As I shared in an Instagram post: "The Forgotten Island" by David Sodergren promises old movie references, gore, violence, sex, humor, wit and originality... That's one, two, three... seven checkmarks!

"She smiled and lifted her book, the international signal for ‘Leave me alone.'"

This book was pure fun! Although this doesn't mean the novel is perfect.
I'll start with the negatives, because there aren't that many:

Even when most of the times I'm a "journey, not destination" type of guy, I have to say the last 50-70 pages of this book kind of disappointed me. I won't spoil anything, but I wasn't a big fan of the ending even when the author was dropping hints and preparing us for it.

I can assume it was the author's intent but man, there's a bunch of despicable characters here. The only character I really liked was Ana Logan, so imperfectly flawed yet so real. All those little details made her almost jump out of the pages.

I read some reviews on Social Media; people pointed out that there's a lot of sex in this book. I don't really care about the amount of sex in a novel but yeah... this book... the author mirrors sex with almost everything. "Hey look, a boat"; sex. A beach, sex. An island, sex. I'm happy, sex. I'm sad, sex. I'm in pain, sex. I'm going to die, sex. I don't really like you, let's have sex... No? I said let's have sex and we will have sex...
It's unnecessary 97% of the time.

The good? Well the setting and the creepy factor: "The Forgotten Island" is 100% scary, gruesome and unsettling. Also great writing by Mr. Sodergren, well-executed humor and... Grub the Pug.

"Hope. Ha! Hope was just an acceptable lie people told themselves to get through the day."

"The Forgotten Island" is a great option for a vacation trip read, for a summer horror buddy-read or to enjoy during Halloween season. I'll definitely read "Night Shoot" someday soon, it's already in my Kindle :)
