Versioni i letërsisë realiste të Eça de Queirós e bën realizmin e Floberit të duket mizantropik, të Balzakut pedant dhe Drajzerit a Heminguejit thjesht gazetaresk. Filozofia e tij për Qytetin dhe Malet në 1890 shëmbëllen bash dualitetin e këtyre koncepteve gjeo-socialë edhe sot. Përveçëse intelektualisht shumë e arrirë, proza e tij është ëmbëlsisht lirike dhe pozitivisht këndellëse.
