I am about to go and talk about this book for probably 2 hours with my co-host Stephanie, but I had to write a quick review of this book.
If you love YA fantasy, get this book. If you want to read more diverse authors, get this book. If you are like me and getting a bit sick of YA tropes getting recycled, GET THIS BOOK.
Seriously, I picked up this book because so many people on my twitter feed were retweeting the author's reaction to her books (arcs maybe?) coming in. I normally am a bit meh about new authors with this much hype, but she's just so damn adorable. I followed her instantly and picked up the book about a month after it came out. And then went "why did I get it in hardback??" Because the cover is so stupidly beautiful. That's why. I closed the book a few times just to stare at it.
The past year I've whined a bit about YA books and how much their tropes are starting to get to me. This book takes so many tropes that I normally am shying away from, flips them around a bit, shakes it up real nice, and produces such a good book.
Anyways, go listen to JBC — Stephanie and I are definitely going to talk about this one for awhile.
