Mary Mortimer (MEMortimer) Th question may be odd to most of you but what is an Indie Book

message 2: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Pearson A book that is either published by a very small independent publisher, or (more recently) a book that has been directly published by the author themselves, without the use of a traditional publisher. :~)

Richard Sutton (RichardSutton) I think the term came into being when self-published authors wanted to find an identifier that didn't mean the book was junk. In the same way the film industry now has an almost mainstream subset in Indie Films, small presses who might not have enough output to get mainstream media notice, found some by applying the "outsider" label which is quite attractive to some readers who are not really interested in block-busters. Indie Publishers really are implying gently, that subject and quality of the writing is more important than selling hundreds of thousands of copies, but everyone likes sales, so I wonder... in a few years, the label might not really mean anything at all.

Chris Stevenson (chrisstevenson) | 4 comments They wanted to distance themselves from the the "vanity" word. Just like an indie film producer, all the production, cost and promotion is shouldered by the author.
