really liked it

For a book based on a movie, it was INCREDIBLY good. Even just as a book (though it's hard to separate the fact of the movie), I thought this was very good; I thought Eggers did a good job of capturing how a 10 year old speaks. I think it is an interesting idea to move a picture book along like this.
I thought that it would have been better if the monsters were somehow clearer in their origins. Sometimes it seemed like they were based in Max's reality (Katherine's impatience with Carol in the movie seemed a mirror of Claire's impatience with Max, and their arguments seemed to have a lot of the vocabulary they'd picked up from their parents' arguments - I thought this was an interesting presentation, but this is not as clear in the book); sometimes it seemed like they were not and I couldn't understand the switching.
People who don't like Eggers are unlikely to change their minds on the basis of this.
