“The Last Resort” which I received through Goodreads Giveaways is a gipping and compelling novel that opens with a murder at the Harmony Resort during a deadly tropical storm that traps the guests of celebrity therapists “Drs. Miles and Grace Markell,” who are renowned for healing broken marriages.

Tension and high emotions spark as the lies and secrets that have been tearing the marriages of Joanna Haines and husband Ben as well as Shell Williams and her husband Colin apart they hope will be resolved in the two-week program, only to discover that the Markells are hiding darkly chilling secrets of their own. As the storm draws closer loyalties are tested, new alliances formed as all three marriages face the pain of turmoil and uncertainty as murder leaves none of them unscathed.

With twists and turns as the reasons and the trauma behind the breakdown of these marriages are revealed, the plot gains momentum especially when Shell Williams reads a news bulletin about a violent tropical headed their way that's been kept secret from the guests. Intensity and suspense build as the marital trauma in the two marriages is revealed; with Joanna’s discovery of bruising on Grace’s neck; her therapist’s temporary refuge in a swimming hole in the forest; and the uncovering of a sexual predator. Well-written and captivating as relationships and trust are explored and the details behind the murder revealed, the story quickly and smoothly progresses to a conflict near the end that has the couples discovering a resolution to their unhappiness.

Bringing the story to life are complex, realistic and powerful characters like thirty-five -year -old Grace (Tyler) Markell who’s haunted by her past and broken by a bad marriage. A shrewd and empathetic therapist, Grace is also guarded and desperate, hoping to find a reprieve from her unhappiness in an old swimming hole. Her fifty-two-year-old husband Miles Markell is the wealthy, perfectionist who hides his true nature behind that of a charismatic, confident psychoanalyst. Shell Williams broken by her loss is a blunt, strong-willed alcoholic, her workaholic husband Colin guilt-ridden, lost and confused while Joanna Haines is the unpredictable, directionless social worker who’s haunted by trauma and her sexual orientation. Joanna’s husband Ben is a lawyer who’s a fixer, grounded, rigid and insensitive, wanting back the happy marriage he thought he had at any cost while Ruth is the session’s harrowed organiser who’s been wounded by love. Temperamental, moody and obsessive, she will do anything to have her love returned by Dr. Markell.

With a mysterious disappearance of a celebrity doctor as a catalyst, “The Last Resort” quickly captures your imagination in an innovative story of deceit, lies and betrayal. I enjoyed it and won’t hesitate to recommend it to others.
