On hipinion's recommendation, I'm reading "Winter's Tale" and about halfway through - and it's amazing.
Do any of Helprin's other books compare? I've seen Freddy & Frederica and Refiner's Fire around at used book stores.

"A Soldier of the Great War" is beautiful, though perhaps somewhat less magical, than "Winter's Tale." I really enjoyed "Freddy & Frederica," and while it's clearly Helprin's imagination at work, the depth is very different.
