Dull plotting.

Duller psychology.

Shallow characters.

Improbable coincidences galore.

Pretty racist.

And yet almost entirely saved by some great descriptive work in painting the submerged world.

Worth reading, barely.

Emma Summed it up exactly for me!

Larissa Also summed up 100% for me. I had to give it 3 stars for the visual imagery, but the rest left me quite disappointed and I had so been looking forward to reading this too.

Poliana Agreed!

Stan Barker I thought it was just me - obviously not!

message 5: by Tom (new) - rated it 3 stars

Tom Sowerby Exactly my thoughts. I cared so little for the characters that the vague plot didn't interest me. Nicely summed up.

Carl Luke My precise sentiments, my good man.

message 7: by Sam (new) - rated it 2 stars

Sam Spot on!

message 8: by Antonio (new)

Antonio Ippolito but where do you find all this racism?

Sandi I should just copy and paste your review. It sums up my opinion perfectly.

Antonio, the racism is in the depiction of the people of color as tribal savages.

Jenny Yes the racism was very noticeable. Makes you realise how far we have come since 1962

Calico A pretty good summary - this is how I felt about it too.
