I was so so so side eyeing this when I heard there was a sequel to Bird Box. Of course more of the story could be told, but horror sequels don't tend to be good? Plus after the movie that I heard wasn't great (I should still watch it for myself!) I just wasn't sure what could be done in this world.
I was wrong. I think I have moved on from loving dystopian books that are just post incident to dystopian books that show how society/people have progressed since the incident. This takes place a decade or so after the first book - the kids "Boy" and "Girl" are now 16. They've lived their life sheltered and by so many rules, because that's the only way to live life, right? But maybe it isn't. And maybe the world doesn't have to stop just because it has had something so awful happen.
This book is much more linear than the first book, and the teens have more of a voice. It still has some atmospherically dark moments, and I really enjoyed it! You still don't learn what the creatures are, which makes sense if we are all being honest. Nothing is going to live up to our imaginations.
