it was amazing

This was a difficult book for me to read because I knew the ten-year-old Coul who was a sweet entertaining, challenging kid. He and his brother were easy to love because their underlying natures were fun and uplifting. In the days before the internet, email, texting, it was easy to lose touch with people you wanted to keep in your life.

Over the years, I knew Coul had delved down dark paths that were far out of my realm of understanding. I never knew how far he had fallen.

When we reconnected two years ago, it was again easy to love Coul. This Coul. The Coul back to who he was as a pre-teen. Reading the story of his journey took me days because though our years apart were many, we both reached this point of being Christians. What a way to come back together.

Coul’s story will engage you with hope. Hope at every turn as this young man accepted the paths God was putting in front of him—and choosing to do something about taking new steps to build a new life.

Some of the gems:

“Over the course of these three chapters, keep in mind that I was still a teenager, still in high school myself. As awful as that is, I am happy to say that what was intended for evil is now something that I get the privilege of honoring God with and I see that as the reason I am still here: to reach out to those who are as I was.”

“As life happens in this broken world we all get wounded and scarred from our own tragedies and traumas.”

“It wouldn’t matter that I would be partying alone because I could party more. The faulty logic doesn’t stop there, I’m just getting started.”

“’Okay, great. There’s still time.’ That should be the subtitle of my life.”

On seeking God, “It becomes a filter that exists between me and my actions. The problem is that filters get clogged up from time to time and lose their effectiveness. And that is one of my biggest struggles today: keeping my faith filter on, keeping it clean of worldly debris, and keeping it in the right place. It isn’t easy, but it is worth it. So, the struggle continues.”
