Read 2 times. Last read October 1, 2018 to October 3, 2018.
I can see why I rated this 5 stars back in 2009, but I am a firm 3.5 these days. Parts of this book just dragged quite a bit — feeling the hunger of the kids way too much.
There's a few comments that just read a little....uncomfortable, like the feelings about an autistic brain, but then there is good depth and feeling in how absolutely frustrating it would be in the Fayz.
The lynch mob near the end....man this series.
Okay a few more thoughts. I get the frustrated "too much world on your shoulders" and as a 20-year-old, maybe I related to Sam a bit more? But it falls a bit short here. Why isn't he asking for more help?
And the treatment of female characters in this book is not stable overall. Astrid is too meek and boring and seems to want to do more? So.....why can't she be more than the girlfriend of the Depressed Sam or sister of Little Pete? Also, I can't get a read on Diana and what her purpose is, other than to be "Caine's big love." And just ahhhh. I still am going to continue, but I'm frustrated.
