Cassiel I read this book in the 70s: novel about the Dauphin of France imprisoned in a tower for several years after the revolution; a young woman was his only contact. His health deteriorates and he eventually dies, and I think the young woman was pregnant.
Cannot find any book that comes close.

bup | 87 comments This sounds a lot like "The Man in the Iron Mask," sort of. Except not after the revolution.

bup | 87 comments Except that it sounds even more like (same author, Dumas), "The Knight of Maison-Rouge: A Novel of Marie Antoinette" http://www.powells.com/review/2003_11...

message 4: by Cassiel (new)

Cassiel thanks; it's definitely not either of those two. I think it was probably written in the 60s or 70s, and and despite the unusual for that era subject of "illegitimacy" it was likely a young adult novel.

Corbett | 23 comments That sounds like a book I read too. It has the word Dauphin in the title I think. It was a historical novel.

Alexandra | 40 comments Dang, I remember reading a book with the Dauphin of France as a character but can't remember what it was!

It probably isn't what your thinking of though, I believe the book I read was an alternate history fantasy type, with the young Dauphin as a character.

Cathy These all made me think of "Desiree" by Anne Marie Selenko (?? maybe that's not her name ...)
But not the Dauphin but what the hey

The alternate history book was probably The Shadow of Albion and Leopard In Exile: Carolus Rex, Book II both of which deal--at least in part--with an alternate Earth where the young Dauphin did not die with Marie and his father, but was spirited into hiding by an Englishman. These 2 stories (there was supposed to have been a third, but unfortunately Andre Norton died before it could be written, dealt with the young Prince/King after he'd grown up.

As for the 1 that the poster is looking for--no idea what it could be.

chucklesthescot | 31 comments Jean Plaidy wrote a few books based on the Dauphin of France. I haven't personally read any of them though. She also published under Victoria Holt.

Lauren (laurenlb23) | 66 comments "Revolution" has something about that...the girl shoots off fireworks for the dauphin while he is in the tower

Cassiel, are you still looking for this book?

Cassiel is no longer a member of this group and was last heard from in 2007, so I'm going to guess this is abandoned.

``Laurie (laurielynette) | 1036 comments Well that's a shame because I just remembered reading a book called "A Prince Lost to Time" by Ann Dukthas which might have been it.
