Natural History. Before her success with the cyberpunk/fantasy Quantum Gravity series, Justina Robson originally found success with several excellent thoughtful hard-SF novels. This is a fascinating take on Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life.

I love Spin State by Chris Moriarty. It's really strong classic sci-fi, mixes up military, tech, morality issues, you name it.
huge second for 'spin state' - that one has come strongly recommended to me for a good while now. my nom is for another supposedly marvelous but long neglected by me book, Warchild.Andrea, i adore Melissa Scott, but that one's out of print and may be hard for people to find :(

Whoops thanks, fixed that. Sorry though, the group has already done The Left Hand of Darkness in 2009. We've done 5 Le Guin novels so far.
I would like to nominate Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon. It has been recommended to me by several people.
Speaking of Elizabeth Moon, I've been wanting to read The Speed of Dark for a while. I'll put in a nomination for that.
Well we're running pretty close to the wire here, and I apologise for letting it get this close so I'll make an executive decision and start the poll now. I'll take those books that only had initial nomination for this month only so we can get this poll running. Normally we'll only allow one nomination per author but due to the circumstances I'll allow it this mont.

For my nomination I'm going to go with something a bit different for the group and go back to the beginning with Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
