Watership Down meets The Dark Crystal.
Podkin One-Ear is the first book in the Five Realms series and like all first books it has the job of setting up a world, introducing a cast of characters and telling a satisfying story. And this first book pulls off all three.
The world of the Five Realms is rich in myth and legends and reminds me of old fantasy movies like Willow, Dark Crystal and The Black Cauldron. In this world there is a balance between good and evil and when it is threatened Podkin and the friends and family he finds on his journey must battle to protect it. Podkin isn't a typical hero. He's lazy and spoilt. He's not particularly brave either. But Larwood uses that to develop Pod throughout the story while teaching his readers a little something. This book is middle grade and there were times when I felt too old for it. But there is danger aplenty here. Larwood doesn't shy away from difficult subjects. There is death, war, horror. But there's good too, and enough triumph to give this novel a balance of its own.
While the pace is a little uneven at times, the rousing climax, interesting characters and mythology, and the promise of further (and bigger) adventures to come make this a great first entry in the series.
