I love Marcus Sedgwick's books ... I honestly do. But sometimes I do tend to nitpick about them. Saint Death is no different. He has a habit of writing hard-hitting, fast-paced YA novels. Sometimes thriller, sometimes gothic, sometimes fantasy. Usually they have an element of all three.

Saint Death on the other hand is a hardcore thriller set in the Mexican badlands. And even though I was engrossed in parts, I found the book a little rushed. It seemed to consist of various elements that never really were fully explored. The last third totally hooked me. The mystery of his relationship with his father gripped me, and I read that third in no time at all.

I guess I struggled to place myself within the setting. Mexico and its drug feuds and gangs doesn't really capture an original and unique audience. The antagonists were also a little caricatured for Sedgwick. I'm used to more fleshed out, interesting characters like Valerian from The Book of Dead Days.

I struggled with the layout of the text at times too. The false English/Mexican grammar confused me and I didn't really see the point. The lack of speech marks seemed to bother me for some reason. And slotted into the story was the worldwide issues of poverty, immigration, slave abuse by unregulated employers, even homosexual relationships. I wish these were explored more rather than glanced at. They are subtle themes.

On the whole I enjoyed parts and got frustrated by parts.
