I didn't expect a ton from this book, as most of McGee's books are just fine for me. They're a type of YA that I can get through quickly, will be entertained, but will likely not read again. And they always have gorgeous covers. Sort of like PLL where I'm going to roll my eyes, but damn I'm not going to stop reading. And I'll likely read with McGee puts out next, assuming it isn't another book in this series.
I think in part this book gave me flashbacks to Three Dark Crowns and how much it talked about political intrigue and yet....all it was about was whose hormones were raging for whom. Or the Select...for the same reason (except that was obviously going to have more romance.)
And that's all this book was too. There really is no plot, and not much to tie it to the first book, outside of thin threads. This book isn't about a girl realizing she is now queen of a country at a very young age - the first queen, that is, a potential milestone, but instead, it is all about dating musical chairs. All character development from book 1 is gone, all real focus on the fact that they're RUNNING A DAMN COUNTRY is side lined, because all that matters is who these four young women are dating or wanting to date.
And the BRIEF discussion of racism is so awkward and shoe-horned in. I am really disappointed in this sequel. I have no idea what was to be accomplished here, because there is absolutely no plot. There is no karmatic justice for anyone, there is nothing satisfying about the ending.
Anyways, if you want to further read my rage tweets:
