it was amazing

Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank were born just months apart in 1929, and the marking of their ninetieth birthdays is a perfect time for publication of Martin & Anne: The Kindred Spirits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank, a picture book dual biography by award-winning children’s author Nancy Churnin.

Besides the closeness of their birth dates, Martin and Anne shared many other similarities, including victimization by prejudice, writing abilities that first provided solace to themselves but eventually enlightened millions of others, and early deaths at the hands of persecutors. Churnin explains these parallels in captivating language that reveals the comparable temperaments of Martin and Anne as young children, teenagers, and for Martin, young adulthood.

The production aspects of Martin & Anne are especially attractive. The distinctive binding makes the book seem slightly more formal than most picture books, although Yevgenia Nayberg’s illustrations will intrigue young readers. In Nayberg’s paintings, Martin and Anne are recognizable as themselves, but they also seem archetypal, representing not just the living, breathing Martin and Anne but also all that they have come to symbolize.

While Martin & Anne is necessarily somber in places, it is far from gloomy. Nancy Churnin deftly keeps the focus on positive aspects of the subjects’ lives, including perseverance, courage, and dedication to education. The book ends on a particularly uplifting note that extends the similarities between Martin and Anne to all children.

The time for Martin & Anne is right now, and their parallel story can be a valuable, satisfying addition to school, library, and home bookshelves.
