Three and a half stars, really. This is the first book by Erin Hart that I've read, although I had no problem with the backstory of her first two books in this novel. I enjoyed the link to Irish folklore- the strongest part of the book. Unfortunately, I think this would have been better if it wasn't written as a mystery. There were a lot of improbable clues for a case three years old, and I had a hard time believing the Svengali-like nature of the guilty party- perhaps because I didn't read the first book. The motivations seemed thin, and Elizabeth didn't seem like a realistic child character to me. The last literally cliff-hanging scene didn't play out with suspense, but almost seemed cliched, which is too bad, because I think this is a strong author.
Writing is lovely and lyrical. Maybe Erin Hart is ready to leave a mystery framework and spread her wings more fully.
