Okay, so I have mixed feelings on this book. The story was interesting; however, for a book that is supposed to be a spin on King Arthur's story, this book didn't feel like a story told in that time or era. It actually felt like a fantasy about another world with character names we are familiar with (such as Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, etc). Whenever they mentioned a European reference, I was actually thrown OUT of the story because I didn't feel like this story was taking place in our medieval history. That being said, I thought the story was an interesting tale on its own. I liked the characters and the villains as well, but the story was written simply like a story being spoken to you about these characters which gave it a different feel than most fantasies.

Also, there was A LOT of bloodshed in this book so I am curious to see how the series portrays all the violence.

The drawings didn't do anything for me. The black and white sketches were confusing and didn't match the storytelling. For example: In one scene it told about Nimue battling wolves and the picture depicted her in pants when she was wearing a skirt in that scene (because later it mentions how she needed to get rid of her bloodied skirt to fit in). I wasn't impressed by the drawings and would have been happier just using my imagination.

When I saw it had such a low rating on Goodreads I was surprised, but after reading it I can see why people rated it so low. As a book marketed as "cinematic twist on the tale of King Arthur", this book does not meet that description. So any fans of King Arthur lore will be very disappointed. However, as a fantastical medieval story on its own (without the Arthur reference), I think it would have been better received since the story itself isn't awful.

Anyway, I am glad I read it and now I am looking forward to seeing the Netflix series to compare the two. Maybe I'll get more of the medieval Arthurian feel while watching the series than I did reading the book.
