of view point to each of individual summoned for the meeting? I thought it distracting.

I found it to be pretty distracting too. If you are going to jump POVs that's fine, but introduce that element way before 100 pages in.

29) What the heck was going on with Eckhart shooting the King? Which King--the Checqey group's or England's?

That was weird, I have no idea what was going on there. And if we don't find out it'll annoy me

30) Should the new Myfanwy redecorate?

I am surprised the old one didn't already. The place sounds like a cheap hotel.

31) Thoughts on the Grafters?

I'm intrigued by them. I hope we get to meet more of them.

32) Could the Googling be a result of her signing the petition?

I hadn't thought of that, but that seems the most likely. Everyone in the company knows all her personal details, or could find out more than googling could. It has to be the protestors, they got her name from the petition and now they want to know more about her.

33) We now know the dream lady is one of the boss' of the Checqey Group. Does this make it even more surprising she didn't have concerns with Myfanwy losing her memory and going back to work?

I am curious about that. I wonder if it will be a topic of conversation at their dinner.

14) Yes, I can't wait to meet Eliza (is that right?). Although really, I just want more interactions with Gestalt in general. They're (I don't know what pronoun to use) definitely the most interesting character in this book, in my opinion.

16) Very true.

18) I wonder, if there is a love interest, why old Myfanwy (I should call her Thomas, like in the book) wouldn't have written about it right away so new Myfanwy would be aware. Seems like it would be important information.

21) I can't believe Ingrid hasn't noticed anything. On second examination, I can see why Parvathy thinks Ingrid is suspicious... I can sort of see why everyone else around Myfanwy hasn't noticed, but Ingrid, especially, should have noticed.

24) I was aggravated with all the info-dumps at first, but I don't mind them as much now, and I'm finding them interesting. I think the letters are a big part of the book, though, and they aren't going anywhere. :-/

14) A romance between Gestalt and Myfanwy would definitely be strange... I think it would be too creepy for my liking, heh.

17) It's a British television show about a time-traveler (and his companion) who travel through time and space via TARDIS (a time machine disguised as a blue police box) and save people from aliens and other nasties using nothing but his wits and a sonic screwdriver. :-)

21) Yes, good point! Perhaps she was just shy outside of work, but very bold when it came to her job.

22) I didn't agree with you at first, but looking back, I'm wondering why Ingrid hasn't noticed anything odd about Myfanwy's behavior at all. It seems like she would have, having worked with her so closely all this time.

30) I have a feeling she's going to get sick of all the black suits and go shopping for something more her style.

#14 you said, "Is there any chance for a romance between any of the Gestalt and Myfanwy. Because that would be creative, strange and also very difficult to write."

I wonder about that as well.

#15 I understood what you were saying perfectly. lol

#16 you said, "I think thier power would be diminished considerably if one of them dies. Considering the loss of one brain and all. But the others would survive. At least that is what I think. The play by play experience felt like tuning in to a different frequency."

Interesting thought about the power diminishing. I hadn't thought about that. I like how you likened the play-by-play to being like tuning into a different frequency.

#17 you said, "I am at loss here cause I haven't seen or read Dr Who."

It's a show with crazy situations which involve aliens and other creatures. The original show had bad acting and made me laugh, but the newest one is pretty interesting and well done. My one son is now a huge fan and my daughter likes the show too.

#18 you said. "Do you think this mystery man has anything to do with the memory loss."

It makes you wonder...

#19 I think you're right and I like that thought in this book.

#20 you said, " I am still not sure if it was Myfanwy who caused the death of that person. She did interfere "

I don't think so, but maybe?

#29 you said, "Does Checqey group even has a King? He said to shoot the King in the left head next time. So the King has more than one head making him a supernatural entity. I thing this will play a prominent rule in the future."

Well they've got Rooks, pawns, bishops.... I just am unsure who this could be.

#20 You said, "I probably would have had to use the paper bag. :-( Myfanwy's new power is interesting. I wonder if old Myfanwy had it all along and never learned to use it, or if it belongs to new Myfanwy alone. "

There truly are so many questions about Myfanwy.

#33 you said, "I'd really like to know what old Myfanwy did for her."

Me too.

You know, that is a really fascinating thought. They are naming people after chess pieces. Which means there has to be a king and queen...who would they be?

#14 You said, "The girl body sounds pretty kick ass, I hope we meet her."

That would be fun to meet all the Gestalt individuals.

#15 You said, "I wondered if perhaps that might be the one weakness Gestalt has. That when one body is occupied and needs full attention the others are vulnerable. Perhaps by killing one the whole consciousness dies. If he's the bad guy, that could be valuable information."

Very true.

#20 You said, "My first thought on that was, maybe he was altered in some way...like spies carrying a cyanide pill if they are caught. Maybe he was altered somehow to be able to self destruct if interrogated.
This character creates so many questions. I can't help my mind from wondering."

I wondered that as well. Not about the cyanide pill, but something more internal. I mean the guy doing the interrogation and everyone else in those rooms were startled and didn't even realize the man had died.

#21 you said, "Definitely not. People are noticing and that could be dangerous. If it doesn't come back to bite her in the butt, then that will be a serious flaw in the plot of this book."

If a person was attacked, as she was obviously was (she's got black eyes and all), would people perhaps strike up her difference in mannerism to that?

#24 You said, "I have started referring to this as "detail vomit". Just details, details, and more details...it's putting my brain to sleep and seriously overwhelming me. More plot, less detail vomit!"

I actually like most of the information, I just dislike the fact they're put in at moments you really want to know what happens next. Plus, it does at times seem like a little too much.

#28 you said, "I found it to be pretty distracting too. If you are going to jump POVs that's fine, but introduce that element way before 100 pages in."

I think we all agree that this was very strange and seemed out of place.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions and comments for chapters 11 - 15

I somehow skipped right over this. I can do the questions tomorrow, if that works for you.

She's ruthless! Definitely someone to watch out for.

35) What the heck are the Alrich sentences included for in chapter 11???? Is it for a timeline reference??? Was it truly necessary?
I thought at first that they were in Myfanwy's head, but when she didn't react to them, I was confused. I think they will be definitely be important later.

36) Initial thoughts of Lady Ferrier?
She's very cold. I think as long as Myfanwy continues to do a good job being Myfanwy, Lady Farrier will be happy. I think she's suspicious, too.

37) The question of King and Queen is answered. What did you think of the court?
The way Thomas explained it made sense - the Chess metaphor is old-fashioned, but it serves its purpose. I found all the blurbs on the Court members fascinating - they're all interesting characters. I'm anxious to see what Thomas has to say about Alrich.

38) Sounds like Myfanwy is really throwing Gestalt off his game with her new found assertiveness.
Good for her. I like her attitude - I just hope it doesn't get her into trouble when people start to suspect.

39) So we now know the rest of the court and the suspect who may have wanted Myfanwy dead. Any of them standing out to you?
They're all interesting! Alrich is definitely fascinating - can't wait to learn more about him.

40) The Van Syoc video was pretty gruesome.
Urgh, yes. I don't think I could have made it through all of that.

41) I like that we now know more of how Myfanwy came to learn she would loose her memory. So now we know 100% she is Myfanwy with no memory. How would you have taken the news if someone told you you would lose your memory?
Well, I wouldn't believe them, obviously. But if multiple people with future-predicting abilities told me, then I'd start to really freak out. I'd tell my family and friends, start writing stuff down, and keep records, similar to Myfanwy, except I don't have someone that wants to kill me.

42) The question of what happened to Van Syoc has been answered. These Grafters sound scary and rather subtle in their new creations/enhancements.
Very scary. Especially if there are much worse creations out there than Van Syoc.

43) I think Gestalt is having issues with the new Myfanwy. Do you think he'll create new problems for her? Is he intimidated by her, jealous, or does not handle change well?
Sounds like he just prefers to have things done a certain way. I'm guessing it's the latter (not handling change well). I think he's going to have to learn to deal with the new take-charge Myfanwy in order for them to work together well.

44) We now find out there are Checquys all around the world. This could get interesting. The American Coatoan sounds interesting.
They do, indeed. I found the chapter on them pretty interesting (Martha Washington, haha).

Kim | 259 comments Argh!! I got behind. I am going to try super hard to get caught up today and then I will sign up for a day to do questions.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I totally mixed the dates, and was convinced that today was the 12th... don't ask... and I didn't start the book yet... there is no way I'm able to play catch up...
